I deleted my previous account (due to poor mental health) but I’m back.

Solidarity with the Jewish community.

Much love to you all.

I will always support you.

You, however, seem to have come on this thread to performatively declare that public support for Jews is performative and that Jews aren't being oppressed.

It does make one wonder quite why somebody would invest so much time, energy and anger in doing that if they simply disagreed.

A hissy fit? Nice try, but I'm quite calm.

It's not me who's written posts so intemperately aggressive that they needed to be deleted.

Oh lord. Do you have a “black lives matter” t-shirt too?

Why be so aggressive?

I'm half German. I support Jewish people.

I do not support genocide and I am pro Palestine as I hope ye all are too.

What does the second part of your post have to do with the first? Or the topic of the thread?

BunfightBetty · 05/05/2026 10:46

if you think wearing a pin is doing anything beyond being self serving your own image then crack on.

I know my own motivations better than you, thank you.

The point is you think it's performative, whereas others don't. You having an opinion is just that - an opinion. It's not a fact.

If you feel you doing it would be performative, then you're quite right to not do it. However, it's quite arrogant to assume this would be the case for others.

Oh geez 🙄. How is this difficult for you to comprehend?

I don’t like performative actions. The examples I gave were not solely about Judaism, so don’t even start with the “you have an objection to people posting in support of Jewish people”

if you think wearing a pin is doing anything beyond being self serving your own image then crack on.

I also meant to say that I was trying to understand your motivation, rather than jump to a conclusion and assume I knew your motivations better than you (that would be arrogant, wouldn't it?). Not sure why you felt the need to defend and attack.

Ok.

Just so I can understand - what is your objection to people posting in support of Jewish people, or wearing a badge to show support?

Is there something you would prefer people to do instead? Or would you rather people do nothing?

It's certainly less performative then all those people now wearing a keffiyah.

Ain’t that the truth!

Why did you feel the need to qualify your statement? Why did you feel the need to add that you're pro Palestine (whatever that means)?

No one "supports genocide". Hth.
Im anti genocide, who isnt? What haa that got to do with your supposed support of jewish people?

Performative suggests it's just an empty gesture - like wearing a keffiya as a fashion item - and it's not.

Obviously, the example of the nazis is extrene - I'm not suggesting Jews are being stripped of their assets and loaded onto cattle cars to Treblinka. But to suggest that because it's not "that bad", that it's not happening, that Jews aren't being oppressed could be a chapter in "Jews Dont Count"

Because that comparison is the same 🙄.

Jewih people are not being systematically marked by being forced to wear a pin. So a non-Jew choosing to wear the symbol isn’t disrupting a system of oppression.

Imagine if during Nazi times everyone would have decided to have worn the star of david Jews were forced to have worn....
Someone willingly exposing themselves to the antisemtiism Jews face daily as a sign of solidarity is more than performative.

Absolutely - it would be so powerful.

If your ‘action’ doesn’t actually affect anything outside your own image, it’s performative—no matter how many people join in

But that's what I'm saying. If enough people join in, then it could affect things.

It's not that the numbers matter per se. It's what the numbers achieve. The way that numbers can sometimes achieve a shift - a movement of the Overton window, even.

It's the very opposite of performative when that happens.

The problem with saying this or that is 'performative' is that it can sound a bit sneery, and that potentially stops people doing things that could move the needle.

Might some people do things 'performatively' - well, perhaps. You always get a bit of that, don't you? Whether it's wearing a poppy, a red ribbon, a a keffiyeh. But many others will genuinely be trying to change things. When they start doing something, nothing has changed yet - it could look performative. But later things could change. I'd far rather people try.

It’s done to appease conscience rather than to create substantive, systemic change.

Well, I wonder about that.

Would the ability to create substantive, systemic change not depend on how many people started wearing them? What prominence they were given, if it was a movement that was reported on, debated, got a high profile, grew...

The marches have had an impact, haven't they? They've contributed to the rise in antisemitism and legitimised antisemitic views, while leaving Jewish people more fearful. Perhaps an attempt to redress the balance could go some way to doing that. I'd like to think so, at any rate.

Perhaps a badge wouldn't be the thing that would do it, but something needs to happen to turn this shit around.

I think it's important to add that an estimated 70 - 80, 000 Jewish refugees arrived in GB prior to the start of WW2 in 1939; and a further estimated 10,000 arrived during the war.

I agree that anti-Semitism was a factor in the decision to stop refugees. But it wasn't the only one. Once the war began, the Government's view was that arrivals from a Nazi-occupied country were potential spies or enemies. There was also grave concern as to whether there would be sufficient future food supplies to feed the existing population and my Grandparents lived through rationing and shortages of various food types throughout the war. The future food supply concern was such that the government issued a pamphlet to pet owners at the beginning of the war advising them to euthanise their pets as feeding them would become unsustainable. An estimated 750,000 cats and dogs were put to sleep as a consequence.

Britain did more than others, true. But they also shut off immigration to mandatory Palestine even though the Jewish community there would have happily absorbed those immigrants.

End of the day though, Jews learnt that tbey can only rely on themselves. Even a friendly country wasn't willing to save them. Now Jews always have a safe haven when needed.

Eh? Who are you? 🤣

I left a comment directed at the OP, why have you twisted it and made it about you. Are you low on attention?

I think if you’re a non-Jew then wearing a pin of the Star of David is performative. Like wearing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt, or leaving a “Free Palestine” comment on a random YouTube video.

It’s done to appease conscience rather than to create substantive, systemic change.

It's certainly less performative then all those people now wearing a keffiyah.
