Nevermind middle class, it’s in the middle of nowhere! MC is less about the house and more about the area IMO - there are terrace rows in London that are undoubtedly MC and mansions in other areas that definitely are not.

It's in the middle of some gorgeous countryside. Many people would want to live there for that or simply for where their family is settled.

A settee belongs in a front room!

nooo, front room has a sofa, a lounge has a settee

Teeny tiny garden too, for the size of the house. Most middle class people I know have land, some have acres of it. Not a postage stamp back garden.

.

Edited

I do not associate middle class with land owning.

More with Victorian semis or detacheds in the south-east with teal blue front parlours and too many pictures on the wall.

It's giving 'desperate to make people think I'm middle class' vibes...

Ha. I don't think so. People desperate to appear MC wouldn't have that decor and hot tub. The aspiring MC abhors a hot tub.
Looks to me like the house of people with enough money to have their house the way they want it with the things they want in it, who couldn't give a monkeys about class.

I’m looking at a similar house (in a slightly different area) and I suppose wanted to know what people would think of me if I lived somewhere like that! I know it’s shallow!

What do you want people to think about you?

Crispynoodle · 30/04/2026 22:15

Upper middle class for sure

IckyIck · 30/04/2026 22:14

Definitely not upper class, it has a WC not a lavatory.

Living room - Somewhere you sit on a settee and eat rich tea biscuits straight from the packet.

Sitting room - The settee's called a sofa and it's chocolate Hobnobs served on a plate with doily.

Lounge - You're horizontal a couch with a Domino's pizza balancing on your hoody front.

Parlour - Purely used for viewing dead aunt in casket.

A settee belongs in a front room!

Ignoring the bland decor and weird grey room, it's a perfectly decent house and a lot more house than the majority of people are living in.

Consider whether the house suits your needs - family, budget and lifestyle - before you worry about what others might think. The decor, you can change, so focus on location and floor plan.

Do houses have a class system? Is it the size, the area, the age? I feel happy to have a diverse group of friends from all different backgrounds, I don’t think I could pigeonhole them into ‘house types’.

I know people who have an ex-council flat (bought for over £1.5m), which they bought because of the area.

You like what you like, what you can afford, local amenities such as culture, transport links, schools, etc. I know people who hate their house (in terms of build), but it hits most of their needs.

If it suits you, get it. Hopefully you have friends that aren’t judgmental so embrace it!

Do houses have a class system?

It's to do with where they went to school (sorry, couldn't resist) 😅

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · 30/04/2026 22:12

Tbh I am distracted by how much good garden space has been covered by lawn, wood, or stones. I do not know about the class/money question but I would have invested in roses!

BowlCone · 30/04/2026 22:12

I think when people talk about middle class here it’s assumed they mean upper middle class, but the middle class is a broad church.

To me that house is lower middle class, aspirational-basic (the Deano meme if that means anything to anyone).

Justbloodydoit · 30/04/2026 22:11

No study, so it’s doomed really

flagpolesitta · 30/04/2026 22:11

bohemianwrapsody · 30/04/2026 21:15

Nothing middle class about that house. No books, art, evidence of travels, musical instruments...just an awful lot of fake plants.

Does any ‘evidence of travel’ count? My aunties entire fridge front is full of interesting magnets from every destination she’s been to ranging from Majorca and turkey to Great Yarmouth and Blackpool.

and a bit new money

Yeah, and too grey and white and bland.

Zov · 30/04/2026 22:10

Just because someone lives in a large house, that does not automatically mean they are middle class. As I said, it's giving 'please think I am middle class' vibes...... Too try-hard.

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · 30/04/2026 22:09

It is expensive, but class and money are not the same.

viques · 30/04/2026 22:09

They have rolled up green towels as a feature.. I think that tells us all we need to know.

Newusername0 · 30/04/2026 22:09

My god, some of these answers are trying way too hard. ‘At best upper working class, because it’s a new build with a hot tub’ 😂😂 It’s giving green!

OP - why do you care?

Funnys · 30/04/2026 22:08

I imagine the owner of this house is hardworking, bright and has done very well at work based on their own merits, with a degree or equivalent obtained through work. I don’t think this is the house of a traditional middle class professional eg solicitor, doctor, stockbroker, actuary, journalist, it’s the house of an aspirer. I absolutely hate Redrow, the houses are really horrible and postmodern and the historical styles they ape all shoved together eg mock Tudor next to mock arts and crafts. I’d rather live in a 30s 3 bed semi - I wonder if the square footage is that much more.

i can imagine a doctor or solicitor living in this house. It’s fabulous I can only assume the posters criticising it are very wealthy indeed and living in mansions! don’t know anyone who lives in a house like this. It makes mine look like a hovel!

Funnys · 30/04/2026 22:08

its OK. Round here it would be £1.5m though

@worldshottestmom @BurnTheWholeThingDown I don’t get your replies?

It seems like this is a piss take because it’s so ridiculous.

The average house size in the UK is approximately 818 to 915 sq ft. this is 2,300+

If you don’t think having that amount of space in a property is middle class then you’re on another planet. But what does it matter. You buy wha you afford at the time.

From your replies, I see that you do actually think it is middle class, but wanted people to say it is not, because you don’t want to be seen as middle class? Bonkers.

As a working class person who is now living in a 850 sq foot house I don’t know if I could even describe myself as working class anymore because of my salary/lifestyle! There’s so many factors.

Wolmando · 30/04/2026 22:04

I would say more tradesman done well house.
