To ask what you would think of a colleague posting on social media?

I have lost quite a lot of weight and started running. I initially started posting about running about a month ago on social media as a way to keep me accountable, but it’s sort of taken off and I’ve gained 1200 followers in a month. I’m really enjoying posting and sharing, and I’ve got quite a little community going with other women.

But I’m a little bit worried about my colleagues finding out. Not because I’m embarrassed of what I’ve posted (it’s mainly just photos or short videos), but because I feel like it’s quite cringeworthy until you hit a decent amount of followers. So what would you think if you found out about your colleague doing this?

YABU - shut it down, you’re an adult and don’t need to post.

YANBU - keep posting, it’s great.

It depends on the tone of the content I think.

If it is a bit "Hi guuuyyyssssss!! Welcome back to chaaaanel ...." then yeah cringe

If it is more "checking in. Ran x miles, pace ok-ish. Avoided biscuits. It's a good day! Here's some ducklings I ran past earlier.... pleased to report they didnt overtake me" then that is less cringe if you see what I mean

@LiviaDrusillaAugusta

People are interpreting an eye roll to be aggressive - to me it’s not. There is no malice in following someone and then unfollowing if their posts go down a different direction that isn’t interesting to the person previously following them.

It is a question of interpretation. I agree that there’s nothing wrong with not following someone but I do think an eye roll is dismissive and sneery.

NeelyOHara · 07/05/2026 09:14

Is this just a humble brag thread?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 07/05/2026 08:59

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/05/2026 08:42

Maybe I was aggressive in my tone and if I was I apologise.

But I stand by what I said: its uniquely mean spirited to sneer at someone who has screwed up all their courage to post about something which means a great deal to them. Particularly if they are literally canvassing views on this board as to what other people will think. And particularly if its something entirely benign.

If, in response to this, a person types s post to the effect of: “its a bit boring and cringe and I would be rolling my eyes” it can’t come from a kind or supportive place. You are knowingly choosing to let someone who is insecure know that you think their content is shit/cringe/dull or whatever. It’s completely without purpose other than to subtly convey your superiority. Why wouldn’t you just keep it to yourself if you genuinely couldn’t be bothered to read it?

I will own that I may have used intemperate language but you ought to be able to own that your motive in telling this poster how “eye-rolling” she is was to put her down.

I appreciate your comments about the tone,

The OP asked So what would you think if you found out about your colleague doing this?

Not ‘what do you think about me doing this’

i was answering the question literally.

It wasn’t to put anyone down personally, and I apologise to the OP if it came across like that. I was talking generally.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 07/05/2026 07:53

Oh so her post wasn’t aggressive? I posted then I clarified but for some reason she went off on one, accusing me of jealously and being spiteful. A couple of PP even pointed out that I hadnt done anything wrong. I did not post anything spiteful - and yet here we are 🤣🤣

ACIGC · 07/05/2026 08:04

To be honest I find posts about people’s running quite tiresome and egotistical but that is the same whether they’re colleagues or not. If I’m not that bothered about them, I’ll just unfollow. If it’s an actual friend and I’m bothered about their other posts then I’ll just scroll past the latest strava screengrab.

AskNotForWhomTheBellCurves · 07/05/2026 08:02

If a normal person I knew in real life had 1200 followers I'd think that was a lot! It would only be cringe if you were always going on about it at work and acting like you were some big name influencer, but you're clearly not doing that.

For heaven’s sake, @LiviaDrusillaAugusta, it’s overwhelmingly evident from all of your posts, as well as your frequent declarations that you loathe all the world apart from ten people, that you are an unusually cantankerous human being.

@Thepeopleversuswork is s generally well-disposed poster who often gives generous, sane advice.

I’ll let you take a wild guess who is coming across across as unpleasant here.

You know that it’s not a literal eye rolling, right? How is that performative?

But you carry on projecting and coming back at me. Something of a Mean Girl yourself really 🤣

I do understand this but thanks for taking the time to educate me. The “performative” part is feeling the need to tell strangers on the internet that you are bored and uninterested in someone’s hobby.

