I went away last month for 1 night with work, due to planning an event, in Liverpool, I’m from London.

the event week is here, and now I’ve got 2 nights away, Tuesday - Thursday.

I hated the 1 night I did a few weeks ago, I couldn’t sleep, barely slept Infact, took me ages to fall asleep and when I did, I was tossing and turning every 2 hours.

I get scared about someone breaking in or something ridiculous and I just can’t relax, the bed is unusual. I hate it.

I don’t want to wish my life away, but I want it to be 9am Thursday morning and I’m already on the train home.

ugh

AIBU?

I bring a door wedge when I travel, or if I forget wedge a chair and balance my keys on the door handle.

This is so incredibly dangerous

YABU. You’re an adult. Get yourself together.

An old fashioned rubber wedge doorstop on the inside of the hotel room door will stop anyone being able to push it open when you're in there.

Could you try to make yourself sleep better by making the place feel more like home? Room spray, a pillow case you're familiar with, making your usual hot drink before bed, hot water bottle, reading your book for a bit before turning the light out?

No idea if you're being unreasonable but it seems an excessively disproportionate response to a few nights away in a hotel. Unless something unpleasant has happened to you in the past, just look on it as a mini holiday. Bath or shower as you like, watch what you want on telly in bed, go for a wander around the city in the evening and find somewhere to eat. I love a work trip away.

Youspurnme · 10/05/2026 18:17

What exactly are you worried about?
(are you at the ACT?)

HelenaWilson · 10/05/2026 18:15

Push the chair up against the door if you're afraid of a possible intruder.

Will you be spending time in the evening with people from the event? If not, get yourself some nice things to eat and drink, something you've been wanting to read on your tablet, warm shower and stretch out on the bed in your dressing gown.

Don't worry in advance about not sleeping. Strange bed, stress of having to do the event, might keep you awake. Just tell yourself it's no big deal and you can catch up when you get home.

I am a worrier too.

You can buy a cheap metal device that fits to the hotel room door that stops anyone being able to open it from outside even with a pass key (I’ve been robbed in a hotel room by someone using a pass key so I do worry).

I stay in hotels for work sometimes and I absolutely love it 😄

Owly11 · 10/05/2026 18:12

I also hate sleeping away from home, absolutely hate it. YANBU.

OneTimeThingToday · 10/05/2026 18:10

Would a doorstop or other security measure help you fel safer?

Fidgety31 · 10/05/2026 18:09

You don’t sound well travelled if a hotel room is making you feel this way ?
Maybe see it as an opportunity, rather than worrying about things that probably won’t happen !

Spaghettifountain · 10/05/2026 18:05

That's my dream. I don't catch a break at home with the kids. So yes YABU in my opinion
