I’ve just read Angela’s Raynor’s statement about why Labour did so badly and what they need to do to change….aibu to think SHE STILL DOESNT GET IT!! Nothing mentioned about welfare, nothing mentioned about immigration-these are 2 subjects most talked about as the reasons why people didn’t vote for Labour.
she might not like it-but id they want to stay in power, they MUST tackle these subjects and not just ignore them because they dint fit her narrative.

It got lost a bit earlier, but for those who want immigration to come down.

Angela Raynor still doesnt get it.

I'm not a Starmer fan , he's a bit Tory lite for me. But ...sjnce he has nothing to lose he should prioritise one thing namely Housing. Go for it seriously. He is deeply unpopular and even if he found a cure for cancer they media would still loathe him. So he may as well leave some legacy. Same goes for whoever succeeds him , assuming anyone wants the poisoned chalice.

Fwiw I think the Tories themselves will have a modest revival. As it becomes clearer that Reform is a policy void. Does Farage want to reopen the coal mines and invest in British industry or does he want to flog everything to foreign companies like Palantir - including the NHS? He is on record with both ideas. He can't have a 'sweetheart press' forever. Even useless hacks like Kuennsberg, Preston and Nick Robinson may have to ask him hard questions eventually.

Who’s Preston?

So Labour voters are also racist? Interesting take.

Some Labour voters probably are racist, yes.

And yes, Shabana Mahmood (Labour Home Secretary) has discussed some migration policies which fit the definition of racism and are not dissimilar to Nazi Germany’s policies. I am not minimising the evil of Nazi Germany. I am showing, though, how easy it is for political parties to have similar rhetoric and policies.

Funnily enough Keir Starmer has also used generalised opposition rhetoric in public but neither Starmer nor Farage are actually Hitler and intending to rouse the country to exterminate all Jews.

So stop with your desperate accusations and comparisons that minimise the evil of Hitler. Elected representatives of the Green Party have a far more hostile attitude towards the Jews so why don’t you scrutinise them if you’re so bothered?

"The assessment will show that Britain is broke and broken - revealing the mess that populist politics has made of the economy and public services," a statement issued by Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office said.

(I cba to look for any more as the internet has gone mad with Starmer’s desperate attempt to save his own skin)

Let’s focus on the point: Farage’s proven antisemitism and Reform’s proven track record of using language about taking our country back and using dehumanising language about migrants. This does not minimise the evil of Hitler. It makes Hitler’s evil and Farage’s intentions extremely clear.

You believe that. I don't.

Why do you think Reform did so well then? (even though immigration is nothing to do with local councils)

CornishDaughteroftheDawn · 11/05/2026 11:44

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 11/05/2026 10:25

The fact that a proportion of voters shunned Labour because of their own racist views on immigration doesn’t mean that Labour should go down that road. I’ve always voted Labour but I certainly wouldn’t if they started adopting Reform policies.

So Labour voters are also racist? Interesting take.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/05/2026 11:42

These are the two kinds of Labour voters the self righteous rich and the working classes. Unless this integration/immigration issue is cracked down on Labour will lose the working class vote because they are the ones very much affected

They've already lost much of their "working class" vote, @Whysnothingsimple, as seen in what's happened in their more traditional areas such as Yorkshire which has just been mentioned

Trouble is these are the very people who built this country and still keep it running, but Labour are no longer interested in real work or building things unless it's for for their very narrow preferred demographic

Do you not want to at least get his name right out of basic human decency? You’re being unnecessarily rude.

Thefastandthecurious5 · 11/05/2026 10:25

Also, @CornishDaughteroftheDawn, @Philgooglemail is not comparing ‘the Holocaust’ (specifically, the Nazis’ extermination of 6 million European Jews) to Reform, but in fact comparing Hitler’s speeches to Farage’s speeches - and they’re oddly similar. I think Phil is absolutely right to point this out. What are your thoughts?

I’m not sure she’s capable of understanding the wider picture because she is very much a product of her upbringing and circumstances, without the intellectual curiosity to further inform her beliefs. She’s a local politician but not a global leader.

Exactly this

Part of me would almost like to see her as PM just for the amusement value, but then I remember what her self-perpetuated gobshite image would do to us on the world stage and crush the thought down

The unions seem quite keen on her though, so how that'll play out is anyone's guess

Urm, did he say he would smash the gangs in a week of being in power? 2 weeks? A month? Did he give a timescale? Or are you just wanting instant gratification, tiktok style?

Lol over lies to get into power. That's every party, every manifesto. I do hope you're as scathing and unreasonable when Reforms promises turn out to be lies.

There is absolutely no way they should go more anti.Immigration. it will alienate many of their voters, and they will never hopefully be as anti immigration as the right wing parties.

Really?
Look at Labour in Yorkshire.
Never been anything but Labour wards- they are now Reform. Unheard of.
People are sick to death of immigration and ''asylum' seeking and government will fail to listen at its peril... whoever it may be.

You can’t state that someone is anti semitic based on the claims of a schoolboy who knew him 50 years ago. That is scraping the barrel but quite positive because it shows how little you actually have.

Yes you absolutely can. Farage wasn't just anti Semitic to one schoolboy 50 years ago, he racially abused a significant number of them and they have gone on the record about this. He also sang Nazi songs, praised Hitler and went around making a hissing noise at Jewish classmates to put them in mind of a gas chamber.

If a Labour politician had spent their youth behaing in this abhorrent way we would, quite rightly, never hear the end of it.

