Parent went mental at my Ddog!

Can someone please tell me how Ddog was at fault here?! We were walking on a footpath close to our house earlier, and a woman was pushing her toddler along on a sort of bike thing.

As we were passing, the toddler dropped a cuddly toy. Ddog instinctively went to pick this up (it resembled a dog toy) and I stopped him.

The woman went mental, shouted at Ddog “NO, NO” and I hurried us away.

I can tell it has impacted him, he has been really subdued since which is not like him at all.

Am I wrong to think the woman should have had some restraint?

I've got dogs and I've had kids and some of my dogs I would have reacted like that myself! My previous Jack Russell adored cuddly toys and would steal them any chance he got. Never tore one but I can imagine a mother not wanting to pass a toy back to her child after it had been in the dog's mouth.

PeopleLikeColdplayYouCantTrustPeopleJez · 30/04/2026 18:56

All she did was say no loudly and firmly to your (d)dog and you’re offended on his behalf?

Is this like some kind of gentle parenting thing but with pets?

Morepositivemum · 30/04/2026 18:56

It could have been a popular toy, she might have been afraid the dog would do something, or the child would try and pull it away. I think she overreacted but we all do sometimes! Love labs btw!💗

DeathNote11 · 30/04/2026 18:56

OP, my dog is also subdued tonight. It's the warm weather, not hurty feelings.

Ok but genuine question - why does it bother you? I'd not refer to my MIL as DMIL or my daughter as DD but if other people do, I don't give it a second thought. I find it so bizarre the reaction to dogs on MN

It’s nothing to do with a dog. MIL is much quicker to type than mother in law so I get that, DDog is more letters to type, as is DCat, it’s just pointless and twee in my opinion.

Generally a floor has more bacteria than dog slobber - both I. Terms of higher quantity and diversity if bacteria. However, dog slobber - or should I say DDog slobber? - can carry specific pathogens that are harmful to humans. And can transmit infections if it gets into eyes/nose/mouth.

Better to leave any precious toys that might encounter these germs at home then, no?

I’m not triggered darl we just disagree it’s all good 😘

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 30/04/2026 18:53

You should have the restraint, not her.
I wouldn't want a child to handle something that had been in a dog's mouth.

FrLarryDuff · 30/04/2026 18:53

Ddog, ffs. Do we need the wanky D?

She did nothing wrong. Nothing at all.

Pearlstillsinging · 30/04/2026 18:52

We have Labs, I would have sat ours as close to the edge of the path as possible and stood between them and the pram/woman while they passed

Oh, well done for not jumping the shark.

Fair play.

Yep. Bit of a giveaway!

SunnySideChaos · 30/04/2026 18:48

She didn't want dog slobber on her kids soft toy, I'm not sure she did anything wrong? I'd do the same, so your dog didn't get it in it's mouth, the dog could have quite easily chewed it up given half the chance.

I also laughed at "ddog"/"dlab" too 😆!

cubistqueen · 30/04/2026 18:48

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/04/2026 18:03

I'm forever saying NO to my 2 DLabs 😂

My current dog and my last dog thought that no was part of their name 😂. It is a massive overreaction though. - the woman that is. Retrievers are called that for a reason, it’s instinctive (and what they are bred for 🙄). At the end of the day, yiur dog didn’t touch or, god forbid, slobber over it. So no harm done. Give him a cuddle and a treat and forget about the idiots on here who get far too excited when dogs are mentioned 🙄. Your dog will have forgotten it by now. Labs are awesome 🤩

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 30/04/2026 18:48

DDog is probably upset because you're upset OP.

Melsy88 · 30/04/2026 18:47

Metromayhem · 30/04/2026 18:42

Don’t be weird. I have a cat who I adore but I don’t call her dcat because it’s fucking stupid.

Yep still triggered...

stichguru · 30/04/2026 18:47

Nothing bizarre happened at all. This wasn't about her being angry at you or wanting you to pay her for the toy if your dog destroyed it, this was about her wanting him NOT to destroy the toy, probably because her son wouldn't sleep without it. IF your dog had destroyed the toy, or even just slobbered on it, even if you'd paid her for Ddog destroying her property, she probably wouldn't have been able to have a new one or even had that one washed and dried by bedtime.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 30/04/2026 18:46

Metromayhem · 30/04/2026 17:55

But the whole point of DH is that it’s quicker to type than husband. DDog is more letters, it’s so weird and cringe. Also nobody thinks your dog is dear or darling other than you, and I would shout at it if it tried to out its horrible slobbery mouth around my kids toys too.

Edited

Incorrect. I think the OP's dog is both dear and darling.

DeskGnome · 30/04/2026 18:43

WesternAmy · 30/04/2026 18:29

One thing this has taught me - there is something that (D)Mumsnetter’s hate more than having to sleep with their Husband’s. DDogs!

Oh, well done for not jumping the shark.

Fair play.

dovess · 30/04/2026 18:43

What on earth is a ‘Ddog?’ Get a grip .

Funnywonder · 30/04/2026 18:42

rwalker · 30/04/2026 17:50

She didn’t want Dslober on it

🤣🤣

I think you’re overreacting OP. The woman probably panicked a bit when she thought your dog was going to lift the toy. It’s a non event and I’m sure your pet will get over the trauma of being drop kicked - sorry shouted at - very soon.

DeskGnome · 30/04/2026 18:42

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 30/04/2026 18:25

Well someone was being dramatic and it wasn’t the OP

Lol it’s definitely the OP.

It’s a complete non story.

Metromayhem · 30/04/2026 18:42

Melsy88 · 30/04/2026 18:33

Love how triggered mumsnetters get when anyone dares to show affection towards their pets 🤣

Don’t be weird. I have a cat who I adore but I don’t call her dcat because it’s fucking stupid.

Arlanymor · 30/04/2026 18:41

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 30/04/2026 18:37

No….which I think is the point of the post 🤣🤣

there was no need for the woman to shout out, because the dog had already left the toy alone.

So you think she just randomly said stuff when the dog was fully under control and there was no need? Why would she even bother? Really why?

Or is it more likely that she didn't feel the dog was under control, this all happened in seconds, and she responded in the moment.

We have one side of the story and of course the OP is going to say: "But I had said no and it was all fine!" Someone who uses the term 'going mental' and applies that to someone saying 'no' twice?
