To think you need to clean for “guests”

We have family visiting tomorrow for lunch. A planned meal with about 15 people. We see them regularly but not often at home.

In the interests of full disclosure we have a cleaner who does 3 hours once a week. I think in addition we need to:
> Deep clean the kitchen
> Mop the floor of the whole downstairs
> Deep clean downstairs toilet
> Remove all clutter from downstairs
> Wipe all downstairs surfaces
> Empty downstairs bins
> Hoover upstairs
> Deep clean upstairs bathroom

This is the minimum. I would actually do more if time permitted.

DH thinks it is WAY too much and would probably just wipe down the kitchen and spray some air freshener in the bathrooms. AIBU?

A place that is throughly cleaned smells completely different to somewhere that has had a quick once over with a hoover.

It just helps with the freshness.

It only smells different if you spray air freshener (or similar) around. hoovering behind the sofa is not going to make a blind bit of difference.

Denim4ever · 03/05/2026 22:15

If you have a regular cleaner or regularly clean yourselves you never need to 'deep clean'.

If you want to do a bit of cleaning and tidying before guests that's great but 'deep clean' is not the terminology

Gwenhwyfar · 03/05/2026 22:14

"if it's good enough for me and my family, why should I do any more for others? "

Because we're used to our own mess.
In this case, I don't think Op needs to do anything, but in general people are more grossed out by others' dirt than their own.

When I visit people I’m interested in spending time with them
I hope my guests are like you @Scoreagoal but I do notice if I’m in someone’s house and the bathroom is a bit… used. I want them to not find fault and I can’t relax if I know no one has wiped the toilet down etc

Fortunately most people are not as judgy as you.

I'd be very disappointd if i was paying a cleaner and needed to do all that extra cleaning 2 days later!

The thing is, I don’t expect her to deep clean anything in that time. I prefer her to whizz through the whole house and make the beds, she does a little tidy of the kids rooms and makes the house feel nice. She mops the floors but doesn’t focus on any area. It’s a nice to have rather than a ‘real’ clean.

Yes I think so. Would you want to put a sanitary towel in a full bin? Ok so maybe it wouldn’t be ‘full’ but I would make sure it was empty so they didn’t feel uncomfortable.

So those of us living in flats are automatically inhospitable? As long as the bins don't smell I don't see what the problem is...

Pistachiocake · 03/05/2026 22:12

I wouldn't do any special cleaning for guests-if it's good enough for me and my family, why should I do any more for others? Obviously I would get in any special drinks/foods they need for religious/allergy needs, and to show I care about what they like, but why should I need to do any special cleaning (exceptions if someone is especially vulnerable/things need to moved to suit their mobility needs).

saraclara · 03/05/2026 22:12

Id have added wiping down the skirting boards

Yep, they'll definitely be getting down on their knees to check the skirting boards, rather than chatting and generally socialising. 🙄

Gwenhwyfar · 03/05/2026 22:11

CleanHouseForNow · 03/05/2026 22:06

@OnTheBoardwalk shit I don’t change the towels. I am going to do this going forward runs to the bathrooms to throw the old ones in the wash.

Oh dear. It's not necessary unless the hand towel is really dirty or damp and it was just a suggestion.

Gealach · 03/05/2026 22:11

Miranda65 · 03/05/2026 22:09

But your guests won't be pulling out the sofas, so doing that to Hoover is pointless!

A place that is throughly cleaned smells completely different to somewhere that has had a quick once over with a hoover.

It just helps with the freshness.

saraclara · 03/05/2026 22:10

CleanHouseForNow · 03/05/2026 21:33

How deep is the deep clean? I’m on my knees cleaning the bathroom floor tiles.

I also pull the sofas out to hoover.

And this is family that you have visiting?

Two or three times a year I have that number of family members here. I focus more on the catering than cleaning. And I can guarantee that my family members will be far too busy enjoying each others company to notice a hair in the sink (or any other imperfection, frankly).

You have a cleaner. It's not going to be gross. The kitchen and bathroom/toilets need checking over, and if your children have strewn things around, they'll need tidying. Then a quick hoover, and you should be done.

flagpolesitta · 03/05/2026 22:10

Tbh I feel like it’s a good way to get the ‘deep clean’ houses need evey so often done and out the way. Having visitors is great motivation.

