AIBU to wonder why Graham Norton needs to do ads?

The guy is surely fairly minted by any national standard. He never stops working.

I just think, if you don’t need the money - why would you do ads? It’s not as dignified as all his well paid work, surely.

Maybe he is using the ad funds for some charitable endeavour. But I hate to see it when they don’t need to do it and I definitely think slightly less of him. Pure, weird greed.

In that case all football players should retire after a year when they’ve made more than most people do in a lifetime.

Clefable · 28/04/2026 16:35

Aside from it being easy money, I imagine most of these people thrive on taking part in stuff, they are media personalities, actors, whatever and it’s their vocation. So whether it’s an advert or a film, they are doing what they enjoy doing, networking, doing a job for a friend or someone they’ve worked with before, just wanting to have a bit of fun or a change of scenery.

queenceleste · 28/04/2026 16:31

This is AIBU, so people can take a view.

It just makes me think less of him somehow; pure snobbery I agree.

I’d be more bothered about how broke you’d have to be to advertise Pepto Bismol, clutching your arse or chest and singing. Not to mention the deodorant one with close ups of buttocks and meat and two veg.

XenoBitch · 28/04/2026 16:28

Would you rather some unknown did the ad instead? The companies choose big and familiar names in their ads for a reason.
You have remembered the ad because of who is in it. That is literally what they want... for you to remember.
It is that, or make it catchy or annoying... that gets people pissed off on here too. There was a thread about the Pepto Bismol ad (you now all have the song in your head 😂)

The thing is he does so much genuinely merit based work, tv, radio, writing books.

"Merit" based work???

So all advertising is without merit?

Revolut want to make their mark in banking products and they've chosen him. Do you think they'd have as much reach if they didn't partner with a household name?

I cannot believe for a moment that he needs the money.

I cannot believe for a moment that someone in British society would decide who in public life "needs" more money.

If Graham Norton was worth £5 million, would he deserve the money?

What about £15 million - can he do ads then?

Where does it stop?

It seems bizarre that he would do it. I’m sorry but it’s not as dignified as his other incomes that’s all.

It's extremely undignified in my view to judge other's revenues and income. That for me is a 'sin' far worse than Graham Norton partnering with a reputable financial services organisation.

Are you Graham Norton's agent?!

Iqndt · 28/04/2026 16:25

Not many people would turn down a quick to do well paid job.

If someone’s willing to pay him a good few grand, why not? I presume he pays his taxes and isn’t dodging them so 🤷

RawBloomers · 28/04/2026 16:21

But I hate to see it when they don’t need to do it

This really stood out to me, OP. Why do you hate to see it? What is it about ads that you think is...what? beneath them? sleazy? deceitful?

Q2C4 · 28/04/2026 16:21

I don’t see a problem with this at all as long as he’s paying tax on his advertising income (so benefiting the tax payer).

I wonder this every time I see George Clooney or David Beckham advertising something. It doesn’t bother me but I really do wonder why they do it!

oh lol I posted before I saw this... ha. Didn't take long did it. 🙄

The "and that's entertainment" podcast covered Jet2 using Jess Glynn's song the other week, apparently it's made her millions. I always think she sounds like she's smoked 20 a day. Definitely what you call a lucky break as I doubt her career would have spanned that long and had many more hits.

I didn't know it was her - thought just some random ad song.

I am not whinging about it! 😂

I wondered why Graham Norton has chosen to do this as have many others as evidenced by this thread!

It comes across as greedy to some people (obviously not to you!)

It doesn't come across as "greedy" to me, but that's because my thoughts are not limited to having one job which pays a monthly salary.

There are some actors who take on absolutely anything because they know it's a short career and you make what you can before you get injured, or cancelled, or deemed out of fashion or irrelevant.

Graham Norton may be "worth" 30 million, but in that case, shouldn't David Beckham (who is 'worth' 15 times that of Graham Norton) be told to stop adverts and to stop doing appearances?

ProjectDog · 28/04/2026 16:17

ElenOfTheWays · 28/04/2026 16:01

I'd find it hard to think less of him than I already do.

Me too. I can’t stand him.

XenoBitch · 28/04/2026 16:16

George Clooney did coffee pod ads. Loads of A-listers have done perfume ads.
Work is work, and it adds more to their portfolio.
Plus you have remembered the ad because of who was in it. So it has done its job.

Lostallhistory · 28/04/2026 16:15

They possibly don't need the money or maybe they do , we can't know their financial set up. But appearing on tv whether it's a chat show or advert is their job, they're media people.
Same as multi millionaire actors, why has Tom Hanks done so many films, because it's his job 🤷‍♀️

Saying it's greedy is a bit daft, you could say that any wealthy person needs to stop working when they accrue 'enough' money.

Nah sorry the 'opinions' on this thread are astounding.

"A lucky break"...?

Jess Glynne has sustained a dozen years in a strong career in the music industry...

but remember (and I'm sure you won't) that she had already vocalled on two number 1 records in 2013.

That's two years before Jet2 holidays.

I don't know what "sounding like smoking 20 a day" has to do with anything. If that was a criteria, Dua Lipa would have had no chance.

HoldMyWine · 28/04/2026 16:12

Adverts pay well, are easy work and they get residuals each time they are played. Why wouldn’t they do them?

OvernightBloats · 28/04/2026 16:12

JacquesHarlow · 28/04/2026 16:07

I also wondered why Graham Norton is doing adverts. He didn't seem to be the type to want to go this route of making money. He must be minted. He is not short of work.

Jamie Dimon (CEO , JP MorganChase) is worth about 2 billion USD.

Should he step down? Surely 2 billion is enough?

Should he only take his 36 million dollar salary, and not take stock options as that's greedy?

If Sydney Sweeney is in 3 or 4 Hollywood movies a year, should she limit herself to just those, and not do ads either, just in case @OvernightBloats from Mumsnet decides she's "earned enough" and is in danger of overexposure?

Honestly, nothing like having a whinge is there. Hint - it's not going to make you richer.

I am not whinging about it! 😂

I always think she sounds like a demented sheep. 😂

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 28/04/2026 16:09

Why does it matter? He (or any other celebrity) gets offered a job, they can take it or leave it as they choose.

Same if someone is paid to have their music in an ad.
