At work people don't like a person who just says "no", it is most helpful to tell people "you can't do it this way, but here is your solution". It has drastically advanced my career.

Decades ago, just after I’d graduated, I saw the book Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway in a bookstore window. I didn’t ever read the book but that phrase stuck with me and helped me through so many career milestones.

“Let them”.

This is the worst advice, you are basically allowing someone to carry on their crappy behaviour, supporting emotional detachment, avoiding necessary confrontation, and encouraging passive acceptance of harmful behaviors.

It leads to missed opps to confront concflicts and therefore does not resolve any issues. It facilitates the passive aggressive behaviour of an individual and allows them to carry on.

Just do the job in front of you.

I’m known as a grafter in my workplace who won’t turn away from any job. My Dad always told me to do the job in front of you and to do it well. No job is beneath us in other words. I agree and am glad he brought me to that way.

  • be a leaf on a tree (i.e. connect with people and be part of something)
I check I'm doing this often and it really makes a difference.
