Matcha, leggings with socks over, botox, yada yada yada

So bored of it.

This is nearly every mum in my area, pilates & matcha, botox and handyman & cleaner recommendations. No depth, no real worries..basic.

Aibu to want to meet funny, down to earth mums with depth and interesting pasts and conversations?

Crocs and lego

No, that’s not what she said. She said that’s what she wants to meet.

All she said is that they have no depth, and she seems to be assuming anyone who wears leggings, etc has no depth.

Again, this judging of other women you know nothing about because of their appearance really doesn’t make you cool or edgy. Quite the opposite actually.

Yes she wants to meet them because these women aren’t like that.

I’m sure OP didn’t write this thread to direct it at you, so I’m not sure why you’re taking it so personally.

I wear leggings but I know I have depth and can hold a decent conversation, so this thread doesn’t trigger me.

The reason they’re not sharing their interesting pasts in conversation with you is because you’re a judgemental twat. Hth

They sound like fairly well off youngish women living pleasant lives, with the ability to indulge themselves. I'm imagining that they are also conventionally attractive and have nice things.
Perhaps imagining them to be boring, basic and superficial helps you feel better about the fact that they have so many positive things going for them.

Blimms · 29/04/2026 22:06

I genuinely don’t understand why everyone is humouring a man who has come on MN to put down women, probably because nobody will date him.

Honestly I think a lot of current popular fashion is a lot more comfort based than I’ve known it to be (think leggings/gymwear, dryrobes, crocs, uggs, big comfy trainers) which is quite refreshing.

Agree its comfy. But today's uniform of oversized loungewear etc. won't age well because it's not aesthetically pleasing, it's quite unflattering. I think people will look back and cringe.

Feis123 · 29/04/2026 22:05

You don't know them to say what you say about depth, real worries, etc.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 29/04/2026 22:03

I wear socks under my leggings, and I've never met anyone who wears them over the leggings.

Why does anyone wear them over? Is it because you have cool socks?

EarthSight · 29/04/2026 22:00

What do you expect from those women? Do you think they'll want to discuss their husband's porn addiction, their debt, or how much they hate their in-laws at the school gate? How about every hello turning into a political debate? In the U.K, people aren't that open so they'll keep everything surface level unless they're with trusted friends. People get more and more guarded as they get older and yes, I'm afraid the conversations you're going to hear are going to be safe or boring topics, in the main.

You probably live in quite an affluent area. If you want 'interesting' pasts with people who've struggled in life, financially and otherwise, how about you move to a working class or poor area....but I'm guessing you won't.

I understand you may be bored or frustrated, but don't shrug off or dismiss what what @DinosaurBlue and others are saying. It just comes across like you're arrogant, and even interesting people won't necessarily want to speak to or befriend someone like this.

I say the above as someone who is actually from a working class background, who enjoys in-depth conversations, is probably more intellectual and artistic than the average person, has never done Botox or fillers and who doesn't do Pilates. I'm too poor to afford to buy a decent house, so I'm not in need of a handyman either.

Her hobbies and interests are fashion and health stuff, it’s not hard to understand! Honestly you’ve made her sound nicer than you, I’m sure she’s just fine without your friendship, just as you are without hers.

We all eat and wear clothes. It's not particularly interesting they're basic things in life.

Oh no, a mumsnetter thinks I'm not very nice! However will I cope!

But the problem is, you are equating people wearing the social uniform of convention, and the physical uniform of fashion, with people having nothing within.

Which makes me wonder why this fear that they are shallow irritates you so much. What depth is lacking in you? What thoughts, ideas, meanings are going unheard and unexpressed in you? Listen to your own inner needs and meet them, then other people become a source of treasure and joy, not a reminder of your own limitations.

I'd recommend doing the Artist's Way course.

I have never tried matcha, think leggings with socks over looks ridiculous, haven’t had Botox, tried Pilates once and found it really dull and don’t have either a cleaner or a handyman, but still think the OP sounds like an insufferable prick.

🤣 I like you

I don't understand socks over leggins becoming a popular fashion choice. It looks hideous

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/04/2026 21:56

You’re so deep OP.

MsSquiz · 29/04/2026 21:56

I wear leggings on the school run because they’re comfortable, and I pull my adidas socks up to keep my ankles warm!

I don’t do Pilates (or go to the gym) and I definitely don’t drink matcha (hot chocolate or fully caffeinated coffee for me)

I do get Botox (also got my boobs done recently)

I don’t have a cleaner but I do have a great handyman.

I’m a SAHM so I’m going to guess you would assume I have “no depth” but you won’t know because you’ve already judged this book by my school run cover!

I don’t think I’ll be too sad on missing out on a conversation with you

Meh

A lot of people present initially as quite boring, or at least with narrow interests and wholly conventional manners. Personally, I absolutely love a little flicker of acknowledgement from someone at the school gate that, say, living in late capitalism is not the best thing for our wellbeing, or maybe a small bit of evidence of an artistic perception, or spiritual sense, or irreverent humour...or something, something that elevates two people talking, to a teeny hint of a discussion of the human condition, the arc of history, the discovery of science, or what have you. That isn't the same as people being swanky or show off or unkind and I don't mean a world where we are all.deliberately intellectually snobbish. It doesn't mean everyone has to wade in with a philosophical treatise in the Co-op.

It's just, in conversation, revealing a bit of humanity and a bit of perceptiveness about society, a bit of general insight, rather than staying hidden behind the neat veil of social mores and conventional tastes. I like people who stick their necks out to do this, in tiny ways.

I know why people don't reveal these things though. They are either playing it safe, or waiting politely to take the lead from others, or they don't want to foist other concepts into the everyday (Funny thing about sex parties, right, is...).

Or, these vistas haven't occurred to them, and they think only on a purely surface level.

The last one of those is the least likely, so I think OP is just not finding the right way in with people. But it can be the case that some people don't value this meeting of minds, this small mental double take, and don't like shifting a concrete idea to an abstract one, so they don't do it as a matter of course. It's important to me and I like people who do it.

Hey OP, it's just the current fashion. 10 years ago it would've been skinny jeans and lattes and... oh I can't remember now (or maybe I've never been very fashionable.)
Ps I am a bit shocked that so many people are replying to say that Botox is normal for them - I had no idea that so many people have it! 😱

Practically every person around me does now
