To think saving on Universal Credit is extremely difficult?

It feels like Universal Credit doesn’t really leave much room for saving once basic living costs are covered. I know in theory people say to put even small amounts aside but in practice it seems very difficult when most of the money goes on essentials.

AIBU to think there’s very little opportunity to build savings on UC?

Again, they are winding you up to generate exactly this response. Might not even be a real person, all this hate is orchestrated.

I'm out of here.

My mum is 77 years old
I had to go to tribunal to get money for my triple leg fracture. My dad is a cunt who paid my mum 2 quid a week until I was 16 and fuck all else. How dare you suggest my mum hasn't ever helped me. How dare you. How dare you.

Good for you…
surely you realise that not everyone has a family that can offer financial support?

It was my family that really pushed me to claim benefits as I had zero income. Could not pay bills and could not eat. My mum would bring me some food, but she could not pay my bills.
I was brought up to see claiming benefits as something to be ashamed of, and that line of thinking did not help me when I actually needed some support.

Great. Good for you. Unfortunately other families don’t and prefer to leave their families claiming off the state, which is why we’re so skint as a country these days. Personally there is no way I’d claim a penny from the state until I have exhausted all other avenues, and my family are of a similar mindset. We help each other.

I am not on here to be attacked
By anyone. My mum had melanoma 9 years ago and she's lucky to be alive but she's not done enough for me. Right you are you twat

Please don't take shit random people say on an anonymous message board seriously or personally. Many are here just to provoke and upset, it's better to not bite, or just laugh at them.

This thread is pretty mild by previous standards.

I mean that if you close a current claim receiving the old rates to go back to work, then you become too unwell to work again you will get considerably less as you start from scratch as a new claimant.

But surely you wouldn't close your current claim as if you're disabled your disabled whether you work or not or do you more mean after illness like cancer. Then absolutely people should be protected while trying to get back into work

Having family like that is a privilege that not everyone has.

How fucking dare you. How dare you. My mum has helped me so many times in my life. How dare you
My mum was left with nothing when her and my dad split up. She got two quid a week until I was 16. And you are telling me that my 77 year old mum on a pension should have paid my disability benefits when I had a triple leg fracture and ptsd. That's it. Reported

As everyone has said, it's not meant as an income to save, more a temporary safety net. This is a daft/goady/insensitive question as so many people who work FT can't save. With all the free extras amd subsided CT you are actually saving as otherwise you would have to pay for dentist/glasses/rent.

I wish my disability was temporary unfortunately thats not how it works. What free extras i pay full council tax, mortgage, opticians and dentist. Have you not read the thread this has been explained multiple times

My lcwra is stopping at the end of this month. I made it clear on multiple posts - but I'm apparently on long term benefits. Retract your lies please or I'll be doing something about this

You don't have to justify yourself or explain. Don't rise to it. It's what they want.

Benefits are there as a safety net for unemployment or if you have to temporarily reduce from full time hours due to redundancy etc.

Fwiw I think the families of those on benefits should step up and help them when they need additional money, it seems mean that relatives don't help those with disabilities etc and just seem to pass them to the state to fund.

Ah you advocate the Mediterranean/familial model of welfare? Too patchy and too reliant on women to provide unpaid care. It's not a good idea to base a welfare model on women's invisible labour. In my opinion anyway.

I have been interrogated on similar threads too, and accused of being a benefit fraud because someone can't possibly post on MN if they have a mental illness.
There are some very nasty people on here. Saying to ignore them seems futile when seeing their posts makes you see red. I get it too.
Just refuse to engage with them... they do not ask such intrusive questions in good faith. You were assessed by the DWP, and got awarded what you were entitled to. That has nothing to do with anyone else and you do not owe anyone an explanation.

Please be kind to yourself ❤

Exactly. After a huge battle to boot

SpryTaupeTurtle · 29/04/2026 20:05

I'm not on long term benefits. On any level. This place is a cess pit

SpryTaupeTurtle · 29/04/2026 20:03

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 29/04/2026 19:43

Is the broken leg the reason for your long-term benefits?

I was stalked and threatened and then arrested because of my stalker. I have ptsd. I'm unwell. But despite that I won't ever claim benefits again. Leave me alone. My benefits are not long term. Leave me alone. I broke my leg in three places and I could not walk for six months. Leave me alone

I had to battle to get the benefits I did. Leave me alone. How dare you suggest someone who couldn't walk and felt like killing themselves after being stalked and arrested doesn't deserve benefits. Leave me alone

Reported. I have had enough of being questioned on here. That's it
I will not be accused of being on long term benefits when I am not and when my family thought they were going to lose me. Stop questioning people.

I got an award for 18 months until my leg healed.