CleanHouseForNow · 03/05/2026 22:10

Gwenhwyfar · 03/05/2026 21:49

As for the bins, I live in a flat so I can only take them out on bin day.
Are you saying that visitors expect bins to be empty?

Yes I think so. Would you want to put a sanitary towel in a full bin? Ok so maybe it wouldn’t be ‘full’ but I would make sure it was empty so they didn’t feel uncomfortable.

YANBU

A meal for 15 people is quite a lot in your home and you want ti feel like you can be proud of it

CleanHouseForNow · 03/05/2026 22:06

Gwenhwyfar · 03/05/2026 21:47

If I had guests coming today I wouldn't do anything except double check the toilet and sink because the place is already quite clean (as is yours). I'd maybe hide my used towels and put a clean hand towel in the bathroom.

If they were staying overnight, the bathroom would get a more thorough clean because they'd be using the shower, maybe wanting to leave their night clothes on the floor, but just for lunch, no there would be no need for such a deep clean.

@OnTheBoardwalk shit I don’t change the towels. I am going to do this going forward runs to the bathrooms to throw the old ones in the wash.

What do you mean "deep clean"? The loo is either clean or it isn't. And the kitchen is probably fine already - I'm assuming you're not actually planning to eat your lunch off the floor. Just do a bit of tidying up, open windows, get rid of junk etc is probably sufficient. They're coming to see you, not your house.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 03/05/2026 22:05

I have someone come in weekly. I do all the downstairs stuff before they come in. Not upstairs because they don't go up there.

youalright · 03/05/2026 22:03

I agree with you i do the same before guests. Even if someone messages out of the blue to come round what I can get done in 15 minutes is nothing short of spectacular and more then I've usually done all week 🤣🤣

FunMustard · 03/05/2026 22:03

I would make sure the toilets are clean, the surfaces everywhere are clean and as uncluttered as I can make them. I'd hoover and mop where needed.

Am I fuck doing a deep clean of the goddamn floor tiles that no one is going to look at.

I hope my guests are like you @Scoreagoal but I do notice if I’m in someone’s house and the bathroom is a bit… used. I want them to not find fault and I can’t relax if I know no one has wiped the toilet down etc

again….I’m no domestic goddess - I do what I need to around the house but am not overly house proud.

so if the toilet is looking a bit minging at any time - I chuck some bleach down and give it a quick scrub - literally take 5 mins.

i don’t ‘do it for guests’ - just for general hygiene! As and when.

my house is ok for me and my family and if anyone else turns up - so be it.

It’s not pristine or a show home - just ‘normal’

no cleaner here - just normal cleaning as and when.

don’t overthink it - am sure it is fine and really if people have nothing better to do than judge your cleaning - it says far more about them than you!!!

Silverbirchleaf · 03/05/2026 22:00

Deep clean the kitchen - definitely surfaces, but not inside every cupboard. Maybe also fridge also.
> Mop the floor of the whole downstairs - yes
> Deep clean downstairs toilet - yes
> Remove all clutter from downstairs - within reason. As long as rooms are clean and tidy
> Wipe all downstairs surfaces - yes
> Empty downstairs bins - yes, if nearly full
> Hoover upstairs - hallways
> Deep clean upstairs bathroom. - clean and tidy

But way are you leaving the cleaning for tomorrow. Couldn’t most have been done today, with last minute hoovering and surface wiping being done tomorrow?

PollyBell · 03/05/2026 22:00

No way would we do all this if you want to personally fine you do it yourself

CoyGoldenKoi · 03/05/2026 21:59

Scoreagoal · 03/05/2026 21:34

When I visit people I’m interested in spending time with them - not interested in inspecting the state of their kitchen or how beautifully clean the floors toilet is.

I’m secure enough that if my friends and family visit they are here to see me - not inspect my cleanliness . I don’t need to clean like a madman to prove my worth.

normal standards of cleanliness - yes - but going mad cleaning and totally overboard as if the king is visiting - absolutely not.

What she said, 100%.

I live in a reasonable state of cleanliness all the time. What's good enough for me is good enough for any other human. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be ok for me either.

I also welcome guests dropping by at short notice - I'm actually really surprised how many people clean (at all, never mind deep clean) for guests.

Are your family so judgemental that this is really necessary?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/05/2026 21:58

I’d just hoover, mop, ensure kitchen and bathroom and living dining rooms are clean and tidy. And toilet duck the toilet.
