AIBU to feel unsettled by DH telling me about his soulmate dream?

Feeling a bit odd.

Came home this evening and getting dinner ready in the kitchen and Dh came into the kitchen with a weird look on his face and said he had a really weird dream last night. He started to say it, then kept looking hesitant and stopped saying it, so I said ‘Go on, what was it?’ (thinking please just get on with it, whilst putting food in the oven and rushing around.
He said that he dreamt that someone or something was saying they’d found him his soulmate and the person he’s connected to and that then this man a woman (I think) then started hitting him really hard with shoes and all sorts with really nasty faces
It was just a really odd thing to come and tell me…literally straight away, not after other conversations and then ‘Oh god yeah I had this awful dream last night’ and also talking about a soul mate? What am I, chopped liver?!
I said (a bit angrily) why was he dreaming about a soul mate and he stormed off saying it was a dream

Is this weird? Feels very weird!

Is he coming down with something or unsettled by something else in his life? There's nothing to be read into it, but it sounds quite a horrid dream really. If you're concerned he's seen some kind of meaning in it - talk to him! Ask him how it's made him feel.

I’ve dreamt about cheating on and murdering my partner and having sex with my dad. Do you think people choose what they dream about? It’s a subconscious manifestation of things you’re thinking about, yes, but it’s not literal. I certainly wouldn’t choose to spend time thinking about those dream topics. You’re completely overreacting.

Edited

Literally, my dreams can be crazy. I’ve murdered someone and now have to cover it up, I’m being hunted. That I’m a man and I’m having sex with random women. I think my dads been naked in my dream before, which disturbed me. I can morph between being myself, to being a whole new character, sometimes my dreams are feature length film worthy. I don’t know why anyone would put too much stock in a dream.

OP, I’d tell my wife about that dream as it sounded disturbing and if she then got jealous of the dream I’d think she was a bit psycho tbh

Flymehomejeff · 07/05/2026 22:35

I tell my husband if I have dreams about other men. He doesn't care.

beebeebabs · 07/05/2026 22:32

Dreams are often insane. YABU.

I dreamt that Jensen Ackles was really mean to me when he was supposed to be my friend. Then he turned into lemon curd and I carried 'him' around in a jar.

I'd rather have a jar of delicious lemon curd than a mean friend!

Anonemousse · 07/05/2026 22:17

Dreams are a way of your brain untangling stuff and working through and processing. It's not always literal. Sometimes it's just a load of random meaningless images that your brain is putting deciding whether to keep or forget.

He sounds like he found the dream unsettling which was probably why he wanted to talk to you about it.

I guess one interpretation might be that his subconscious is working through him accepting that he has found what he needs. Not necessarily a relationship, maybe his job or something else significant.

I once dreamed that I was shot by Richard Whiteley. So I can assure you, you’re wrong.

He was a well known personality appearing on the TV- you might have been watching Countdown. So of course it's possible he was in your mind before you had the dream.

I dreamt I had sex with Paul Daniels. I think I’d rather be shot by Richard Whiteley 😳

Sorry you’ve totally overreacted. Then overreached. The poor guy had a fucking nightmare - and YOU threw a strop and walked off? Don’t worry - he won’t tell you anything now. It’s a DREAM. Two days ago I dreamt my dad was a giant slice of cheddar cheese and I had to ‘catch him’ using a butterfly net. Does this mean something?! I fucking hope not.

Vivisays · 07/05/2026 22:06

I can understand you feeling a bit defensive when he spoke about a ‘soulmate’ in the dream; soulmate could potentially mean a yearning/want for more emotional connection - not with someone else, but with you, perhaps? The shoe thing, in dream interpretation, can symbolise a fear of judgment or a sense of shame and the attack bit after being promised connection, could suggest an internal conflict with one part looking for more emotional closeness/intimacy and another part expecting rejection/hurt. Dream interpretation isn’t a science, obviously, it’s very interpretative so just thoughts really. You mentioned your DH was hesitant and somewhat reluctant to say what the dream was about, perhaps he felt anxious about it, even if it didn’t make sense to him. Dreams can sometimes bring unconscious anxieties to the surface, even if we don’t ‘understand’ the content, the feeling it leaves can be a clearer indication, if you understand me.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 07/05/2026 22:03

It was just a strange dream. I’ve dreamt about cheating on my husband a few times, and told him about it afterwards. He doesn’t care, they were dreams.

Well i would be put out by this because I believe that there is always a reason for our dreams. That they are triggered by something that has happened or something that we are thinking about when we are awake.

I once dreamed that I was shot by Richard Whiteley. So I can assure you, you’re wrong.

MaCheCazzo · 07/05/2026 21:58

Dreams are inexplicable. Of course they are or there would be a definitive proven handbook. There isn't. There may be strands of something you've taken from the day but it's stretched and bent out of shape and mixed in with a shit-ton of other bollocks and nothing makes sense.
Sometimes dreams are really fast and intense - really intense. When that happens it's perfectly normal to tell someone about it. They can unsettle you and I'd expect my partner to be very comfortable telling me about that knowing I would never judge what is essentially a load of ethereal unintelligible bollocks.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 07/05/2026 21:58

You’re a bit unreasonable. By dream logic, if his soulmate just beat him up with shoes and made nasty faces at him, that might mean you are going to hurt him!

Or it might mean someone is offering him something that seems really special, but is actually a nasty trick and will hurt and disappoint him.

Or it might mean he has a soul mate somewhere else, but that soulmate hates him.

Whatever it means, he came to his partner for a bit of tlc and told off.

Eclipsecomingsoon · 07/05/2026 21:58

He kept hesitating to tell me as though it may bother/upset me I think, it has! Wish he’d never said it

Sole mate maybe? Hence the shoes?

Sounds demonic, seriously. Who or what was finding him this 'soulmate' that then proceeded to abuse him? Not a nice dream. Why is he dreaming that? Can't answer that one, not enough information. It's disturbing though, and he's telling you because he may be frightened by it.

Yeah it’s really scary

This would be concerning to me too OP. Especially if he is emphasising on how he found his “soulmate” in his dream and quite excited about that.

Yes it was strange

Because he was unsettled by it?
What is it you’re worried about? That he’s going to go off searching for his soulmate?

That he had that dream and also saying that to me, I don’t know, I can’t explain, it feels strange

He's sat on that all day as well

Were you huffing and puffing whilst making the dinner? Maybe he was just on the wind up

No definitely not a wind up
