Now I don't mean something that was expensive but you really enjoyed, but where you felt ripped off.

I'll start.

26 euros for two Sprite's in Paris.

And this was circa 2014.

Burger King in Ibiza Airport. 2 normal adult meals and 2 kids was something like £55.

Edited

What is it with Foreign airports with McDonalds and Burger King being so expensive - Canaries was 34e for just two of us- we pay 20e for same thing here

Every time I've ever had to pay to use the toilet in a train station concourse. I'm already paying a fortune for the train, and now I have to pay 50p for a wee!!

Where? Mainline station toilets in London are now free.

Horselover90 · 07/05/2026 13:56

£32 on two Burger King meals last week

My Capital Gains Tax after the bastard fucking Tories clashed the lifetime Entrepreneurs' Relief by 90%.

If I'd sold my business two months earlier, I'd have paid £600K less tax.

They were meant to be the party of business innovative and free markets. Fucking cunts.

I'm so, so fucking bitter about it.

Let me just try and locate my tiny violin.

Assuming 24% CGT you'll have made a profit of £2,500,000 (probably more as no reliefs/allowances taken into account) and you're moaning about only having just under 2 million left, how very difficult for you.

Doesn’t Vegas have strict regulations about taxi prices? It’s something I was impressed by the one time I went there.

@Lomonald

You forgot to tell the taxi driver "DO NOT use the tunnel", didn't you........😂

I moved to London in the late 1970s and went up to JLP in Oxfor Street, asked for skin advice at the Clinique concession and was sold a bar of soap for £30... I remember this as it was 25% of my salary as a nurse. The soap did not agree with my face and dried out my skin...

I give Clinique a huge swerve now, any time I am in a department store, lest they spot the sucker sign above my head!

£6.50 for a side-dish of "Asian slaw" at Pizza Express. It was a couple of shreds of cabbage and vinegar in a miniature ramekin. I was flabbergasted. It was horrible too.

Oh another holiday one, "James Bond Island" in Thailand. As you get off the boat and walk along the pathway to the main bit there are lots of stallholders who block your way. I'm usually quite good at saying no thank you and striding on so we got past ok on arrival. On the way back my daughter (age about 8) and I needed to go to the loo (which was near the stalls). My daughter went out first and one of the stallholders started talking to her and plonked a pack of pens and a notebook in her hands. Then when I caught up told me I needed to pay. I said no thank you and tried to hand them back but while I was doing that she fastened a bracelet onto daughter's wrist. I then fumbled trying to take it off again and while I was doing that the lady put one on MY wrist (my right wrist which meant it was hard to remove for a right handed person). She was sooo deft and so fast!

Our tour guide was shouting that our boat was about to leave so I agreed to pay for the bracelets and one pack of pens. She quoted a price akin to about £40. I was prepared for this as when abroad i carry a "dummy" purse with a small amount of cash and a couple of expired cards. My reasoning is if I get mugged i can hand over the dummy one and keep my actual purse concealed. So I opened it and said oh look, this is all the money I have, you can have this and if it's not enough we will put the things back. But then my husband came over to hurry us up and thre lady's eyes lit up and said "your HUSBAND" and started on him to pay. He ended up handing over about £25 in addition to my dummy purse money just so we could escape and run for the boat! £35 for six colouring pens and two bracelets which snapped after a couple of months, what a rip off! She was very good at making a living though so kind of admired her!

£24 for two red wines in a London theatre a few years ago. Doesn't seem that bad now but at the time I was fuming.

We went to see Hamilton just after it opened, and the cost for two very generic glasses of Prosecco and some over packaged crisps was over £30!

southcoastsammy · 07/05/2026 13:50

12 hours for £12k. Bargain!

southcoastsammy · 07/05/2026 13:49

£12,000 for youngest to spend 1 night under observation in a US hospital. No treatment other than some oxygen. The annotated bill we received had ‘items’ such as the sections of tape used to hold the mask in place listed.

