I'm in South Sefton and you can practically smell the fear coming from the Labour councillors. We don't see the over-entitled shower from one decade to the next because our vote is expected not earned, but this time they're everywhere pretending they do stuff which is really weird.

Lol at the posters who can forensically list every little obscure detail why Reform is awful but are still so ignorant about UK politics they think the PM is decent and respected. Make it make sense.

West Streeting will make a move

Streeting has close ties with Mandelson. I don't think ot will be him.

Some of that is true. I don’t doubt for a minute that Russia and China are stirring up discontent surreptitiously. I was talking about this thread, though, not on some general level.

I see this quite a lot on MN. Criticise any party but Labour and it’s all genuine. But criticise Labour and suddenly the bot accusation gets wheeled out.

I think it’s because a lot of the criticism of Labour and Starmer is at such an asinine level, with names frequently misspelled etc, that it doesn’t always look entirely genuine.

Are you a Green supporter or a Reform supporter? SNP? Plaid? And who would you like to be the new Labour PM?

Can we also please see the back of the atrocity that is Polanski as well😵‍💫

I think when people talk about "Russian bots" it's not to say that the people who are against whatever party are all bots or trolls but it's factual to say there are hostile states who are meddling in UK politics. It's been the case for well over a decade. So it's also not accurate to claim it's not a factor.

Remember how politics used to be far less adversarial? Yeah. It's that kind of thing they whip up. But all they do is light the fuse. Others amplify it (with the assistance of a tax avoidant media).

Reform will probably do quite well unfortunately seeing as their average voter age is 61 so they have time on their hands to vote.

This is a pretty ageist comment. Since all 61 year olds have to wait until 67 for their state pension I imagine they will be working just like everyone else on here.

I agree with the consensus on Politics Joe to be honest. They will face substantial losses, kick Starmer out and pave the way for Rayner and Burnham to return. I think those two are the exact sort of leaders Labour needs. Starmer is as dull as dishwater.

As Burham doesn't even have a seat at the moment and Rayner doesn't have the backing of the party, I doubt they'll be doing much.

Why does a politician need to be exciting.?I want serious grown ups in charge who have a track record of holding down serious, grown up jobs. I want a political party that will make unpopular choices that might fix the economy long-term. A constant merry go.round of leaders and governments weakens the ability of anyone in charge to do anything g other than the popular thing. Im not saying I support Starmer or Labour generally but I wouldn't not vote for them on the basis of 'dull'.

Who do you see? If you’re thinking Russian bots that’s quite an assumption.

There are huge numbers in the UK who want rid of Labour, for lots of different reasons. Gloating over the deserved downfall of the awful bunch of useless hypocrites that make up the present Labour Party is open to anyone.

Ridiculing and opposing Labour is not undermining anything important and is not anti-democratic.

I voted Labour at the general election and I think that the issue is Starmer and Reeves rather than the whole party.

He certainly has not been running a Labour government and Reeves is completely incompetent.

Starmer just brought us a Tory reboot with a complete lack of direction and bold measures.

I think the best that could come out of the local elections aftermath is a change of leadership and a real Labour PM in charge who finally brings back utilities and transport in public ownership, brings back closer link to the EU and stops demonising pensioners and disabled people.

I live in Kent in a council where Reform was voted in. They have been useless and put council tax up so people should think twice before voting for them...

I’m not a labour voter but a part of me does feel a bit sad about this because I feel like the Centre ground parties have taken a bashing recently and are going to be overtaken by extremist parties (Greens, Reform etc) on both the left and the right. I find this really worrying to be honest, but the same time I think the labour and Tories brought it on themselves.

Lib Dems have still very much held the centre ground.

Girasoli · 02/05/2026 08:23

I think there are going to be a lot of councils where the greens do well in some wards, and reform in others and end up as 'no overall control'.

Also, not everywhere is having local elections at the moment, we are a unitary authority and we're not.

I think that would be good for Labour. I’ve always voted Tory. But I would vote for Wes if it meant Labour had a chance of winning the next GE and keeping Reform and the dreadful Greens out of power.

Angelor Raynor is desperate to become Prime Minister, and Andy Burnham already has Labour MPs ready to give up their seats for him.

Burnham shouldn’t have been blocked from standing in Denton but he’d still need a by-election to make a move, which would need to be orchestrated.

I'm baffled by people rubbing their hands with glee at how unpopular Labour are. When Reform appears to be the alternative. I didn't vote for Labour but do have some sympathy with what they're trying to do. And KS's record globally has been pretty good so far. Better than the previous lot.

I have a Reform council (it's important to remember these are council elections in the most part) and they have just spent millions on private consultants to identify cost savings. What they've not done is link any payments to these consultants to actual cost savings being achieved. They have been monumentally scammed and yet are completely oblivious to the fact.

This added to Farage's "oops I forgot to declare I was given a £5 million prezzie" and it's kind of baffling that a party that has achieved nothing apart from being a negative drag on the UK is so popular. I mean what has Nigel ever actually been right about? Brexit? Nope. Being cosy with Russia (he used to be on RT pretty regularly)? Nope. Liz Truss' budget being the best ever? Nope. Iran war? Nope.

But crack on. If the likes of Reform are consistently shown to be as appalling as they have been so far in positions of power, then perhaps people will see through the reality of them.

In the meantime, if I had a vote, which I don't, I'd vote for the Lib Dems who, despite Davey's antics (which is the only way he manages to get news coverage when all Nige has to do is hold a pint), actually come up with some common sense from time to time unlike pie in the sky Greens or the Tory extremist retirement home Reform.

No elections here. Most of the Merseyside Councils aren’t up for election this year.

Sefton is an 'all out' year this year.

Who doesn't have time to vote when you can make a postal votes if you can manage to make it to a polling station for 2 minutes between 7am and 10pm?

Edited

Whilst I do agree, I think fewer younger people vote in local elections in general, they’re lower on people’s priorities.

To my shame I didn’t used to vote in the local elections until I was a bit older and had more political interest/understanding.

I have no truck with the wider labour party and consider them an unmanageable bunch of loons who never should have been voted into power. They have unilaterally shown their true colours and have destroyed the UK economy more quickly than I anticipated. Oh how I was shot down by other MNetters when I predicted this.

Kier personally I think is pretty decent and unlike Bliar, one of his predecessors, he hasn't taken us into an illegal war, or sold the gold like Brown, oh but there's no gold to sell - they fucked that up last time.

The best result for us locally will be for the Residents' Association to be trounced. There is something particularly nasty about standing on an independent ticket to hide your left wing core.

I’m not sure why Brown selling gold is such an issue that bothers some people so much.

It’s peanuts compared to the major problems in the uk. It would be worth about £40 billion now - that’s about 4 months of debt interest alone nowadays
