Is this fair?

One of my nieces was getting married later in the summer, but last week it was all called off.
she had a hen party booked abroad and everyone going has paid nearly £300 as a deposit which has now obviously been lost.
she has now written in the group that she is so sorry but they all need to pay a cancellation fee of just under £100.
Do you think this fair. Just as an aside the wedding is off as she was texting other men.
BTW it’s not me going but my daughter

Is this £300 each? And that's just the deposit? And another £100 each to cancel? Surely the deposit is the cancellation fee? That's the whole point of a deposit, isn't it?

How much was the whole thing going to cost per person? 😱

I think if you are going to lose £400 anyway then you may as well just pay the extra and go.

Hollybollyhughes · 02/05/2026 20:04

Cancelled because of her awful behaviour so she foots the bill. Lesson learned, be a decent person or there are consequences. I wouldn't pay nor feel I should under these circumstances.

Sorry whose taking advantage of her misery ?

I think they are referring to the travel company

pollymere · 02/05/2026 19:48

Why on earth was a hen do costing more than £400 each?!

Because they were going abroad. It is in the OP.

It’s awkward for them all to go as my daughter was only going to keep the bride (not to be)sister company as they are older. I think my daughter will have to pay it as she doesn’t want to upset the family. I’m glad you all think it’s cheeky but yes there is a cancellation fee as it has been checked out online.

Who cares about upsetting the family they've wasted £300 of your daughters money she's the one who should be upset not them.

Teach your daughter to stand up for herself and not be walked over by people wanting you to be the bigger person and keep the peace.

The bride was in the wrong so she pays the price.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/05/2026 17:29

The ‘bride’ is being a cheeky fucker. Can you speak to her parents? It seems bonkers that’s there a cancellation fee on top of losing deposit, but maybe it’s because it was close to the date. If it was my friends I’d just go on the holiday anyway, but I would be mortified if my friends lost out on £400 each, and furious if the ‘bride’ was my child and expecting friends and family to be out of pocket because of her actions. Don’t get me wrong, better the wedding was called off if she’s not actually ready to commit, but don’t let other people pay the price.

This - the future bride has no morals so she can reimburse everyone for their lost deposit. If l was one of the hens l would never speak to her again.

Sunisgettinganewhaton · 02/05/2026 19:51

I'd be asking for a copy of the email.. She is trying to claw lost wedding costs back imo.

PurpleH · 02/05/2026 19:50

If a deposit has been paid, why is there a cancellation fee? The deposit is there to protect the business in situations of cancellation, shouldn’t be a further fee…

to your question, no the bride should be paying the cost. But if it were me I’d just go on the “holiday” anyway

lovemelovemydogs · 02/05/2026 19:50

In my opinion she owes them their £300 deposits back and is the only person liable for the cancellation fee. She clearly learnt nothing!!! Wow!!!

pollymere · 02/05/2026 19:48

Why on earth was a hen do costing more than £400 each?!

ThejoyofNC · 02/05/2026 19:47

Not a chance I'd pay. She should have thought about that before cheating.

nobullshitformedagainstmewillprosper · 01/05/2026 16:31

Hell nah that's what the deposit is for! And this poor woman is going through such turmoil how awful of them to try and take advantage of her misery.

Turmoil of her own doing!! The poor groom investing time and money in someone texting other blocks on the run up to their wedding! No sympathy for her!!

SweetnsourNZ · 02/05/2026 19:44

MyCottageGarden · 01/05/2026 14:42

If there’s a deposit then there should not be a bloody cancellation fee! Tell your DD not to pay another penny!

My thoughts too. Isn't that the idea of a deposit. Anyway, I think the bride should pay as she caused the cancelation. As pp said, it could come out of the wedding fund.

SweetnsourNZ · 02/05/2026 19:41

Sidebeforeself · 01/05/2026 14:22

But surely if you went that would cost you even more in spending money?!

I wouldn’t go and I would tell her she’s got to cover the costs herself

Edited

Suppose it would depend on if it was somewhere you had looked forward to going anyway and if you liked the other hens. Also if you had booked time off from work and couldn't change that now.

Pessismistic · 02/05/2026 19:31

Oh wow how cheeky is the ex bride to be she should be reimbursing the hens in full she was the one who fucked up the holiday.

Liberancho · 02/05/2026 19:25

notgivinga · 01/05/2026 14:36

I am surprised you say she will probably pay it so as not to upset the family.

I would really encourage my dd to tell this cousin to fuck off. The audacity in asking for to pay the cancellation fee on top of losing these women 300 pounds each, is astounding to me. There is no amount of peace I would care about keeping in the face of such cheeky fuckery.

ThatLemonBee · 02/05/2026 19:14

I would be asking her for the £300 the cheek of her . Wow

WhatMyNameis · 02/05/2026 19:13

Just don’t cancel it and don’t go???

Moveoverdarlin · 02/05/2026 19:03

The bride one hundred percent should be paying the entire cancellation fee. It’s one of those situations where you need to throw money at a very awkward situation to make it go away.

You can’t possibly say to people ‘So…girls…I have been texting other blokes so the wedding is off. I know you have already paid a significant amount of money towards the hen do, which is now not happening, but I need you to pay even more money to NOT go.’

She’s bonkers or very thick. I would not pay in a million years. She needs to face the consequences of her actions. If that were me I would work my ass off and pay all the hens back what they had already forked out.

pouletvous · 02/05/2026 18:56

It’s just £100

nevermind. She’s saved all the money she would have spent on the stupid hen do

Jack80 · 02/05/2026 18:51

You all go and have a break up holiday.

hcee19 · 02/05/2026 18:48

All the girls booked on the trip should go anyway, as sometimes the cancellation fee can exceed the initial deposit. I imagine your niece is not that popular at them at the moment.

Lougle · 02/05/2026 18:38

From what I've read on the Love Holidays website, the flight costs are charged in full, then there is a £75 cancellation charge. So presumably, the flights were £325pp?

Marieb19 · 02/05/2026 18:31

If they have all lost their deposits how is there also a cancellation fee? Is the fee legally chargeable and recoverable in the uk if it is a foreign holiday?

browneyes77 · 02/05/2026 18:29

Absolutely fucking not.

The wedding was called off due to her being unfaithful. None of what’s happened is the fault of any of the guests that were going on the hen do, who have already shelled out enough money that they’ll be losing.

She’s a CF and I would in no way shape or form, be guilt tripped into paying something I wasn’t liable for, just because some family members might get ‘upset’. I’d be telling them to direct their upset at the person who caused it. Not the innocent guests who’ve already lost money because of her actions.

Also, how much is the bloody cancellation fee if everyone is being asked to chip in an extra £100 each?!

(And like other PP’s, I’m struggling to see why there would be a cancellation fee, when the loss of deposits should cover cancellations)
