How to offer to pay for Disney

coulditbeme2323 · 13/05/2026 09:22

Long story short we went to Disney couple of years ago - kids wanted to go back so will be going for two weeks in October half term.

Sister's kids are desperate to go, but as a family it's out of their budget. We have a great relationship with sister and BIL, but don't want to offend them (well him I know sister would be delighted)

How do we go about offering, I was thinking probably speak with her first?

You sound lovely and i’m so glad it worked out! Hope you all have the best time

Oh how lovely! Have a brilliant time! If you want to take a 66 year-old pensioner with you... 👋🏻👱🏻‍♀️😄

Trillie · 16/05/2026 22:12

Can you say you’ve had some good luck, lottery win or whatever, and say you want to share it to rack up some good karma. If that fits with your relationship it’s a way of paying without being condescending or them feeling it’s charity.

We are doing a split, I have watched YouTube visits on it - and from previous visits I agree it makes a lot of sense.

Days 1-6 The Grand Flordian and days 7-13 The Boardwalk inn. The Boardwalk inn is walking distance to Epcot and Hollywood Studios - so will do those parks the second week.

You can get a boat from the Boardwalk which is a really lovely way to get to those parks!

I am probably worrying about nothing, I just know men can be well men.

Yes. Pride. Men can sometimes be stubborn if their role as provider feels undermined.

I'd hope your sister and you can discuss what/where/when could be the approach. Timing and tone are important to preserve his dignity.

YourPurpleGal · 16/05/2026 18:22

How thoughtful and kind of you to think of this. I'd suggest you have a very private chat with her. Just you two. Away from your home and her home. Take her out to a park, or for a coffee in a quiet café. Explain that you would like to give this to her, no strings attached, and that you'd be honoured and over the moon if she wants to accept. Ask how she feels. If she seems hesitant, draw her feelings out and discuss. Hopefully you'll be able to reach a positive and warm resolution. Make sure she knows you love and respect her.

I personally would never be able to accept such a gift, you paying for them all to go would feel way too awkward to me.

Edited

Me too, and yet I'd love to take my child to Disney. But money has a weird way of causing discomfort even if its meant without strings.

OP though, its a lovely thought and you should at least discuss with DSis.

Tuesdayschild50 · 15/05/2026 18:56

This is lovely im sure they would both be over the moon to do it together as one big family see it as a gift.
Could they do the spends maybe im sure the kids would be delighted x

Poor guy getting a free trip to Florida. Get a grip fgs

Well, one he's not paying for. Not sure it's completely free in a broader sense.

Disney/Florida not everyone's cup off tea.

But you are right, there are much worse things to worry about - that's why I said 'a bit'

pambeesleyhalpert · 15/05/2026 12:20

So glad they agreed op have a great time

So pleased it’s all worked out for you OP. We’re here now staying at the Boardwalk and having a great time. Out of curiosity, which resorts are you staying at? I’m thinking of a split stay next time.

We had no issues with immigration. In fact it was the quickest we’ve been through, We use the MPC app which lets you use a smaller line.

Grand Flordian and Boardwalk

@coulditbeme2323 Aww that’s lovely of you. So glad you’re going, Disney is an amazing experience in a big group.
Can I ask which hotel you’re going to, as it’s nice? I’m looking for recommendations

Just a warning that you said she could probably pay meals- Disney is horrifically extortionate- if you’re paying for them you’d have to speak to her seriously and make sure they can pay for anything there, because imagine you being her and the first day even her whole budget could be burnt through and then secretly you’re irritated they have no money to help out. We had a small sharing type meal in one or two places for six of us and couldn’t get it below €150

I think they’re going to Florida. The food is even more in the U.S.

All booked - and didn't a split hotel based on a lot of YouTube recommendations - so very excited!

TeaPot496 · 13/05/2026 17:38

Yikes. Not a lot of sisters would permit their sister to spend ££££s on them for a hol without feeling guilty the whole break! The portions are nothing like they used to be..

🙄 @TeaPot496 This is a judgy dig at both the OP for wanting to do it and her sister for accepting. Why?? . How do you know what "a lot of sisters" would permit? It's a lovely family treat funded by a family member who can afford to do so. Their business. OP was only looking for advice in case her brother in law felt he couldn't accept. There's no shame in accepting gifts.. and money isn't everything. OP's sister is probably mutually supportive in other ways.

Dogmum74 · 14/05/2026 22:16

do you want to come to Disney. We will pay.

it isn’t hard FFS

I'd frame it as your DC would really love their cousins to be there, is there any way you can help it to happen?

I guess you talk to your sister and she knows how best to communicate to dh.

I would do this too. Say your DC love spending time with them and it would be amazing for them to do this together. It’s a lovely thing to do.

Commonmum · 14/05/2026 21:38

Can you just take the kids?
my parents could not afford anything but I got taken on holidays by friends as I was friends with their daughter. My parents would give me some cash which I would use for some small treats, but actually mainly bring back as I knew how much they needed it. I was 10-15 yo and I never ever felt it was a charity act, the kids really loved to stay with us. Actually I am just realising it now thinking about it how generous they were. I was just excited to board on a plane (first time!) and to go somewhere nice and warm with a pool. I had the best summers. My mum would have over their kid a lot after schools, doing homework, food etc so it really felt like an equal relationship. Only now as an adult I realise how poor my parents were (got electricity disconnected more then once) and how my friend was well off, mum came from a wealthy family with loads of properties, the dad was a very famous surgeon.

Stealth boast?

Why not just say “We are planning to go to Disney next year, would x and y like to come with us? My two would love to have them there for company, It would be our treat.”

You have got into your head you are a kind samaritan dishing out charity and they’d be offended, you are not.

You sound very bitter and it’s making you rude. Very unnecessary. You just come across as jealous, but does venting like this make you feel better? Would you say this to her face? Genuinely curious. I think she’s doing a lovely thing for her family and I really hope they all get to go.

You know, not everyone on Mumsnet makes a stealth post.
What a shitty accusation to make.
There are actually kind, decent people in the world and it appears @coulditbeme2323 is one of them.
You, however, appear to have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
It costs nothing to be kind - spend freely. ❤️
