AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

No. MOst people who are doing mindboggling amounts of laundry are making work for themselves by washing things which aren't actually dirty.

Impossible for all of ours to be finished in a day unless it’s a very warm day and can be dried quickly outside. I have 5 DC so between the 7 of us there’s minimum 8 loads a week I’d say at a guess. I do the bulk of it on Friday evening/Saturday but some will inevitably spill into Sunday. Tend to also do a midweek wash to keep on top otherwise by the weekend it’s far too much to cope with. If using the tumble dryer it takes much longer, I find large loads take about 4 hours to dry.

Pants and socks go in the relevant colour wash. The only separation I do is dark/colours, white, towels (no softener) and wool. I’d have to wait ages to have enough pants and socks to justify a full load!

Not everyone does it every week

We are a family of 3 (1 adult and 2 teens). I don’t exactly know how many loads I do a week, but 2-3? And me and 16 yr old do running and gym/weights 5-6 days a week. I don’t wash my stuff after weights, as I don’t sweat enough. Just save it and wear it the next time.

Apart from the height of summer I wear clothes more than one day (not pants or socks!) but T-shirts, jeans, jumpers.

@Picklelily99 socks and pants go in general clothes wash here, general clothes split between colours rather than type. May have separate delicate clothes at lower temp every other week. But other than that my list is similar to yours

I hang out at night too. I’m out the house early so don’t have time to wait for a wash to be done before hanging it out. There’s nothing worse than wasting a sunny and windy day with nothing on the line!

1 for socks and pants for a start! Why separate them?!

As a family of 4 (me, adult dd and 2 younger dc) we do:
Mon - 2 x single bed sheets
Tuesday - towels
Wednesday - darks
Thursday - throws
Friday - whites & 2 x double bed sheets
Sat - darks

We don’t have a tumble dryer. We put the washing on either as soon as home from work or to come on about 5am so it can be hung out straight away. It’s just a routine we have got into

Why are you washing cycling gloves???

Controversial on MN but I often peg our washing the night before, if the weather is going to be good. Then bring it in the next morning. I realise this leads to it being “darker on”.

@Growingasaperson but surely when someone is posting on here how many loads in a day/week they mean in the household not necessarily by each individual person

People that dont obsessively wash towels, pj's and every item of clothing after one wear. Family of three here, two teens. Usually two loads of clothes and then maybe a bedding one but not every week. Towels go.on as and when. I use a dryer until about now but if its wet I won't delay doing the wash. I use the dryer. I work ft, single parent, my time matters more to me than extra £ on the electricity bill.

Completely agree. Grassroots sports involves a massive amount of bits and bobs. Plus you’ve then got to match it all back up to the correct activity for the correct child! Gloves are my constant bugbear. I have a separate box solely for gloves for different activities!

1x delicates (my shirts)
1x jeans & t shirts
1x towels
1x bedding
And there's only 2x of us!
AND I can wash more of MY stuff later in the week too!!

Well unless she’s washing them against rocks at the river it’s just a question of loading the machine and pressing buttons then getting on with your day. Mind you I am one of those clean laundry in a basket for a week types, even though it’s just me now.

Showing my age. But I started out with a twin tub, and yes we used to do all the laundry in one day even with a family and working full time. So it is possible. No tumble dryer either!

If you read your washing machine instructions most of the cycles actually shouldn’t be done at maximum load of machine. I was surprised when I looked at the instructions for our last washing machine which has a large drum. Like most people I probably ignore that, unless using 15 minute cycle (which I am sure for most machines is not meant to be used for a full load of laundry)

Doing it for others. When my children were 11 they were responsible for their own washing (eg putting it in the machine) and helping to peg it out. And helping to fold it away.

It depends how old your kids are too. When mine were toddlers their clothes were a) tiny and b) just got chucked in all together because they didn't matter.

Now DD is the same height as me and wearing Hollister clothes that need to go on a delicate cycle so they don't shrink and I definitely can't put the pale pink top in with the dark blue jeans ...

Plus the primary school bright red cardigans are a liability 😅

Huh? We do ours over the weekend so it’s dry, away and ready for the next week. Essential for school uniform. Admittedly we barely iron. Normal, surely?

When I was single without children I did one load a week - one. Twice a month I did sheets etc

To be fair putting on a load 5 minutes. Pegging it out 10 minutes. Folding away 15 minutes (or less if you tumble dry).

I buy very little that needs different settings to be honest, I do that on purpose. Too much faff.

The shortest cycle on mine is 20mins for a 3kg. The 10kg wash takes an hour and half ant 40degrees and 2hrs at 60degrees. That’s an AEG A rated machine.
