I'm from the North and profoundly embarrassed at the number of Reform councillors elected in my local area. Also wondering "will they never fucking learn?" They tell each other such ridiculous shit about the sunshine and roses life they would have under Reform and are seemingly incapable of taking in any information to the contrary. That said, considering that Reform royally fuck up any council they get control of, perhaps it's good that thus has happened now. By the time there is a general election, everyone will know what charlatans they are.

I'm in the south, in a Lib Dem/ Conservative seat (never much between them) this time Lib Dem won BUT with Reform a close run 2nd.

voter turn out 48%

im hoping its a kick up the arse people needed to vote in the GE & the mess Reform will make of many councils is enough to stop people voting for them in a GE.

I don't know what the answer is, but I know it's NOT Reform.

What do you mean by what's going to "happen" to them?

I'm still waiting to hear what OP actually meant by this.

Cooshawn · 09/05/2026 08:27

No, Brexit has had a huge impact. It isn't so much the returns under the agreement, but the obligation to prevent crossings. As soon as Brexit came in France shrugged their shoulders and removed their resources from it because it was no longer their problem. Hence the number of crossings soared.

No. Crossing also soared across the Med at the same time to Italy and Greece, so it was migration by boat in general that soared, not just ones to UK.

Bluebuddha10 · 09/05/2026 08:54

What an ignorant post.

We did not all vote for Brexit nor Reform.
Across the Manchester suburbs (not GM) it was mainly Greens that got in.
There are just as many idiots down South.

Sartre · 09/05/2026 08:43

Batties · 08/05/2026 22:34

lots of us from the north did not vote for Reform or Brexit. So please stop with the condescending “will they never fucking learn”

ETA- not all of the new Reform councils are in the north or wales, some are in the south of England

Edited

Yes but OP is clearly directing this at those in the north who did vote Brexit/ Reform.

Had this chat with some of my students the other day. One of them is from an area in South Yorkshire that massively benefited from the EU, they took millions of pounds of EU money to regenerate the area then voted leave… Beggars belief really.

I don’t know what to say other than the electorate are clearly embittered and taking a stance. In ways it’s kind of nice to get away from the two party state we’ve lived in for donkeys years but in other ways, sad. I can only hope Reform councillors fuck up really and put people off voting for them in the GE.

Femalemachinest · 09/05/2026 08:38

Getting a bit fed up of reading threads of people calling other people stupid because their thoughts/values dont aligned. People are entitled to their opinions. Do you think the smartest people in the world agree on everything. In a world where's theres so much false information out there its not even particularly easy to find the facts.

I have a close friend who I have differing political opinions with, not once have we called each other stupid. We just respect that.

Also from the north.... I had no election. Will not vote reform. But also will never vote Labour.... not because I think people are stupid doing so but because my life and their policies dont match. Maybe i'll never learn ey

Have they delivered improved services while massively reducing your council tax bill, though? Because that’s what they promised you at the last local elections.

Worcestershire is reform led council. We have had a 9% council tax increase

Cooshawn · 09/05/2026 08:33

GoldMoon · 09/05/2026 07:26

I think you need to educate yourself .
Large parts of the North did not even get a vote yesterday so we were no part of it .
I live in Cumbria and we were not voting .

That's because they operate on a different cycle, probably whole council elections, where other councils tend to operate on a proportion cycle basis (usually thirds) so rather than having a fully new council every 3 years, the seats are staggered over the term.

What that actually means is that we haven't yet seen the full impact of the Reform surge. Majority of the swing went to no overall control, but only because there weren't enough seats in each council up for election for Reform to take a majority. The next round will result in a lot more Reform councils.

Probably because they believe the anti immigration news in the papers. Much easier to pretend that we are being taken over by brown people than to give genuine facts.

Look at the immigration numbers.
Look at the pro-Palestine marches every weekend for 2 years.
That’s what people see.

AlexaStopAlexaNo · 09/05/2026 08:29

They will get what they deserve. Shame it’s inflicted on others too.

Cooshawn · 09/05/2026 08:27

The impact of Brexit is likely to have been minimal – the decline in returns predates it, and, in practice, few people were returned under the Dublin Agreement (an average of 560 a year between 2008 and 2020).

No, Brexit has had a huge impact. It isn't so much the returns under the agreement, but the obligation to prevent crossings. As soon as Brexit came in France shrugged their shoulders and removed their resources from it because it was no longer their problem. Hence the number of crossings soared.

I’m Irish so no skin in the game really. But I watch with interest as reform like parties start to gain traction here. It seems like a significant section of society feel like they have been shafted and they are voting for a party that wants to blow up the status quo.