The entire establishment swung into action to prevent Corbyn winning an election based on mostly spurious allegations of anti-Semitism, but with Farage somehow it doesn't matter?

Most people are considering immigrating because of tax reasons, which is so concerning.

We're moving BACK to UK because of tax and inheritance rules. Where I live you pay 50% on anything over 28k of earnings. Wouldn't even be able to fully own my own house or savings if dh died as dd would automatically inherit a share of both - and tax would be payable by both of us. On my OWN house and OWN joint account. I want to know where people are going where they are going to pay less tax?

Itchthescratch · 11/05/2026 11:25

Whysnothingsimple · 11/05/2026 11:18

The thing is the term “immigration” is used to describe a much wider issue. It’s not just the numbers coming in it’s the erosion of our culture that actually people are most angry about. People who aren’t affected by it because they are either in very affluent or indigenous areas probably can’t understand what it’s like living in areas where it feels like British culture and language is being erased. If the only non- white British people they come across are highly integrated then they are probably thinking “what’s the problem?”

These are the two kinds of Labour voters the self righteous rich and the working classes. Unless this integration/immigration issue is cracked down on Labour will lose the working class vote because they are the ones very much affected.

The strange thing about this is that the left wing are generally the most keen to appreciate the value of preserving cultures in other countries. If they heard about a load of westerners going over to some country and colonising it through immigration and then attempting to erase or completely change the indigenous culture then they would be the first to complain.

The left though seem completely blind to this when it's our own cultures and traditions that exist both nationally and locally. It isn't racist to want to preserve these things and worry when they are threatened by large scale immigration. Some areas near where I was born are now completely unrecognisable. We have lost an immense amount of working class tradition and culture that nobody important clearly thought had any value. It's a travesty.

Or listen to what the people of this country actually want? People do not (in general) want more illegal immigrants. They do not want their taxes going up at the same time as welfare spending going up whilst dealing with increased COL themselves.

Labour are not LISTENING.

Yes. That’s it condensed, isnt it?

I didn’t vote Labour because they U-turned on reforming winter fuel payments and 2-child benefit cap.

That’s the only reason I didn’t vote Labour. Nothing to do with immigration.

The danish population is 6 million, the uk population is 70 million. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. The Uk population is far too large for the size of country which means we can’t be nimble to change things quickly as they can in Denmark.

Edited

I completely agree. It is like comparing apples with oranges but there are always people that like to pretend that if we just taxed people more that our GDP per capita would miraculously jump, we would become richer and be able to afford all these lovely, well funded public services without painful sacrifices from the general population.

It's like a family on £60k comparing themselves to a family on £100k and wondering if they could ascertain a similar lifestyle through spending their money differently. Realistically something will always give when you don't have the same amount of money.

Johnson lied - as in denying things that clearly had happened - and he was dishonest about Brexit. Either he never intended to adhere to the terms of the Brexit agreement or he had simply never read it.

Being unable to immediately deliver on a manifesto point is not the same as lying.

Your second point is interesting. If Starmer and Labour have "no power outside of the UK to smash gangs or do anything else [to stop illegal immigration]" doesn't the same logic apply to Farage? His two ex-Tory ministers, Braverman and Jenrick, already know this to be the case as they failed when they were the Home Secretary and Immigration Minister in the previous government. So by your own definition, is Farage lying - or is he just using "immigration" as a way of stirring up dissatisfaction?

Farage - both almost certainly.

Labour will never understand economics, as a poster up thread said, socialism can never work, because as lovely as it sounds it’s just not how the majority of humans work.
I’ve said this previously and I’ll say it again; every labour government borrows heavily, every conservative governments tries to make up the deficit. If the previous labour government had stayed in power, they too would have to have made unpopular choices. This labour government have managed to go even further to fuck up the economy. It’s predictable and so boring, because next government in, will have no choice but to cut the welfare bill. Hitler got into power because economically Germany was broken, the people were suffering, and Hitler promised a Utopia to the German populace (okay I’m putting it in very simplistic terms) but all governments need to read the warnings. I don’t want reform in, but nor do I want to be ruled by a party driven by spite and envy (vat of private school fees), or a party that doesn’t understand how businesses work (labour are going to drive up inflation if they carry on with their current plans).
what I want is a common sense party which;
understand how economics work and encourage businesses
you need private investors and businesses to grow an economy but you also need the government to invest as well
you need sensible not punitive tax systems in place.
we need to tackle the problems within schools; teachers need more autonomy and a huge shake up of education, to make it accessible to all.
we need a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour.
we need to invest in much better mental health support (it’s always been the poorer cousin to physical health and a backwater for investment into research)
we do need to tackle economic immigration.
we need to sort out our bloody roads out!!
we need politicians with integrity, who are willing to stick their head above the parapet, and make choices which not everyone will want or like.

I agree with all of your post and on this This labour government have managed to go even further to fuck up the economy.,

They to seem to be turbo charging the fuck up. Do they actually hate being in government and want to get out as quickly as possible so they can go back to carping at the Tories from the sidelines? I am bemused.

The Danes are significantly richer than us. The UK's GDP per capita is only 60% of the Danish figure. This means they can afford to pay more tax and still take home more money than us (well over $4k a month versus just over $3k a month for UK workers).

It's understandable why the UK population are against paying more tax when their standard of living and purchasing power is already much lower. There is simply less money in the pot in the first place to redistribute through taxes. It's a completely different proposition.

The danish population is 6 million, the uk population is 70 million. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. The Uk population is far too large for the size of country which means we can’t be nimble to change things quickly as they can in Denmark.
