AIBU to find my husband's constant undressing at home annoying?

My husband has asked me to post on here to guage opinions.
The minute he gets in the door he takes his top off, often- his trousers too and will just be wearing pants. He says it is more comfortable.

I'm starting to find it really annoying, once in a while if it's really hot it makes sense. But it is literally all summer and winter. It means he can't ever answer the door, just pop into the garden or grab something from the car. And to be honest, I just don't like it.

Apparently it is completely normal (his dad did it too) and he thinks I would be surprised because everyone does this in their own homes??

I don't know anyone that does that. My first thought is that your house must be too hot, turn the heating down so he starts to feel chilly, then he might put his clothes back on. I also think it's quite unhygienic to have bare skin on sofas and arm chairs, they'll get dirty and smelly, I mean you can't wash those like you can wash clothes. Throw ice cubes at him at every opportunity...😆

In this case - WHICH THIS THREAD IS ABOUT (and in the vast majority of cases,) no-one else in the house will want to parade around in their knickers and nothing else.

But you know that don't you?

Your exact words were “If there are other people in the house, it's grim, and unnacceptable”. I’m asking in general why you think people shouldn’t be naked in their own home if everyone in that household is agreeable?

This reminds me of the dad in Friday Night Dinner!

BunnyLake · 09/05/2026 17:58

Is his name Murray Goldberg? (Sitcom based on the true family of the writer). His dad always stripped to his Y fronts when got home 🫣

And the difference between pants and shorts is...

I worked with a woman who couldn't function at home unless she was in joggers and a tee shirt

One is underwear, one is outerwear?

Isinglass20 · 09/05/2026 17:53

Any different from the pool at my gym where recently a fine figure of a man walked slowly passed the almost all ladies of a certain age aquarobics class with his skimpy speedos. Still not calmed down 🤣🤣

Jane143 · 09/05/2026 17:53

I personally would find that repulsive and also the fuel bills in winter would be high

I get home, go upstairs, have a wash and getting straight into my pyjamas.

I don’t strip off everything at the door and then walk into the living room in my bra and pants.

Yea it’s great to be comfortable, but if this means all the “jobs” are left to you because he’s sat in his pants then that’s not fair at all. I also think that sitting on your sofa/chairs with sweat from work and daily grime is disgusting. …..Is this the reason why you don’t like it? Or is it his physical appearance?

Where does he put the clothes that he takes off?

I wouldn’t say it’s not normal, because everyone is different; but if it’s hindering his ability to a productive member of his own household, then yes I’d be pissed off.

If you’re reading this husband…… come in, go upstairs AND WASH! Then come down in clean pants and with your dressing down over your arm, so if you need to nip to the car? You CAN!

Why is it ‘unacceptable’, providing others in the house are of the same mindset? 🤔

Fine if you live alone. If there are other people in the house, it's grim, and unnacceptable Put a t-shirt on for goodness sake, even if it's a sleeveless one/vest top, and a pair of light jogging bottoms or pyjama bottoms. I wouldn't be living with anyone who thinks it's OK to sit around (and wander around) the house in their fecking knickers, and nothing else! Hmm

Depends how fit he looks in his pants

Let's face it, the vast majority of men are NOT going to look 'fit' wearing just their knickers and nothing else. 🙄

Some people (myself included) just prefer not to wear clothes when temperature and situation allow. I don’t see any issue with that if it’s within the confines of their own home or garden.

I'm sorry for your predicament OP but this has really tickled me, because I read this thread in full agreement with your DH that nakey is normal and everyone does it.

I would have thought that for most people it isn't as they wouldn't be warm enough.

So did you think that everyone just stripped off when they got home?

Apparently not, from the votes! Whoops...😅

He certainly shouldn't use it as an excuse not to answer the door etc., that's what dressing gowns are for. But it sounds exhausting to me to be ready for visitors/outside at all times.

Even if you knew it made your partner and child uncomfortable?

No, obviously not. Fortunately DP has broadly the same mindset and my children are grown up and don’t live with us.

Underpants more comfortable

I never said they weren't, but that doesn't mean everyone should just walk around in only underwear all the time at home if they share a house with other people.

Poetnojo · 09/05/2026 15:38

Weeellokthen · 08/05/2026 17:51

That's way weirder than just wearing y fronts 😂

You think wearing actual clothes instead of just underwear is weird? Really? How odd!

RosyDaysAhead · 09/05/2026 09:02

Neurospicy household - this is normal for us, and for many more homes with neurodiverse people! The fact he thinks it’s normal is like “ding ding we have another member” in my head.

any chance he is adhd or asd? cos yeah, that is normal for us!

Im diagnosed with adhd and autism too as is my daughter, I have several family members who massively struggle with body temp regulation, we all prefer to be wearing as little as possible but have basic respect for each other

My 21 year old wouldn’t sit in her and knickers and bra around her brother and dad, no matter how hot she was, she goes to her room to do that, my husband likes to be in just his pants, he wears a lot of heavy safety stuff at work but but only strips to his pants once she had gone to bed, he could never relax if he was making his family uncomfortable. We both grew with dads very selfish dads who got their horrible behaviour dismissed as “he’s autistic he can’t help it” the kids who didn’t want to see their dads knob swinging around were expected to remove themselves from shared spaces.

If your son said he’s uncomfortable with his sister/you being in bra and knickers all the time, or your daughter says she finds her dad/brother being in tight underwear all the time upsetting, how would you navigate that? Im genuinely curious.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 09/05/2026 14:42

This would annoy me. Get changed into something comfy but not walking around in your boxers. Nobody wants to see that. Also be dressed enough to have people over and answer the door. At least until after tea when people are unlikely to come around.

Theuntold · 09/05/2026 14:21

Who gives a flying f**k if he’s ND or not.

MeridaBrave · 09/05/2026 14:19

Yuck no he can change into shorts and t shirt.

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/05/2026 14:11

CurlewKate · 09/05/2026 10:38

I hate it when men’s unacceptable behaviour is immediately put down to neurodiversity!

Sorry where did that poster immediately state the OP's DP must be ND?

They just asked the question.

As one of the other few posters here with a partner who does this... mine IS ND, not suspected, not self dx, officially dx, and by the NHS, not privately.

He gets too hot, mostly whilst sitting around, so to cook he'd stick a tshirt and shorts on. His clothes fit and are comfortable, he makes most of his trousers himself in order to get the fit and length he likes.
