Vaping while pushing pram?

Clover96 · 06/05/2026 16:38

My baby is 7 days old today, first baby so everything is still new and my emotions a bit up and down.

Am I being overly cautious / unreasonable about this though, because I really don't see how I am.

Would you find it acceptable to take baby out in the pram and have a vape at the same time? They have the opinion that it's fine because you wouldn't be directly blowing it in their face or in their direction, there's "things like car fumes too", and there's no way they'd want to go on hour walk with baby without the vape.

Just asked my teen what low frequency means and he asked why, whos wilding at you, then I asked what wilding means and he said low frequency people do it a lot when they're trying to look like they've got a vibe.

I need a lie down.

I don’t think abstaining while you’re around children is a bad thing. I wouldn’t smoke or vape around mine, but all the talk of low frequency, uneducated, low class, chavvy blah blah blah just reeks of smug superiority. Congratulations for being so middle class and clever, is that what you need to hear?

FYI people can have vices and still be intelligent, decent people. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I’d judge the successful yuppy wino or coke addict parents just as much as those vaping around children.

Do you know anything about nicotine addiction? Saying ‘so it’s an addiction’ isn’t imparting wisdom. Of course it is!! Nicotine is the fifth most addictive drug in the world. Why judge people for trying to escape the misery of this addiction?!
@SerenaCat93 thank you for calling out the judgmental, uneducated people on this thread! Agree with everything you’re saying.

perfectly well educated thanks.

vaping is addictive as evidenced in the OP. I’m not imparting wisdom - I’m sharing my views.

for those who like to vape. Go for it! If you want to breathe that on your babies - go for it.

I just wouldn’t do that.

What does low frequency mean in this context?

Selfish, toxic, zero accountability energy.

Yes of course smoking is worse but doing either whilst pushing a pram just looks low frequency. It suggests someone who has neither the common sense or pride in themselves to abstain from a bad habit around a small child. It’s not superiority it’s knowing what’s decent and not acceptable.

"low frequency" 😂

This thread has inspired me to finish the bingo card I've been working on ...

So different to the 2013 threads where vaping was actually saving people from smoking
people are so much less tolerant to it for some reason. I was vaping custard flavours even then

People hear the word vape and their braincell escapes through their arse.

No they’re really not ‘equally bad’. One is much worse. But don’t let science get in the way of you feeling superior.

It smells horrible and it’s horrible having it blown in your face.

I think the dummy reference is because some people need to have it in the mouths a lot. Like they rely on it. Like in the OP - the person can’t go an hour without it. So it’s an addiction.

Each to their own - but anyone vaping or smoking around children are equally as bad. It just looks rough, remember Vicky Pollard from Little Britain? It screams uneducated and just generally low frequency energy.

My 6-year-old has never touched my vape other than to pass it to me. He’s never copied the action of vaping, he literally could not be less interested. Kids grow up to see the things their parents do as deeply uncool. By time their old enough to be alone long enough to procure a vape from somewhere and have a puff, they won’t be interested, because their parents have already shattered the mystery and made it far less exciting than it would be for the kids whose parents bang on about how awful it is. Those are the kids who are going to take up vaping at 12 🤣

I’m not sure there’s any evidence that demystifying vapes will make children less likely to vape. Children of smokers are 3-4x more likely to smoke, so it’s not the children of parents who never smoke who are so desperately tempted by the banned cigarettes, while the children of smokers just see it as really uncool because their parents do it.

PurpleThistle7 · 07/05/2026 08:20

At my 9 year old son’s football game last weekend, a handful of the opposing parents spent the entire game vaping on the sideline and I hated it. I think it’s gross to do that around kids. My daughter and I both have asthma and she actually reacts worse to vaping nearby than cigarettes so I hate any child being around that poison. Shes in high school so obviously walks through a cloud of it twice a day and needs to bring her inhaler to school now.

Anyway, I think it’s gross and wouldn’t allow it but I actually think it’s worse and worse the older the child gets as they’ll start normalising it.

PollyBell · 07/05/2026 08:09

Well unless it is your baby it doesn't really matter what you think to be perfectly honest so not sure your emotions are relevant

I think cigarettes and vapes are revolting personally but you cant do anything about other people doing it

plodding6 · 07/05/2026 08:08

SouthernNights59 · 07/05/2026 07:03

It's pathetic isn't it. My ex recently drove me home from hospital an hour away and if it wasn't for the fact that I occasionally looked in his direction and saw the vape I wouldn't have even noticed that he was vaping.

As a long term smoker who has asthma I am more than happy to see him vaping btw.

So many pearl clutching judgemental twits on MN, not reflected in real life in my experience.

Not to mention the fact that these gross, chavvy, tacky, skanky vapes have actually helped many smokers to quit cigarettes. I’m sure the next MN bingo comment will be ‘well they are worse for you than fags anyway’. I will choose to believe the NHS guidance that says they are much safer and therefore doing good things for smokers health rather than a load of judgey mums on the internet who will use anything to try and feel superior.

I do think there should always have been better restrictions on them. Prescription only perhaps to stop kids who have never smoked picking it up as a standalone habit. But that’s for health reasons not because im sad enough to go about judging the way it makes people look.

Seymorbutts · 07/05/2026 08:05

PencilsInSpace · 06/05/2026 19:57

Yes it is.

It's still not great to vape around babies and children because they do copy adult behaviour. While that's not such an issue with a newborn, if he's vaping around the baby now, there is unlikely to be a point when he would stop.

Would he consider snus or pouches for when he's around the baby? That removes (almost) all the behavioural cues.

Not one single person on here is 'losing their shit.' 🙄 Just stating that vaping is grim, and people look like toddlers sucking dummies when they are sucking on their vape.

.

Edited

You just totally proved @LiviaDrusillaAugusta ’s point 🤣🤣
No one in real life has ever described vaping like a toddler sucking on its dummy! That’s ridiculous, snobby, and judgemental, especially towards the people who’ve tried hard to give up smoking and have managed to switch to vaping. Describing it as ‘grim’ just doesn’t make any sense. Honestly I think MN is the most stuck-up place on the internet sometimes

SouthernNights59 · 07/05/2026 07:03

plodding6 · 06/05/2026 23:10

Exactly this. It is literally MN bingo every time someone starts a vaping thread and it always boils down to what it looks like (adult dummies) and how chavvy/skanky/tacky it is. Pure judgement and superiority rather than genuine health concerns.

NHS states that ‘second hand vaping’ is a myth so this wouldn’t worry me too much if it were outdoors.

Clearly vaping is not a good habit to pick up but it’s very amusing to see how many people fall over themselves to be so condescending and rude about it.

PencilsInSpace · 06/05/2026 20:18

Only 5% of vapers have never smoked. It's surprising that you only know vapers from this tiny group.

It probably depends on your age. 1 in 7 young people (18-24) who have never smoked vape regularly. If that poster is younger she may know a lot of vapers who have never smoked, and may not know many people who ever smoked, regardless of whether they now use vapes or not, as smoking is less common in that age group.
