AIBU to be amazed my friend does all her laundry in one day?

Sounds like you live in a big house though. We’re in a 3 bed London semi and I don’t have space for any more than the two laundry hampers we already have (one for kids, one for me and DH).

Also, we don’t have a utility room or a spare bedroom. There’s a washing machine under the counter in our kitchen and the heated airer and dehumidifier are permanently in mine and DH’s bedroom. I could obviously get everything done a lot quicker if I was just transferring from washer to dryer and hitting a button. But I have to hang each individual sodding item out by hand, or peg it out on the line. And then the same in reverse, then fold and put away. It just takes time.

I actually have to be very organised in my approach because of the lack of space otherwise we end up with clothes drying all over the place and massive piles of clean laundry everywhere.

Im so jealous of my friend who has a big utility room. She just has separate baskets on the counter for each family member and everyone’s dry clothes go in their respect baskets and just stay there until someone needs something. I bet she would be posting on here saying laundry is a piece of piss.

@BoredZelda most fire services recommend you don’t run washing machines, dryers or dishwashers overnight or when out of the house. Obviously fridges and freezers have to be run constantly

Many fires are due to electrical faults. I’m guessing most people don’t have their electrics and electrical goods serviced on a regular basis. Apart from our boiler we don’t (and that is actually gas!)

We have just had some electrical work done and we were advised to upgrade our fuse box, and it’s not that old a house. If we hadn’t had the work done it would never have occurred to us to have it upgraded and checked

Yes, I aim for weekly. Although what actually happens is the children leave the old towels still hanging up and bring up new ones and so we do it fortnightly, but it's about 8 towels by then!

You probably have a small washing machine if you're a single person.

There are currently 3 adults in my house. I washed all the dark stuff yesterday and will do all the lights today. Bedding and towels and other miscellaneous bits (tea towels, dish cloths, bath mats etc) get done mid week. Probably 3 loads of these a fortnight. That's 3.5 loads a week for 3 people. When DD comes home from university we will probably go up to 4 loads a week.

Unless you are changing your bedding multiple times a week, or wearing and 4 separate outfits in a day and washing after each wear, you wouldn't get to 4 loads a week for a single person with our washing machine.

Who doesn't use towels for a week??? You wash towels every day?? I do replace hand towels every three days. But are you saying that your towels are basically single-use???

I do at least a load a day. Usually 2, so no way I could get it all done in a day. I don’t iron

For shits and giggles, I went and got all the laundry in my house after I did all my laundry yesterday. This is what we have. Neither pile warrants putting on a wash…I really don’t understand how families of 4 are creating 2.5 loads A DAY!!

I do mine in one day, I WFH so once every hour or so I leave my desk to stretch my legs & load/unload machines as required. I'm not sitting in front of them being hypnotized by watching my knickers go round and round

Maybe they do no sports, we do 2 loads of washing a week just on gym kit and sports kit plus giving the swimming kit a rinse.

Fridge freezers are as much of a risk as washing machines and nobody is turning those off when they leave the house.

No I'm just very mindful of not over loading the washing machine, taking clothes out of the machine as soon as it stops & hanging them up carefully on the line then when dry putting them straight on hangers or folding them properly to put away.

i used to iron school uniform shirts & other bits when the kids were here.

because if my disability I do wear a lot of leggings, but NO polyester 🤣

I just do laundry as and when I can be arsed. The thought of spending a whole day focusing on laundry sounds very boring.

I don’t iron. But the washing and drying part isn’t very labour intensive. Putting items in the machine and taking them out is easy. The trick is to time it right - put the first load on first thing, then you have pretty much all day for it to dry. Then it’s only a few minutes to fold it and put it away. IMO this is easy to fit around everything else.

I'm sorry to hear about your DH 😢. How are you (physically) coping without him?

mine wouldn't fit all that bedding in one load. I love my machine (LG Direct Drive 7kg, it's old now (14)) & I dread the day it does its last wash 😢)

the 7kg suits me (I'm disabled too) & it's more than enough to peg on the line at once🤣

2.5 loads a week is just sheets and towels. What about everything else?

I do roughly 4 loads a week as a single person, how is someone with kids managing 2?!
I don't have a dryer so although at this time of year I can get a wash dried in a day out on a line, I can't generally get more done as I just can't get it dried to make space for the next lot.
