Asking friend to reschedule our day out because she said she’ll have to bring her child

I’m a mum to 2 small children, friend has 1 small child. This weekend we planned a childfree afternoon out, but her DP has forgotten and apparently booked something in. She now said she’ll have to bring her little one along.

AIBU to cancel and ask to reschedule and go and enjoy a nice afternoon out childfree by myself? This isn’t the first time her DP has done this

Absolutely fine to reschedule. It's your child-free time and that's incompatible with seeing her with child in tow.

YANBU

And I strongly suspect you know it!

Child free time is precious - I would hate to be around other people’s kids if mine aren’t there. Totally agree with you, OP.

Poppingby · 07/05/2026 10:40

Yes anyone with small children would surely accept that a child free day is a rare thing to be savoured!

Strange that she isn't telling her DP to reschedule if she had booked first.

It's important to have child free days and for the kids to be with both parents solo.

I'd definitely suggest a raincheck and go off do something nice yourself. No way would i be leaving my kids behind only to have someone else's kid there.

Branleuse · 07/05/2026 10:39

I'd also reschedule and I'd tell her that her dp is a prick to keep doing this, but you're not spending your child free time with someone elses kid.

Floppyearedlab · 07/05/2026 10:38

Do it and don't feel guilty in the slightest. There is no way I would swap a childfree meet up for one dragging children around and entertaining them.

Leeds2 · 07/05/2026 10:36

I would do exactly that! I think your friend should really have offered to reschedule,

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 07/05/2026 10:17

YANBU at all. Childfree afternoons are precious. You haven’t sorted care for your DC just to hang out with hers.

If she has an issue with anyone, it should be her DP.

Yup. There’s no way I’d be supposedly having a child free afternoon whilst entertaining someone else’s kid. You might as well have yours with you.

it’s either child free or it isn’t.
