To ask what you would think of a colleague posting on social media?

I have lost quite a lot of weight and started running. I initially started posting about running about a month ago on social media as a way to keep me accountable, but it’s sort of taken off and I’ve gained 1200 followers in a month. I’m really enjoying posting and sharing, and I’ve got quite a little community going with other women.

But I’m a little bit worried about my colleagues finding out. Not because I’m embarrassed of what I’ve posted (it’s mainly just photos or short videos), but because I feel like it’s quite cringeworthy until you hit a decent amount of followers. So what would you think if you found out about your colleague doing this?

YABU - shut it down, you’re an adult and don’t need to post.

YANBU - keep posting, it’s great.

Some of my colleagues and ex colleagues post a lot. I barely notice it but occasionally see things and think oh, they post.

That’s pretty much it. I don’t care. They’re not doing anything particularly impressive or despicable, just living. It has no impact on our working life.

Your colleagues won’t care, don’t worry about it.

Mermaidsarereal · 10/05/2026 19:08

Honestly don’t worry about it! I have like 300 followers on TikTok and am always posting videos of things I’ve made, crafts, baking, sets of nails that I’ve done (recently enrolled on a gel nails course so am practicing lots!) as long as the content isn’t offensive who cares what anyone else thinks!

ClovisWrites · 08/05/2026 22:05

There’s part of my that thinks:
”You do what makes you happy, you shouldn’t worry about what others may think. People are too quick to sneer.”
Theres another part of me that thinks:
”I know several people personally, relatives or schools mums I know, who regularly post videos to Instagram and have c. 500 to 2,000 followers… some do craft stuff and some actually do running videos… and they all looks totally tragic, like they’re think they’re famous, and I often wonder why their husbands or closer friends don’t have a word with them.”
I think it really depends on your honest motivation for doing it. If you’re building a community of people with a shared interest, then great. If deep down you like the attention and fancy yourself as being an influencer… well the world’s got enough of that crap.

twinmummystarz · 08/05/2026 13:53

You are doing something amazing - changing your life for the better. Keep posting and ignore the haters! x

Not cringeworthy at all, not to do with the company, if I saw as your colleague I’d think - go you!

I agree! Go forth, enjoy and inspire!

A humble brag… about my 56 minute 6k run yesterday?🤣

OP I couldn’t even run 6k so don’t put yourself down. Everyone has to start somewhere, keep going and keep posting!!!

TheGreatDownandOut · 08/05/2026 08:52

One of my colleagues does this. She’s nearly 50, is unbelievably fit and regularly competes in fitness competitions. I love cheering her on, I think she’s an inspiration. Keep doing it OP. I say this as someone who never posts anything on social media but I love seeing this type of content. You may inspire some of them!

Really? This is about running. I had a colleague that had a Facebook page of incredibly racist views backed up by ill informed hogwash and I judged the shit out of him.

this is a hobby and I would either follow or not based on whether I was interested in the hobby. I think it depends on the social media platform. I think LinkedIn and running may be a bit misplaced but Instagram or something go ahead.

Yes my point was that if I was following the colleague already (assuming they are not also a very close friend) and they started posting a lot about something I wasn’t interested in I would unfollow. Not out of malice or jealousy or whatever but because it’s not my thing 🤷‍♀️

Agapornis · 08/05/2026 07:53

You could always make your profile private.

But if you don't, re "it’s quite cringeworthy until you hit a decent amount of followers" - even the most famous (b)influencers started at zero. I suppose you could spend idiot money on getting 5k fake bot followers...

Igmum · 08/05/2026 07:49

Why shouldn’t my colleagues post about running? I’m not a runner but I’d be mildly impressed by this. Good luck

Macinae · 08/05/2026 07:34

AirborneElephant · 06/05/2026 13:32

Just be very mindful what you start posting. It may be just about running now, but our personal views do start leaking through. People will follow you more if they can start building a picture of who you are as a person - your lifestyle, family, habits, viewpoints. But that also exposes all of that both to the public and also to all future employers. Not necessarily a bad thing, just don’t ever drop your guard and never put anything out there you wouldn’t be happy to see on the front page of the news or on your boss’ desk.

This is a very important point.

Hellometime · 08/05/2026 07:34

I’d ask yourself why do you care though?
It’s your hobby and you are finding it helpful and enjoyable. It’s not boring anymore- if they don’t like running they don’t follow you.
I wouldn’t mention it to colleagues unless they were interested in running but if one came across it then it’s just your hobby. Our team have a wide range of hobbies.
I have over 15,000 followers as a middle aged woman. I’ve never specifically told colleagues but if one came across it I wouldn’t mind. What I post isn’t controversial or offensive. It’s built into a little community and I enjoy it if I didn’t I’d stop.

Would your work colleagues even know how many followers you have?
Is that genuinely a thing that adults look at?

Chickadee001 · 08/05/2026 05:46

Bravo well done for achieving it, not cringeworthy at all keep going!!

PrincessFairyWren · 08/05/2026 00:47

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/05/2026 12:34

If I was a colleague and was on your social media already, I would roll my eyes and unfollow. Also might mention to other colleagues.

But you do your thing if it helps - does it matter what people think?

One of my colleagues has 12,000 followers on Instagram. I’m really pleased for her!

Banannanana · 08/05/2026 00:08

I wouldn’t care that much about someone else’s life to give a second thought to what they were posting.

Respectfully, you aren’t that important.

Doone22 · 07/05/2026 21:49

It's fine. It's not onlyfans after all. Stop worrying.

TheCraftySquid · 07/05/2026 20:56

Lots of people in my company have fairly successful social accounts. Most post about their hobbies or holidays. One lady post about her religion. Everyone loves it and follows each other. There’s no judgement but really good lunch room chats take place off the back of posts. I think it’s a great thing to do.

ItsameLuigi · 07/05/2026 19:14

I'd probably just unfollow since that isn't the sorta stuff I'm interested in seeing, and then never think about it again! Not in a mean way, but like I wouldn't find it cringe.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 07/05/2026 18:31

If your not comfortable with this just block them. I wouldn't give them a second thought.

Then get on with becoming fitter, healthier and happier.

bryceQ · 07/05/2026 18:30

Would think absolutely nothing negative. Would just say cool good for you!

Dolphin78 · 07/05/2026 18:29

If you were my colleague I’d just be delighted for you and follow your successful journey! Im
sure the majority are cheering you on. Go you!

@LiviaDrusillaAugusta

People are interpreting an eye roll to be aggressive - to me it’s not. There is no malice in following someone and then unfollowing if their posts go down a different direction that isn’t interesting to the person previously following them.

It is a question of interpretation. I agree that there’s nothing wrong with not following someone but I do think an eye roll is dismissive and sneery.

That’s your opinion. Not sure why you would assume you know my intentions better than me but okay
