AIBU to feel shaken after being criticised for blacking out at the airport?

Last night I returned back from a foreign holiday last night. I went with my parents and my godmother

At the foreign airport, DM cut her leg badly somehow with the either a luggage trolley or the barriers around the trolley park. Blood going everywhere. I have a phobia of blood and blacked out almost immediately. A couple of passengers ran into the terminal getting help. Whilst DF and GodM were getting tissues they had in their hand luggage. Another woman went up to my GodM and looked at me saying I’m a disgrace.

DM got first aid attention and was taken around the airport with assistance (airport was quiet). I recovered.

The four of us had a coffee, past security, and I went to the toilets with GodM. The woman who said I was a disgrace was there. She had a go at me. I said I have a blood phobia. She said I don’t care!

This woman’s attitude was horrible. I am not sure which flight she went on. She could have been on my flight- sitting on the opposite end of the plane.

I am still shaking from this woman’s attitude. I may not see her again.

I agree that she probably assumed you were drunk. YABU to care about the judgement of ignorant strangers though, just concentrate on your mum.

Just ignore her . It’s not like you could help it & none of her business anyway . I would have told her to fuck off but I appreciate that’s not the most diplomatic response

MotherofPufflings · 08/05/2026 08:49

She probably thought that you were drunk. Not that it's any excuse. She sounds pretty stupid.

Were you brought up to be a people pleaser and to care deeply what others think about you? I am and it's very difficult to disregard a stranger's opinion, even if you know that logically they're the one at fault and that their opinions don't matter.

Hope you're OK. You're not a disgrace!

You are being unreasonable to give the slightest consideration to this utter muppet of a woman. I hope your DM recovers soon.

Gosh what a horrible experience all round! I hope your mum is ok. You don't owe that horrible woman an explanation, she's not judge and arbiter of the world and can fuck off. People who vocalise a judgement based on fuck all knowledge really are the scourge of the modern world. It does feel horrible but she is not more entitled to exist than you are.

On the other hand if you haven't sought treatment for your phobia I probably would. Fainting in crisis situations is inconvenient to say the least. I'm sure you don't enjoy it though.

This 🙌!!!

That is ridiculous of her. You can't help your body's reaction to blood. So long as you weren't making the situation about you and demanding more attention than your godmother was getting (which I'm sure you weren't!), it really wasn't your fault.

I once fainted on a first aid course (the instructor was describing in quite some detail how to apply a tourniquet!). I felt that the instructor was quite critical of me afterwards. But I really didn't want to faint, I'd tried hard not to! I'm not sure what the solution is. Fyi interestingly when my daughter had to have an unexpected stay in hospital and have cannulas put in etc I was completely fine.

A stranger said that to you?? Then they are the disgrace. You cannot help your bodies function at all. Hope your DM is OK it sounds like a nasty cut.

It is. Skin came off and it’s about 3cm x 1.5cm. She had a similar cut on her other leg from walking into the oven door (she was cleaning it) and took 6 weeks of bandages to make sure the scab was fully dried. I say it’s going to be the same or another week as her other cut was on the side. This is on the front

She was just a random weirdo, OP. You’re probably projecting your natural
upset about the whole unpleasant incident onto her. Put her out of her head.

Oh fear! She's bonkers. People don't faint for fun. She should embarrassed by her weird reaction.

Unfortunately some people are just dicks and feel the need to say something unkind and unconstructive.

I hope your God M is ok and sorry you had that experience. 🌷
