Is a St George cross an underlying sign of passive racism?

Walked past the house of a relatively new friend today and was surprised to see they’ve put up a huge flagpole, complete with St George cross flag flying high. I am generally patriotic , and put out the bunting for notable occasions without a second thought. I would probably be pleased had it been a Union Jack, but the St George has an undertone of racism to me, unless it’s flown for the football World Cup or something.
AIBU to reconsider friendship?

How do you know it wasn't for St. George's day? It was only last week.

MaybeIamJustABitch · 28/04/2026 19:20

Hang on, if I put a St George flag up I’m automatically racist, but if I put up a St Andrew or St Patrick or a Union Jack flag I’m not, as that certainly appears what you are inferring.

FFS.

Yes it’s 100% racist. I couldn't be friends with someone like that.

Why is it racist? I'm Scottish and come the WC there will be Scottish flags everywhere here!

FrLarryDuff · 28/04/2026 19:19

Even if they’re not racists (unlikely), the flag has become entrenched as racist symbol, so you’d have to be pretty dim to fly one outside your home.

Not english but from another UK country. If we fly our flag noone thinks its racist. Bit unfair all english people cant be patriotic and fly their flag...

She has put up the flag though. Why do you say she can’t put it up?

2dogsandabudgie · 28/04/2026 19:18

I thought women's six nations rugby was on. Why do people automatically think that anyone displaying an England flag is racist, it's just becoming boring now.

saveforthat · 28/04/2026 19:17

I think it's really sad and totally ridiculous that some posters have said it indicates racism. If your new friend displays any other signs of racism, yes ditch them but not for flying their country's flag. I flew one for St George's day and have only just taken it down.

DallazMajor · 28/04/2026 19:17

depends who’s flying it.

LovesLabradors · 28/04/2026 19:17

Our village pub put loads up for St George's Day, and they're still up.

nopeandnopeandnope · 28/04/2026 19:16

Craftysue · 28/04/2026 19:14

We always put a St George's flag out when England football team are playing at a major tournament. It's sad that some groups have hijacked it now.

Same here .

ScupperedbytheSea · 28/04/2026 19:16

I always think St George flags are useful in letting you know where the racists live.

I've never known anyone who is genuinely not racist even consider flying a St George flag for a millisecond.

You might as well put a 'turn back the boats' poster in your window.

Moonmelodies · 28/04/2026 19:15

Perhaps they are Genovese 🤷‍♀️

BeckyBloom · 28/04/2026 19:14

The UK is known to be one of the most tolerant welcoming countries in the world yet we still can’t fly our flag without being accused of racism…

BeckyBloom · 28/04/2026 19:13

Which other country when it flies its flag is said to be racist? Apart from UK/England? None…!

ForPinkDuck · 28/04/2026 19:12

Yes Reform voters.

Excited101 · 28/04/2026 19:12

At the moment, flags going up is 100% racist/reform. If they say it isn’t then they’re wrong.

CarrotSpa · 28/04/2026 19:12

The Church of England flys an England flag from all their churches. Are they racist too?

Createausername1970 · 28/04/2026 19:10

It is the flag of England. It is a shame some groups have hijacked it. I think it should be flown more to reclaim it.

Maybe that's what she thinks.

prepareforharvest · 28/04/2026 19:09

It was also St George’s day this week so that could be why

jdb9803 · 28/04/2026 19:09

I would assume they are Reform voters

Worrieddancemum · 28/04/2026 19:09

Definitely racist

Cantthinkofanewusernameffs · 28/04/2026 19:09

Perhaps they put it up for St George's day.

I feel you can be patriotic without being racist.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/04/2026 19:09

No it isn't.