Treating those voters as stupid is to our detriment. The system isn’t working for people. I don’t think that Reform is the answer but more centrist parties need to learn from their tactics.

Indeed. People are desperate for someone, anyone to give them hope when all feels hopeless. Reform, Trump, far right whatever it is, they give simple headline messages that translate into hope.
Of course in reality things are not that simple and none of it works. Brexit to stop immigrants and fix the NHS? Hasn't worked even a jot. But that was the hope people voted for.
Mainstream parties are doing a terrible job of giving clear hopeful messages and have not delivered in power. I haven't voted Reform and never would but I am honestly at a loss as how we get out of this situation

Castellio · 09/05/2026 08:05

people here ‘could’ work 2/3 jobs and like in a house share and get on, but it’s not the standards of living that we used to have even 20 years ago. You got a job, you did it, you came home (nice council house or place you could afford to buy) and you had an ok life. The life you describe of sharing accommodation and working more than 40 hours a week is a worse standard of living that we used to have. Many immigrants are driving that worse standard of living by undercutting the Brits by being prepared to accept worse standards of living. If Deliveroo relied on Brits doing the delivery all of a sudden they’d be paying a lot more because they’d have to (and there’d be fewer illegal e-bikes around!).

Its not skilled workers doing their bit that people object to at all. I’m not a Reform voter and don’t support most of their policies. I’m just trying to explain the logic.

You are being totally disingenuous. Please quit wit the faux ignorance.

Do you think people object to mass immigration of people who come and earn high salaries and pay more than they take from the system?

I didn't come here as a high salary earner. I am still not one - I work for the NHS, as I mentioned. But the for the first 10 years in the UK I worked a minimum salary job and then studied to improve my earnings potential. But I always worked and I paid for shit housing for many years and made sacrifices to be able to afford a better life. Please tell me why people in economically deprived areas are not able to do the same? What stops them from moving into a shitty shared housing in a city with better job prospects working 60+ hours a week and investing in their education? Is it immigration?
Yes. I am aware that jobs are hard to come by today but this has not been the case until recently. There is a high proportion of migrants doing low paid work and yet British nationals are responsible for 85% of universal credit bill. Why is that? I don't think it's because we've "taken your jobs". I personally never went to an employer to beg them for a lower salary on account of my non-Britishness.
This anti-immigrant rhetoric has been going on for decades and I am very glad you have time in your life to fume about it. I don't. I have to go to my second job in a minute.

Exactly. Reform do well in areas where large gangs of foreign men gather to leer at girls. Reform voters aren’t voting Reform because they object to so many highly trained heart surgeons coming over.

Though I will say that although there will be a lot of anti-English policies now Plaid Cymru have won in Wales.
Penalties on second homes etc.

They do despise the English. It's in the DNA of the party. They'll deny it of course.

It's hard for English people to grasp this as it's not a two-way street.

What can you do, though. Sometimes you've got to vote to keep out the lesser of two evils.

How are penalties on second homes anti-English? If by penalties you mean extra council tax, councils in Wales already have the power to do that.

There are lots of English people living in Wales. Some will have voted for Plaid.

Theyll get what they voted for and complain that they didn't understand that voting for face eating leopards would mean leopards would eat their faces.

I’m in Lancashire and did not vote for either Brexit or Reform.
But thanks for thinking that ALL of us northerners are thick as mince.

FatterthanBarbie · 09/05/2026 07:32

I hate crap like this. Thick northerners voting Reform. Suffolk and Essex have equally voted Reform. Where is your concern for them?

OneTealShaker · 09/05/2026 07:31

Walkyrie · 08/05/2026 23:07

Reform has a fair few non white councillors and members. Remember the so called ‘far right’ Tory cabinet who are held responsible for ruining the country were also very very diverse.

If a non white person steps out of their lane and has the audacity to want lower immigration, watch them get totally skinned by the ‘kind’ left. All of a sudden the left has no issue with being racist.

OnceUponATimed · 09/05/2026 07:30

Walkyrie · 08/05/2026 22:42

Depends, will the elite ever ‘fucking learn’ how to cater to the wishes of the public re immigration and thus win their vote back? They’ve had 20 years.

You know Reform are the elite and most are the same people as were in power for years.

The surgeon who performed life saving heart surgery on DH last year was an immigrant. In fact 75% of the cardiac surgeons in the only hospital in our county that performs heart surgery are either immigrants or the offspring of immigrants.

I am also the daughter of an immigrant.

More faux ignorance. 75% of immigrants are not surgeons, though? Are they.
