AIBU to find my husband's constant undressing at home annoying?

My husband has asked me to post on here to guage opinions.
The minute he gets in the door he takes his top off, often- his trousers too and will just be wearing pants. He says it is more comfortable.

I'm starting to find it really annoying, once in a while if it's really hot it makes sense. But it is literally all summer and winter. It means he can't ever answer the door, just pop into the garden or grab something from the car. And to be honest, I just don't like it.

Apparently it is completely normal (his dad did it too) and he thinks I would be surprised because everyone does this in their own homes??

Is he really boiling, Jackie?

It would annoy me, too. It is a bit weird.

Put a shirt on Martin is what popped into my head too 😁

I’m hoping it’s a Borat style thong

She’s said they were skimpy

Beesandhoney123 · 08/05/2026 18:41

Striding around in budgie smugglers ? What if there is a playdate? Does he get dressed?

Get him to to the cooking and barbecues. He'll get dressed.

Has he always done this?

lottiegarbanzo · 08/05/2026 18:41

But also, I don’t want to visit your house or sit on your sofa. Yuck. Pants are thin, scant and allow lots of germs (plus any stray liquid) through. They’re not a furniture-worthy body covering. 🤢🤮

TheYorkshirePudding · 08/05/2026 18:39

He’s using underpants for an excuse for his lazyitis. Jogger shorts. Both my DH and I change into comfy clothes at the speed of light when we get in from work

Thank you for all your replies. I think some have helped me articulate to him much better than I was doing before. He was offended and took it to be a statement on his body. But I did say to him that I wouldn't love it if he was in his pjs all day. I think know we've taken that side of it out - he seems to be a bit more amenable to the conversation. Thanks all x

Oh gosh yes, it's nothing to do with DH's body.
I just wouldn't like him sitting/walking around in his pants and nothing else.
And frankly I can't imagine him wanting to do that either 😆

Or that mankini leotard thingy!

independentfriend · 08/05/2026 18:34

I'm with the eugh reaction - you don't want bare skin shedding on the sofa / other upholstery. You don't want him dropping chest hair in the pot of boiling pasta. He also doesn't really want to lose the protection of clothing from injury / spills whether that's spilling hot meals on his skin or getting it covered in DIY stuff. And it's territorial bad manners. Everybody else is wearing clothes so he should be doing the same.

You can get round some of the above with specific agreements ie. if your skin is touching the sofa spread a towel out where you're sitting. If you're cooking you must wear clothes, if you're eating a hot meals you must wear a shirt, but really being minimally clothed at home isn't unreasonable.

If it's a temperature issue he could try stripping naked, having a shower/bath and redressing in clean minimal but decent clothing - vest / t shirt, pants and shorts with some slip on footwear available.

Yes, it's worth working out what fabrics feel ok next to his skin - natural fibres would be my starting point and cutting out labels / wearing things inside out if seams irritate etc.

Tell him cotton will cool him down better than nudity

SpaceAngel1999 · 08/05/2026 18:33

Bit odd, stick a pair of shorts and a tshirt on

What kind of pants does he wear OP?

I’m hoping it’s a Borat style thong

How can you think that you being fully clothed is the same as a man just wearing tight pants?

😂😂😂. I know

poster must have missed the naked part

Canonlythinkofthisone · 08/05/2026 18:31

Jesus. This has given me PTSD of my own darling mother. She used to just chill in her pants all weekend, sometimes nothing at all. Mortifying. She wouldn't even get dressed if I had friends round. God love her 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I might get changed as soon as I get in, but into clothes. Same for DH

I don't want to make light of this, but it did make me think of Martin in Friday Night Dinner 😁

Me too.

Lovely bit of squirrel.

RIP wonderful Paul Ritter

SoapBenCircleTops · 08/05/2026 18:29

I bought dh some pyjama shorts for a stint in hospital, it was genuinely boiling on the ward so normal pyjamas would have been too hot and he didn't want to sit around in just underwear. Might be worth a Google.

