So what can in practical terms fully halt illegal immigration?

Wellwhatnowbellaboo · 09/05/2026 10:06

Reform has won by a landslide .... immigration is probably by the look of it the biggest issue. What can realistically without breaking laws be done to really halt this with a big impact ? What would Farage actually do ? Would and should we as a country break some laws to get this done and speak to what people really feel is an issue ? (Many countries do). This is not in labour's dna so I doubt anything will come if it now ... but if you've thought about it or you have solutions what are they ?
And if you are opposed- why and what's the answer ?

Have you visited many families in this accommodation?

I have

Last family I worked with had water dripping through the light fitting in a house that would not have been able to be let on the open market.

So yes, thats 4 people, 2 adults and 2 kids they had, no housing costs, no bills, no council tax. 200 quid a week to pay for food, travel, clothes, toiletries, cleaning stuff, haircuts etc

Education is free obviously, so is health care.

Education and heath care are anything but free.

Who do you think pays for that?

If they can’t afford to pay people a proper wage they shouldn’t be operating.

So that’s the NHS closing down now then. Should be fine sounds like a luxury anyway.

Why would the entire family be unemployed? The majority of pip claimants are working.

Because they care for children? More beneficial.

A disabled child won't be working. My point is that the parents are taking much more then they are generating. It's now more state benefits paid out than received in income tax.

Yes, although usually from charities.

So not provided.

(I know this by the way, my work includes working with asylum seeking families)

What does that remind me of? Yes, "Germany for the Germans" ("Deutschland den Deutschen") "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer"... Both well known slogans born in the last century. It's been a staple of ethnocentric thinking in Central Europe but never a British tradition.

No it doesn't because you didn't live in that time. I've never heard that phase so apologies if there is some Nazi thing but I'm not aware.

Australia says you assimilate and become Aussie or else get out. Japan, doesn't want you. This is what I've heard so not just Poland.

Yet you want to invite a load of people that a different and completely different culture to your country and expect it to all get along.

By the way a girl in Spain had her throat slit yesterday by a visitor..... Jews attacked in the UK... When are you going to realise that we need something done? The streets are not safe . And that's not all people who move in here and that's also local people who are causing issues as well.

It's absolutely terrifying.

I think Britain has lost its identity therefore anyghing goes.

I agree! And I apply the same to the businesses whose staff need state benefits to top up meagre wages.

The benefits include child benefit and pension. More.ober 60s then under 16s.

Child benefit accounts for about 4% of tha total bill and pension about 40%.

Because your local family with five children and one disabled is now without work, getting housing, plus support, and not contributing. Now it's £1400 a month just for the children. That's on top of whatever they get for accommodation,.adults, council tax and NHS bills

Objectively, the only solution is to go back into the EU and fully utilise the provision that allows return to the 1st safe (EU) country.

The reason for the small boats is Brexit. Traffickers know that people can't be easily sent back because we are outside the EU.

The irony is excruciating that one of the key architects of the Brexit disaster, Farage, is the one benefitting from the one of the problems it caused while Starmer, who has done more than anyone else to stop the boats, is the one being punished.

Farage won't be able to stop them either. Not without doing something illegal like trying to turn the boats back mid-channel and that will be challenged in the courts. But it won't matter, he will be provided with every get out and excuse under the sun by his supporters, both voters and billionaire press owners.

The problem for Labour is that it is understood to not be racist towards Muslims, unlike Reform, so people believe that they want illegal immigration because the boat people will vote Labour. Even if Farage can't stop the boats, the British MAGA will be content in the knowledge that he shares their racism and hatred of immigrants (apart from rich ones obviously).

Objectively, this entire post is utter bollocks.

They mean the costs of accommodation. No council tax, rent, utility etc. So that's probably £200 a week as furnished as well. And they are in good spots

Each country has to agree to take the person back. We would have to have proof of the country in the first place

The legal route for someone to claim asylum in this country is to do so at point of entry, there is no other route.

Yes and so they throw away their passport.
But then they can’t claim asylum. Then they can’t bring their family over. And when do we stop? When we have how many million? What if 10 million want to come here? Because that is a realistic point. Even if it’s valid, the conversations need to be had. Do we keep raising taxes until we are done and every single person can take no more. I may not be right, but when we lived in West Africa, every single young man wanted to come to the UK.

They aren't coming here for the benefits. They come here to work. Without that additional workforce, a lot of older people would not have anyone to look after them. That might be me, you, our relatives, anyone needing that care.

Be careful what you wish for.

Are your relatives addicted to having their nails done and their car washed?

Do they take drugs?

If they don’t then they will be fine.

Tauranga · 09/05/2026 17:27

Purplebunnie · 09/05/2026 11:49

And at least we would know who they are and if they are accepted they can get a job and start contributing.

At the moment we have people arriving and sometimes we know about them and sometimes we don't. From the news it would appear a lot of those we don't know about end up employed in shops to sell counterfeit goods

What job can they " get"....or rather...whose job?

Great idea to let the world in to the UK to depress wages of those doing unskilled work, already getting a low wage.

Hahahaha omg so naive. If they come on a visa to care, as soon as the 2 years is up they are gone

What I fail to understand is why the government are complaining so bitterly about the benefits bill and seem to begrudge uk citizens a penny whilst being quite willing about housing and feeding any random person turning up on our shores. There was a bbc article a couple of weeks ago that said that lawyers help people to pretend they're gay in order to be granted asylum. This is tolerated whilst disabled uk people are demonised.

This is bound to piss people off. Why is the government taking this stance?

If you had to flee your country would you want to live in a country where you already know people who live there, you speak the language and understand the culture or would you go somewhere where you know no one and couldn't speak the language?
There is no compulsion to seek asylum in the nearest safe country. It is also impractical. Are you saying the UK shouldn't take any asylum seekers?

They are not " fleeing". They are flocking.

Reduce the comfy life and benefits offered here. I honestly think that's the only way.

People aren't coming here for the weather, that's for sure.

They are economic migrants so this is where the action needs to be.

Surely it’s easy to see the connection between the massive grey economy, the endless shops that are only a front for illegal activity and the thousands of illegal migrants.

The government needs to deal with the pull factors.

Reduce the illegal work opportunities, be tough on crime and reduce the cushy accommodation.

Accommodation, utility bills, food all paid for. Usually they get clothes and phones and all basic needs are taken care of. Plus a small allowance for anything extra. I would call that a benefit, wouldn’t you?

What else do you want to give to classify it as a comfy benefit, a car allowance?