Thank Christ we had travel insurance.Best £80 we’ve ever spent! And no, the hospital wasn’t any different to any U.K. hospital. The treatment wasn’t any better, the staff were the same.

£5 for a bag of grapes in 2011, in the Co-op. Still not over it.

sockarefootwear · 07/05/2026 13:43

Paying about £40 for 3 bracelets made from elastic and a few beads. It was on a craft stall at a cafe on holiday and MIL/DC took a liking to them when we stopped for a drink. I asked the price and thought they meant in the local currency, which would have made it about £4. Stall holder insisted on putting them on MIL/DC and encouraging them to go to the play area whilst I paid- then told me the price was in Euros. Similar items in the local shops would have been about £1 each.

Also had pressure to be ripped off with a 'competition' for a family photo session. Supposedly a prize draw in a local shop and amazed that I actually won. The 'prize' was a free photo session and one photo. Only really wanted a photo of DD but they insisted on doing a 'family photo shoot' then insisted we had to go to their premises a week later to view all our photos. They were incredibly pushy when we said we only wanted the one (free) photo of DD and basically said we had wasted their time. Which I could have understood if we hadn't supposedly won it as a prize in a 'competition' run by them, and if we hadn't said from the start that we were only interested in one photo of DD.

$16 for two lattes in Manhattan in 2005. I knew I was being swindled. My friend knew as well - but we had to get to JFK for our flight home, so didn't tell the barista where to shove his beans.

GellerYeller · 07/05/2026 13:42

Local guy quoted ‘mates rates’ to paint our (tiny) hall and landing: £2000 for two people working over 5 days.
I did it myself in a weekend for £150 (thanks Wilko, RIP).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/05/2026 13:41

€6 each for tiny bottles of water in Geneva Airport.
And that was several years ago now.

And whatever it was (£££) that we paid for an evening’s parking* at the station car park in Richmond (Surrey) recently.

*max about 3 hours while we were at the theatre nearby.

A few years ago i went on a caravan holiday at a haven park. It cost me ££20 for a burger at the restaurant on site. I spent £17 at the fish shop and the food was disgusting.

Last time I was at a Haven there was a new coffee place and it was £6 for a slice of cake and this was before the CoL crisis.
I don’t mind if it’s nice cake but it was horrible.

Vision Express. Experiencing an occasional double vision while driving tired so popped in, work voucher in hand for one free eye test and pair of glasses.

Came out an hour later nearly £300 down as they insisted I needed sunglasses too, and the work voucher only covered about half the cost of the normal pair.

Worst thing was wearing them while driving was downright dangerous as they distorted my vision and were very disorientating.

Luckily they have a no questions asked returns policy, so returned both pairs a few weeks later. Lots of questions were asked but I politely brushed them all off and insisted on my refund. Now I try and get better sleep and not had the double vision for months luckily.

Years ago when I was early 20's I went into Selfridges and got a tiny pot of something like sweet & sour chicken from the deli, thinking I was really treating myself and expected it to be about £8 which was loads to me then. £32!!!! I was too embarrassed to say no and just paid, I then went to my car and cried!

Hmm, half my post seems to be missing. So I'll add;

School photos. They are £35++, for a drab grey unsmiling mug shot of my kid, slouched in ugly polyester uniform. Always with some sort of white faux brick "Victorian asylum recreation yard" looking backdrop, my kid gurning like an institutionalised Picasso painting (because one eye always looks an inch higher than the other in these photos, unlike the same eye in real life??)

I never buy them! I do get a good laugh though when they email a few of the "best" options, and imagine the person deciding which ones to send..all equally terrible and miserable 😂

I actually miss when all the siblings were photographed together, there would always be two looking totally normal and then one looking like a gremlin, or two looking like horrifying waxworks and one somehow pulling off a modelling shot 😂 All good fun.
