Also from Pierce Brisbane who has had great loss in his life.

If you worry, you die. If you don’t worry, you die. So don’t worry.

Sometimes hard to live up to though!

Sorry, Brosnan not Brisbane.

The two wolves fighting for your spirit. The one you feed is the one who will win.

Act like you have five minutes it will take all day, act like you have all day and it will take five minutes. Initially I heard this in the context of horsemanship but have found it to be equally as useful with children, dogs and the general public.

I just remembered another one, something a colleague told me once. I was pregnant on my first and hadn't ever been around kids so I felt clueless. I said I didn't know if I'd be a good mum. She told me that if you are a good person, you already are a good mum.

If you think you can or think you can't, you're probably right.

If you don't like what you are getting stop doing what you are doing.

I like this because it gives the power back to you. You might not be able to change the bigger problem but you can change something you do to make it better. Maybe saying no to others or being stricter with kids about clean up or stop working long unpaid hours, anything really.

If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got.

Tomorrow is a new day. I live by this mantra because it always gives me hope.

I said this once to a mum in soft play. She came in, looking stressed and exhausted, sent her two kids off to play, and sat down to breastfeed the baby. She looked like she could fall asleep at any second. Her child came over to talk to her and she snapped at her and told her to go off and play. Then after the child went, she started crying. I went over to ask if she was OK and she said she was going through a rough time with the baby barely sleeping and now she had snapped at her child for no reason and felt awful. I said "tomorrow is a new day" and she smiled and said "that's very true".
A few years later, that baby ended up going to the same primary school as my youngest, but two years below, and I saw her in the playground and she came over and said she remembered me and thanked me for coming over that day. We are now friends and meet up for coffee after the school run sometimes.

Sorry. Off topic but sometimes little things make a difference. I remember several times when other mums came over to help me randomly too. It does make a difference.

Yes I’m not sure “you can be whatever you want to be” is particularly helpful advice to a young person.

CoffeeCantata · 15/05/2026 18:32

JHound · 15/05/2026 15:01

Yep - I find that a bit glib. Same with “if you really wanted it you would be doing to”. There are ao many barriers to that.

See also 'You can do anything if you want it enough!'

My daughter came home from school trotting this out (teacher had been telling them all they just had to 'dream and they could make it happen'). I did take care not to crush her, but I watered it down somewhat.

I told her that, although as a child, my dream was to be a ballerina, there was just no way that was ever going to happen, taking into account my ineptitude and my inappropriate physique.😂

"Keep your own side of the street clean"

It's served me well personally and professionally. You can't control what others do, so just do what you know to be right.

Don't assume something is absolutely true unless you have seen it or experienced it for yourself.
