So bored of it.

This is nearly every mum in my area, pilates & matcha, botox and handyman & cleaner recommendations. No depth, no real worries..basic.

Aibu to want to meet funny, down to earth mums with depth and interesting pasts and conversations?

Where do you live, if you haven’t yet said?

I’m guessing Home Counties!

I’m London and there are definitely certain types within a certain demographic in my area. Quite a few ‘nutritionists’ or ‘interior designers’ that - this sounds unkind and judgemental, but it’s just the truth - actually don’t earn anything and live off their husband’s high incomes. They seem to have moved on from Pilates to padel. All their houses look similar!

That said, within the same area there are plenty of down to earth and very individual women. You just need to find your tribe!

Tbf I could really do with a recommendation for a good cleaner and a handyman.

Me too! 😆

Hallywally · 30/04/2026 17:11

You still haven’t described your actual interests or personality or what “elevates” you above these awful “basic” women.

eggsandsourdough · 30/04/2026 15:22

Socks over leggings till i die.

Interestingly enough my 13YO DD said its very uncool 😭but alas i shall continue

Bellasmellsofwee · 30/04/2026 14:51

I’d love to live in your area.

A parent punched a teacher in the playground at pickup on Tuesday afternoon. There are often fights between parents, but this is the first time I’ve seen a teacher get a fist to the face.

Count yourself lucky, it’s like Jeremy Kyle live where I live.

circusrunaways · 30/04/2026 14:46

& grandparents!

Mamaone11 · 29/04/2026 21:30

Agree with you. A lot of younger ladies seem to be carbon copies of each other. Leggings, sports socks, botox and lips, the same dull interests (at least on the surface of it)
Predictable Instagram crap, the same chavvy curled long hair.... Ugh

Edited

This isn’t new, individuality died in the 90s. It’s normal now for teenagers & parents to dress the same.

You sound shallow and judgy. Just because people don't reveal everything about themselves to casual acquaintances doesn't mean they don't have depth.

I'm in my 60s. I'm taking my botoxed self to Pilates in my socks over leggings later (although I'll have a decaf skinny Americano not a Matcha). You'd probably double judge me for being both old AND basic but I have knowledge and life experiences you probably couldn't imagine. But you'd never get close enough to find out.

A skinny Americano?

Americano is a long, black coffee. How do you make it skinny?

IWaffleAlot · 30/04/2026 10:05

Sounds like the area you are in is one season or
trend behind. It’s moved on since then.

mustwashmycurtains · 30/04/2026 09:46

OP I kind of agree with you.

as a Pilates-going Botox user myself I think both are great - but there is nothing more boring than people talking about them.

I do these thing quietly in private and do not discuss (with rare exceptions - if people ask specific questions) A lot of people I know seem to want to make it their whole personality and discuss nothing more interesting (see also - diets and food intolerances 🙄)

also - why are young people scared to reveal their ankles these days???

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 30/04/2026 09:40

I tried a matcha latte this morning off the back of this thread.
It was rank. 0/10

pouletvous · 30/04/2026 09:38

You’re too judgy

get to know these people more: nobody’s personality is defined by having a handyman and wearing leggings

Well botox can cause neuron damage in too high a dose so maybe that explains the lack of intellectual conversations? Judging by the pretty close 47%/53% vote it seems like there's probably far more mums playing dumb to be liked on the playground than what it appears in real life. As for the description....spot on, I can literally visualise the local leggings and socks mum clique now. Whose look is not complete without a baseball cap and gillet (often amusingly mispronounced).

How fucking mortifying for you. You’re taking the piss out of women that amusingly mispronounce gilet, whilst spelling it incorrectly!

Proves the point beautifully though. You’re looking down your nose at the way certain women dress and speak, all the while you up there on your high horse can’t spell.

Ireolu · 29/04/2026 21:33

I don't wear leggings outside my house
Matcha is grim
I don't do pilates
No botox either.

I am still pretty damned boring though so not sure we would be friends? I definitely do not feel the need to conform. Trying to teach DC this.

Edited

Ha ha same but I do wear leggings outside the house and I used to do yoga. Must return.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/04/2026 09:08

I live in what’s called an exclusive area in London (didn’t used to be!) and most of the mums I know certainly aren’t like that! Maybe some aspects but not all. In Nappy Valley in Clapham (not far from me) yes it is definitely more like that. Do your own thing though. Don’t be a sheep.

Clefable · 30/04/2026 09:05

I wear socks over my leggings so I don’t get ticks when out walking or running through fields and woods. Am I cool?!

Swiftie1878 · 30/04/2026 09:03

Wheredidallthegoodonesgo · 29/04/2026 19:55

I’m acquaintances/friends with many, there really is not much else in the main

Wow. Judgy much? 🤷‍♀️

Utopiaqueen · 30/04/2026 08:35

I'm in desperate need of botox. I wish I was friends with these mums so I could get some recommendations 😂

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 30/04/2026 08:03

ImFinePMSL · 30/04/2026 01:23

If you don’t care then why do you notice these women and ‘cringe’ because of how they look and what they wear? And then come online to bash them. They ain’t trying to impress anyone either.

It doesn’t make you better or superior.

It’s fucking weird misogynistic embarrassing behaviour.

Do try and understand context - you said they won’t think twice about me and that’s what I don’t care about.

I also didn’t come on the internet to bash them 🙄. I commented on a pre-existing mumsnet thread, just as I comment on lots of other threads about a variety of topics.

'Amusingly mispronounced' she says, while being unable to spell gilet herself.

That explains it! Tbh they look kind of scary as well - their expressionless faces give off Stepford wives vibes. I think @Wheredidallthegoodonesgo is wise to stay away from this.

circusrunaways · 30/04/2026 05:57

You are conflating two different things.

Yes, the uniform of leggings, white socks, cap, botox etc is boring but plenty of women who don’t dress like that have botox!

And dressing a certain way doesn’t mean you have a certain personality.

Crushed23 · 30/04/2026 04:09

There was a similar thread a while ago where people were incredulous that I don’t discuss council tax, geopolitical conflicts, climate disasters, and feminism with my friends. And we instead, you know, try to have fun together, make each other laugh, talk about music, raves and festivals, cool things happening in our city, travel plans/recommendations, dating/sex, etc. If protecting your peace and not getting bogged down with things you have no control over nor any interest in means you’re “basic” and have “no depth” then so be it.

Honestly, being basic and living in a bubble are highly, highly underrated.

CrazyGoatLady · 30/04/2026 03:02

Come and live up in the rural Borders. Neighbours are mainly farmers and fellow smallholders. No matcha to be had for miles around! Leggings permitted, but need to be fleece lined most of the year and usually have holes chewed by goats/sheep/pecked by chickens. Socks (usually welly socks and two pairs) necessary. I'm afraid in the local pub you do find a lot of swapping recommendations for sheep shearing and tractor repairs. Not sure if that's better than handymen or cleaners.

Botox - guilty as charged I'm afraid. Despite living up here and spending most of my free time up to my knees in mud and hay, I have retained a bit of vanity! But most people wouldn't know and I rarely tell anyone about it. I have it done on my work trips to the big smoke.

These may not be "your people" OP, but it doesn't mean they're bad people. You might well not be their sort either. You might be more likely to meet "your people" in hobby or interest based groups than playgroup/school mum circles where the main thing and perhaps the only thing you have in common is having kids of a similar age.
