To do phone sex job

Hi all, I'm really struggling with a decision and wonder what people thought.
I work full-time for a big care provider and whilst I don't earn terrible money I am starting to struggle to make ends meet
I've looked at a second job but as a single mum with small kids I couldn't commit to anything else on a contractual basis.
A good friend recently told me she was working on an ad-hoc basis for a chatline operator where you pick your own hours.
The money is ok and it helps her financially.
I've started giving this line of work serious thought.
I have every other weekend free where I could do this without my children present and it would mean I wouldn't have to commit to shifts etc.
I'm worried my main job would find out and I would be in trouble due to the nature of the work, which is the main thing making me hesitant.
Should I give it a go? Thoughts please.

You do get sound effects over the phone. I used to be a Samaritan and had to deal regularly with 'inappropriate' calls. "Tell me about your feelings" I'd be trying to steer them away from detail and soon start detecting a quickening rhythmic moist noise in the background. Ahhhhh. End call.

I'm amazed these things still exist. It's very 1970s and outdated. Like pp I'd assumed it was all OnlyFans now. Why would anyone pay for a voice on a phone?

Do not do this, especially not from a place of desperation. Its a horrible line of work the people who call you are horrible and it will suck your soul out. It will also potentially desensitise you and then you end you doing more than you initially intended. It will also mess your head up about men for a long time, maybe forever in a way that could affect your relationships in future.

This thread is a blast from past, Mumsnet was full of them when I joined 15 years ago!

Do phone sex lines still exist?

I thought it was all webcam now?

Lol @BillieWiper that sounds grim! The work is from home so luckily no other sound effects 😆

I remember going to a job interview for a sex line call centre?! Like I get doing it from home but there were booths with them all eating and drinking and making all these weird slurpy noises! It was chaotic.

I think I'd find it kinda embarrassing as I wouldn't know what to say, but no harm in trying it.

I'd imagine some of the men are pretty grim and they might wanna talk about stuff that's way beyond your boundaries. So in that respect it could be a bit yuck.

But it's not like they'll know who you are and you can hang up and bar people presumably if they overstep.

For context I had looked at doing tutoring so work were aware I was possibly going to have h a second income, sadly it didn't come off but I'm guessing they would only see my tax code change and not the company etc. I believe the company is listed as a media company anyway.
I have asked her about content and the rules are no rape, violence , incest or beastiality or calls are terminated.

No harm giving it a bash, you've not nothing to lose.

Whatifitallgoesright · 01/05/2026 17:40

I used to be amused by the idea of getting paid to talk filth to some bloke while I was cutting my toenails or doing the ironing. Now I'm older I'm not so sure. Imagine having to pretend to be aroused when a man is telling you how hot it is to strangle you.

I'd get more detail about the permitted content of the calls from your friend and the organisation first.

ginasevern · 01/05/2026 17:39

Why not. Providing it is just a chatline and they don't want "extras". I guess your existing employer would find out through tax code changes but they wouldn't know what you were doing. I guess they might ask you though. I'm sure other posters will be along with some moral reasons but if it fits your free hours, you need the money and your kids aren't around then give it a go. I assume your friend hasn't raised any red flags about it?