I change into (clean) pjs or loungewear the second I get home, take my bra off and shove my hair up. Suppose that’s a similar thing.

How can you think that you being fully clothed is the same as a man just wearing tight pants?

Cocktailglass · 08/05/2026 18:27

As soon as I'm in the door, bra and work clothes off and change into something more comfortable. Though I wouldn't really mind DH being in just pants I can't see why he couldn't just put a pair of shorts on.

LBFseBrom · 08/05/2026 18:25

Get him some loose fitting drawstring waist shorts and t-shirts, vest style for hot weather.

Many years ago I knew a man who did that every day, stripped down to his underpants. He also sat on the floor rather than a chair. He was a heavy drinker too.

His children could never have anyone visit.

GlosGirl82 · 08/05/2026 18:25

I could NOT cope with this

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 08/05/2026 18:16

But that’s not what I said? So you’re answering points that I never said I agreed with.

As I explicitly said, going outside in your pants is not the same thing as being in the privacy of your own home in your pants. Again, I have also been clear that it’s not reasonable to have other people in your house and be just in your pants.

At home my nephews are walking around in their pants, and I think that’s normal. But when people turn up they will go and put on some clothes as they aren’t comfortable around other people in their pants. Because there’s a difference. I want to walk around naked in front of my DW, I don’t think that’s dysfunctional.

I can’t speak for how it would be around kids, but I don’t think children shouldn’t be taught that bodies are shameful, and that nudity is wrong. As I said, you shouldn’t go to far the other way and traumatise children by making them uncomfortable being completely naked past a certain age, but seeing their dad in a pair of pants is no different to what they’d see at a pool, so why is that dysfunctional?

Your first post just said “bodies aren’t dysfunctional” - then you went on to give situational caveats and now you’ve said pants are just shorts - so presume it’s ok to go out in pants - they clearly are not shorts - you would get arrested for sure - men in shorts in Macdonald’s with no top (which ia regular in summer) is now men in pants no top - quite quite different things

on the contrary - I think it would be teaching children the opposite of privacy and my own body in terms of empowering them around sexual abuse - it would be saying men can walk around and eat their dinner In pants and that’s ok - if you see it out in the world don’t be alarmed - whereas you need the to be alarmed

is not being too modest to have clothing standards - it’s teaching respect for your body and others

read the poster from Scandinavia where the are much more forward thinking about nudity - the benchmark countries really - they wouldn’t sit down to dinner in knickers

RodJaneandBungle · 08/05/2026 18:24

Don’t answer the door make him do it in his pants. Refuse to enable him any longer (not your fault btw). Don’t go outside bcos he’s not dressed even if is for the kids. Seems like this hot business has got secondary gains for him like getting out of having to share the load. If he’s that hot he’s got a health problem. If his Dad did it it’s been reinforced as normal but it’s not!! Failing that LTB lol!

WongLynchFellini · 08/05/2026 18:22

I don’t think it would bother me unless it was a way to get out of doing things like taking the dog for a pee in the garden or answering the door or whatever. It would piss me off if I was always the one who had to do that because my partner wasn’t dressed.

Unclothed bodies in the daytime, unless ill, signals:

Laziness
A lack of productivity
Possible poor mental health
A lack of consideration for others in the household
A lack of intention of leaving the house again that day, even to get something from the car. So forget going out for a spontaneous walk or drink or dinner.
A lack of awareness that we are adults and adults are clothed in the daytime

Need I go on? Sitting about in your pants during the daytime is what toddlers do and it's dysfunctional for an adult to do it.

Would give me the major ick.

Speaking of men acting like toddlers, I was at a friend's house once and her DP was watching TV. Except...it was cartoons, and he was sitting on the floor watching it, quite close, gazing up at it. He looked JUST like a child! 🤢🤣