The mean element is feeling the need to dump this on someone who is preoccupied and self conscious and is seeking advice. All you will achieve is to dump on someone else’s self esteem by imparting to everyone how “bored” you are.

You know this full well so I don’t know why I am bothering to explain it.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 07/05/2026 07:19

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/05/2026 06:13

“Lack of interest” doesn’t prompt people to performatively “roll their eyes” and tell randoms on the internet how uninterested you are. If you are genuinely uninterested you don’t go to the trouble of signaling that you find it boring, you just move on.

People who talk about “eye rolling” on here are trying to convey, Mean Girls style, that they are so over it, because it actually makes them uncomfortable.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/05/2026 22:55

Why is eye rolling spiteful and mean? The person doesn’t see it, it’s just a gesture to indicate lack of interest and then move on.

If you think that is spiteful, aggressive or mean, then I imagine you are very hard work.

Being spiteful would be posting negative things on the posts and also screenshotting and sending them on to people to take the piss.

i wouldn’t do that just because I wasn’t interested in the content

LOL.

If we are talking about people being aggressive I would say “rolling your eyes” at someone enjoying a healthy hobby is about as aggressive as it gets. Spiteful and mean.

I’m not “into other people’s journeys” (whatever that means), I just have enough self awareness to know that if you are irritated by someone talking on social media about doing something completely benign its a you problem not a them problem.

Because @LiviaDrusillaAugusta 's a mean girl (or boy).

I think what you're doing is great! I used to run and stopped years ago after breaking my toe. If I lost weight I'd try it again, and I'd find your posts inspiring.

Well apparently you struggle with comprehension. Please read my follow up comment.

If your content is open to the public (not just friends) I'd assume it was a hobby and be impressed, if I saw it, but not interested enough to follow you

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/05/2026 20:40

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/05/2026 19:27

What is your issue exactly. I would roll my eyes and unfollow as I’m not into people’s journeys - I don’t care if people post about it, I am just not into it. Why would it be jealousy?

You and another poster on this thread have definite issues with aggression - you should probably get that looked into as it can’t be healthy for you.

If you get enough followers, you’ll earn enough to be able to stop work anyway.

SlayTheJAway · 06/05/2026 19:43

You could block people from following you. My husband has a decent sized account but he doesn’t tell colleagues and blocks them so they don’t find him. He enjoys doing it but doesn’t really talk about it in real life.

HolyMoly24 · 06/05/2026 19:39

I have two friends currently trying out becoming parenting/cleaning content creators on social media. I just think good for them.

I don’t think colleagues will care all that much, especially as it’s about a popular hobby.

OrlandointheWilderness · 06/05/2026 19:33

Tbh I would probably follow you! I love running and people’s journeys into it as I’m not your scary classic ‘pops out a 10K in half an hour before yoga and brunch’ type 😂 you are popular for posting something real - something that takes effort and honesty to build a following about. I would judge you if you were a plastic clothes horse tbh but not for this.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/05/2026 19:28

sundaysurfing · 06/05/2026 15:25

This is a standard feeling that people get when they are on their content creation journey and you will get some haters obviously because their worst fear is being seen for who they are online. This is decision you have to make. Do you care more about feeling cringe around your colleagues or do you want to take your content creation journey any more seriously?

Do you really think people who aren’t interested are ‘haters’? How odd.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/05/2026 19:27

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/05/2026 15:23

Why? Are you jealous someone else is getting more attention than you?

Unless its illegal, embarrassing or against company rules I wouldn’t give a flying fuck what people thought of my posts on social media. Anyone who “eye-rolls” over someone’s harmless, healthy hobby is a mean-spirited dick not worth being friends with.

Your colleagues are literally just some people you happen to work with and it doesn't matter two hoots what they think of you posting about running on social media. You're allowed to have a life outside work, you know.

They're unlikely to care and are not, in a million years, going to think 'Oh look, there's so-and-so talking about running, how cringe, she's only got 1,200 followers'. Even if you had 12 followers they still wouldn't care. It's fine.

nailed it
