A direct question to those who do this. Can you please explain to me why?

Ditto people who watch videos or listen to music out loud in public places.

Something has gone terribly wrong, hasn’t it. Supermarket yesterday, a couple shouting across the aisle about their product choices and meal planning. As if nobody else was there. Not a concern in the world for tact or decorum , decency or the fact that they were shouting across other people who were trying to decide things in their own heads. And people walking past blaring into their phones. I really can’t bear trains, tube, or shops anymore. Other peoples lack of sensitivity is ruining many peoples interactions with the world.

’Decorum’. What a great word, but sadly missing from so many people’s behaviour. Strange no one has come on to this thread to defend their rights.

That was a big problem during covid when they only let one person in the supermarket so the man went in, but he couldn't manage to do family grocery shopping without help from his wife on a live video call.

Well, it's still happening in the supermarket I go go!

Can't stand this, and I like the fact nobody has come on here to say they think it's fine. I like taking calls on loudspeaker rather than with the phone to my ear, but in private fgs, not public. Another similar bugbear (again, usually on trains!) is when people are messaging so allow their phone to constantly beep. You are literally sitting there looking at your phone; you can see the messages coming in - put it on silent.

Even worse is someone who hasn’t turned off the noises it can make when you press any key!! Like on old Nokias

I have even started noticing this happening in supermarkets now: someone shops via video call and walks all the way around the store having a loud chat with the other person on the phone 😳

I’m baffled that nobody has come on to defend themselves, given the number of people who do this! The last time I was on a train there was a young woman conducting an interview via Teams on the train. 😳 She wasn’t wearing headphones so the entire carriage could hear everything the candidate was saying. 🤦‍♀️😂 A few glares from myself and few others didn’t work so a few of us started giving loud feedback on the candidates responses. She remained oblivious!🙄😂 I wonder if the candidate got the job and secretly hope we saved them from working with an absolute arsehole!

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 02/05/2026 13:43

I was on a bus the other day and there was a young man watching very loud videos on his phone - the entire bus had no option not but to listen to them.

He was behind me as we were both getting off the bus, so I very politely suggested that he might want to use earphones next time so that the sound didn't disturb other passengers. He responded with a fairly extreme barrage of abuse. I guess some people just don't give a shit.

Sat waiting for a train this week, the train before mine is on the platform and not quiet. Bloke next to me, screaming into the call on loud speaker because of the train noise. At no point did he he think to move away from the train, and yup! He was just talking crap and we all got to listen 🙄

It's not something I make a habit of, but my mum has hearing loss and can only seem to hear me on the phone when I put it on speaker, but if I have to do that in front of other people I try to keep it short & to the point.

I ask people if they have headphones because their noise is annoying, or if they are playing music, I ask them to play Billy Joel. They look at me gone out and I tell them I’d like them to play some music I can enjoy instead of the garbage they are playing as it’s clearly meant to be a group activity.

It is certainly true that people who play music publically also have the worst taste in music.

I think it’s because COVID turned everyone into consumers first, rather than participants in a society who have a responsibility to others for their behaviour in a public space. So people pretty much do whatever they want and are very surprised and aggrieved if challenged about it.

The top Mumsnet tip I heard to tackle this, is to purr into their phone in a sleepy voice ‘Darling, come back to bed…’ 😊
Please, please try it and let us know how you get on.

I don’t travel by public transport very often but wonder if I’d have the guts to do that, or to play some stirring Sousa marches on speaker with my own phone 🎺 Probably start with The Liberty Bell 🤔

Edited

How is this COVID thing?

COVID saw us all (mostly) sacrifice our personal freedoms for the sake of the most vulnerable. That's not turning us into consumers. Quite the opposite.

Cazziebo · 02/05/2026 10:35

This week I’ve been on 6 trains, 2 buses and in two airport lounges. This was going on in every single one. I find it impossible to read, work or think when that kind of noise is going on (oddly I can zone out people having normal volume conversations). It is so irritating.

I think the obsession with not “shaming” people has contributed as well. Don’t shame them they might be hard of hearing and find it easier face time and look at the person. Don’t shame them their phone might be broken and it’s an urgent call. This weird obsession about never ever “shaming” someone for doing something bad or anti social. The whole “You never know what is going on in someone’s life so just in case don’t say anything ever”.

Followed by ‘be kind’ 🙄

I didn’t even think about that @Bjorkdidit, but, you’re absolutely right.

Or they might have sensory issues and be unable to wear headphones but also cannot be out in public without music or be in constant contact with a loved one. They might not be able to afford headphones.

I'm actually surprised for once that Mumsnet apparently doesn't have a 'whatabout' for this situation.

Dozer · 02/05/2026 08:21

It’s not concern about ‘shaming’ that stops people asking them to stop, it’s fear of abuse or violence.

Fizbosshoes · 02/05/2026 08:21

I feel just as aggrieved as people with "leaky" or shit headphones where you can hear 50% of what's playing, ftom 5 rows away. My first thought is how annoying and the 2nd is how loud is that actually in their ears?
At least the people with no headphones are upfront about how anti social theyre being! 🤣

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 02/05/2026 08:18

And why is the music always complete shite??

Dozer · 02/05/2026 08:17

annoying, along with played out loud music, TV, social media.

Sometimes with the unspoken threat of verbal abuse or violence should anyone ask them to stop the noise.

Bjorkdidit · 02/05/2026 08:12

Yes, that's the weirdest thing. Given that this is often a 'young person' thing and most of them 'hate phone calls' yet it seems that they can't get enough of them when they're in a confined space and dozens of other passengers are forced to listen to them calling people.

JJkate · 02/05/2026 08:09

@Fizbosshoes me too, if I have to take a call I answer (not on loudspeaker) and say "I'm on the train so can't really talk" and arrange to speak later or sort whatever needs sorting quickly, and quietly e.g. "yes, meet you by M&S at 2pm". I mean, who even makes phone calls anymore anyway?!
