Why is no one talking about Farage's £5 million gift/bribe?

The right wing press had kittens about Starmer receiving some free glasses, yet are shtum about Farage receiving £5 million in the twelve months prior to him becoming an MP. No one gives someone £5 million pounds. Farage is bought and paid for by a shifty, Thailand based billionaire. Why don't voters and the media care?

This investigation is not about being misquoted.

And as Trump is finding out, requests for financial evidence, diary and phone logs can be made

And England won the world cup in 1966.

Your go.

Farage's legal team managed to get a full on-air apology from BBC Newsnight last month for misquoting him - plus the Newsnight episode was removed from BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

I have a vague memory that people who count (not us plebs) can require a court to make the plaintiff lodge a bond for potential costs should the case be decided against them.

So in this case News International could ask the court to make Farage lodge (say £1,000,000) before the case is heard. And the source of that £1,000,000 would need to be 100% transparent.

Maybe some legal experts could help ? The reason I have it in my head is that I stopped someone suing previously in a high profile case.

How I learned to stop worrying and love AI 😀(Note the part about asset evasion. )

I have a vague memory that people who count (not us plebs) can require a court to make the plaintiff lodge a bond for potential costs should the case be decided against them.

Your memory is completely accurate, and the legal mechanism you are thinking of is called a Security for Costs order. 1]
In English civil litigation (and similar common law jurisdictions), the general rule is that the "loser pays" the winner's legal costs. If a defendant is worried that a claimant has "nothing to lose" or will disappear if they lose the case, the defendant can ask the court to step in. 1, 2, 3]
The court can then order the claimant to put up a financial guarantee—such as paying cash into court, providing a bank guarantee, or lodging a bond—before they are allowed to proceed with the lawsuit. 1]

How the Process Works
To successfully get a Security for Costs order, the defendant must pass a strict legal framework governed by Part 25 of the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR): 1, 2]

1. Proving the "Grounds" (The Gateways)
A defendant cannot get this order simply because they want one. They must prove at least one specific condition applies to the claimant, such as: 1, 2, 3]
Insolvency/Impecuniosity: The claimant is a company, and there is clear evidence it will not have the funds to pay the defendant's costs if it loses. 1, 2]
Outside the Jurisdiction: The claimant lives or is based outside of the UK (making it incredibly hard and expensive to enforce a debt against them later). 1, 2]
Asset Hiding/Evasion: The claimant has changed their address or moved their assets around specifically to avoid paying up if they lose. src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/1CGMmdWt-JY?start=95" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen> 1]
Nominal Claimant: The person suing is just a front or a "nominal" claimant suing for someone else's financial benefit. src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/1CGMmdWt-JY?start=95" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen> 1]

2. The Court’s Discretion
Even if a ground is met, the judge will only grant the order if it is "just to do so". The court carefully balances protecting the defendant with ensuring they do not "stifle" a genuine claim. If an individual claimant is poor but has a great case, courts are highly reluctant to block them from justice unless there is evidence of dishonesty or bad faith. 1, 2, 3]

3. The Consequence of Failing to Comply
If the court orders the claimant to lodge the bond or cash by a certain deadline and they fail to do so, the lawsuit is stayed (paused) or struck out entirely. The case is effectively dead in the water. 1, 2]

Who Actually Uses This?
While your joke about "people who count" hits on a tactical truth—large corporations, wealthy individuals, and institutional defendants use this heavily to defend against speculative lawsuits—any defendant can technically apply for it if the grounds are met. It is widely considered one of the most powerful tactical weapons a defendant has to shut down risky or vexatious claims early. 1, 2, 3]
If you are looking into a specific legal scenario, let me know:
Is the claimant an individual or a limited company?
Are they based in the UK or abroad?
Has a formal claim already been issued in court? 1, 2, 3]
I can give you more details on how a court might view the situation.

Hopefully enough that he won't feel deterred from taking action here for fear of costs.

Yes, I remember it well. Which means we already know he's not afraid of Rupert Murdoch, an odious man in his own right, and we can be confident Farage will take similar steps this time if the ST have told any porkies. As I said, entertaining!

TopPocketFind · 06/07/2026 11:18

Farage knows the rules and if all is above board , he shouldn't mind the scrutiny.

Farage is now making out it’s an establishment plot and he’s going to sue the Sunday times (like last time Nige? Oh no you didn’t did you - just blamed the Russians 🙄)

That'll be entertaining!

He would stand more chance of winning if they had said "he's not a grifter who will do anything for cash", the best defence against libel, the comment was true and even if it was libelous the person doesn't have a reputation that could be damaged.

I think most on this thread realise that wot Nige sez and wot Nige duz are two very different beasts.

But it's fun watching Nige find out in real time.

Up till now, it's all been "NIgel says" that the media burns into the public imagination. Very little (if anything) on the follow up "doing" bit.

But now they seem rather unreasonably fixated on what Nigel done, and are less interested in what he says.

Ah, the Donald Trump playbook. Let me guess £10,000,000,000 ?

Let's hope it goes as well.

It was hilarious to see Jenrick label The Times as a Labour supporting media outlet. What planet are they on?

First trump is a moron but Biden couldn’t walk and talk at the same time. His wife and close people kept him away from everyone. You think he was running the country?

What's your point? Mine was that anyone watching what's happening in the US, including the blatant corruption, should be wary of Farage.

Yours I guess is just to spew illogical and specious right wing talking points even when not germane to the conversation?

Ooops. Apologies. I should have checked.

Theolittle · 06/07/2026 08:11

The bigot comment from 16 years ago, was a private remark made following a difficult and stressful exchange, and an apology was made immediately. I’m sure if you could record all the private comments from politicians of all ilks you’d hear allsorts when they’re letting off steam, same as most human beings.

Sorry but listening to the electorate and doing what they say would be sure downfall for the UK

  1. the electorate are not of one opinion - on any subject - at either platitude level or the complex detail
  2. most of the electorate want better services but everyone thinks a different section of the electorate should pay for it
  3. only about 5% have any inkling about bond markets

No you don’t blindly listen to the electorate and do what they want 🙄

you listen to what they are saying and convince them that what you are suggesting is the right path. You don’t just tell them they’re all bigots and crack on

Labour/trump/tories - it’s all just a distraction

reform have benefitted from discontent and protest votes. We now from the Brexit vote that people don’t always do a lot of research before voting and go for gut. Calling people stupid or racist doesn’t make them engage with the issues and makes people feel set apart from the political parties. Remember Gordon Brown and the dreadful woman? It all started then and a lot of the electorate don’t feel listened to.

the answer isn’t reform or Nigel Farage - the answer is for the main parties to open their ears and win the arguments

Agree 100% - as do a large number of folk where I live and work. Mostly professionals. It's astonishing how presumptuous some people are, about the intelligence and demographic of many people supporting Reform. Uncontrolled immigration is the #1 issue, along with the economy.

“Uncontrolled immigration “ - the vast majority of immigrants are “controlled”. The Boris wave of nearly 2 million over 2 years was because businesses needed the workers, and to grow the economy. The UK needed this. Difference now is that they’re predominantly black and brown immigrants rather than white european immigrants which does have its challenges.
