AIBU to think it was rude they kept my misdelivered parcel?

Was expecting a parcel on Saturday. (Was a small package, in a padded envelope so could easily fit through letterbox, no signature required)

Didn’t get delivered. So I checked the tracking details online Sunday evening. Tracking details said it had been delivered at 09:30am Saturday. It had a photo of the delivery person handing it over. All you can see in the photo is the package, someone’s shoes and their driveway. Which had a particular unique pattern of paving.

It wasn’t my shoes, or my driveway.

I walked up and down my street trying the find the driveway. Found it. About 8 houses down.

Knocked on the door and luckily they answered. I said “Oh I’m just wondering if you have a parcel for number 60 please”. They said yes, and gave it me. No “sorry I was going to bring it round/post it through your letter box”.

I understand people are busy but they had my parcel for 30+ hours. I would have had no idea they had it unless I went out looking at everyone’s driveways.

Was this rude of them?

They took your parcel in as a favour and you’re complaining that they didn’t say sorry for not bringing it round to you sooner? Entitled much?!

nopeandnopeandnope · 28/04/2026 19:00

We have post delivered to us occasionally for people who have the same address but different village. I always drop it over to them and they do the same. Sometimes postie delivers wrong mail in our Road. I just drop it to right address when out and about. To me this is the right thing to do .

Papster · 28/04/2026 18:59

I would have come and knocked on your door.
It’s 8 doors, not the far side of town.

Calliopespa · 28/04/2026 18:58

I had this happen. It was quite a large bag of clothing worth about 200.

When it didn't turn up, I tracked it down (which was quite a task) to someone nearby and, when I turned up, they gave me a bollocking that it had been "taking up space" in their house the last few days and why didn't I come sooner. Took a lot of restraint not to ask if they were in fact disappointed they couldn't keep it, given it had my name and address clearly on it! So at least you didn't get snapped at for them not having told you!

Absolutely your responsibility to pick up a parcel delivered to a neighbour. Rude to expect them to bring it unless you’re pals

She didn't know where it was.

Cloudtime · 28/04/2026 18:54

You’re very unreasonable . I do not read the address on every parcel passed to me at the door and I doubt that’s unusual .
It wasn’t only less than a day and a half , it was also at the weekend . Most people have lots to do , are often in and out the house and re delivering someone else’s parcel is unlikely a priority .
If it has been wrongly delivered to me , I may not have even noticed it wasn’t for me at that point .

Surely it’s a bit strange to leave a card through the correct houses door, but then leave the envelope 8 houses down. An envelope that did not require a signature and can fit in the same letterbox that the card was posted through.

Yeah, okay everyone, guilty!!! Maybe it’s just me. Happy to be unreasonable here.

I don't understand why you keep repeating this....the parcel was tracked. You know this because you used the tracking to find it.

This means that the postie needed to record proof of delivery - so they couldn't just post it through your letterbox.

They likely would have knocked your door and then when you didn't answer they would have had three choices:

a) leave it in a 'safe place' and take a photo - they didn't do this, presumably because they could not identify a suitable 'safe' spot
b) take it back to the sorting office so that you could either collect or arrange redelivery and leave you a card
c) find a neighbour willing to take the parcel in for you - which they did, they may have even knocked on several doors to find someone who was in.

Yes, they made a mistake not leaving a card but FGS how obtuse do you have to be to keep banging on about it fitting through the letterbox when it was tracked, then have the temerity to accuse a neighbour who kindly took it in of being rude for not immediately delivering it to you🙄

Given it was tracked they may have thought it was important and didn't want to just pop it through your door so that they could make sure that you got it and couldn't accuse them of not delivering it

justneedgoodsleep · 28/04/2026 18:47

Sounds like a massive misunderstanding here.

postie probably made a mistake and posted it to the wrong house

neighbour accepted the parcel thinking it needs to be handed over to a person and you’re not in. They’re thinking they did you a favour (they didn’t refuse the small package because most people prefer not to have to trek all the way to delivery unit to collect parcel or did not want to have the item returned to sender) bare in mind that neighbour has no idea of the package’s delivery service.

you thinking neighbour is rude for keeping your parcel cause you can see the info that they can’t.

I can see why you’re annoyed but I think it’s directed wrongly to your neighbour.

Northernladdette · 28/04/2026 18:46

I’ll take parcels in for my neighbours but they have to collect them as I will assume they have been left a card telling them I have it.
In this instance I don’t understand why it wasn’t put through the letterbox of OP.
YABU 😣

CynthiaRothrock · 28/04/2026 18:46

A friend sent me a birthday gift a few years ago, she got.my house number mixed up instead of 123 she sent it to 321. I went round and knocked 30 mins after I got the delivery notification.when I enquired if she had taken a parcel in my name she closed the door on me and came back with a dirty wrapper, a flattened box and my open gift in her hand! Not only had she opened it, she put it on fucking display! And put the box and wrapper in the bin. She had sug them.out covered in fucking bin juice! That was rude!

Arlanymor · 28/04/2026 17:51

Maybe the Royal Mail should offer a Veruca Salt delivery service...

Or Violet Elizabeth Bott!

AllTheChaos · 28/04/2026 18:44

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 21:06

It wasn’t my neighbours “fault”.

It was the fault of Royal Mail misdelivering.

But thought it was rude of the neighbour not to take 20 seconds out of their day and pop it through my letterbox.

So because you are able bodied and have spare time, everyone else must be the same too? I would (a) have assumed it couldn’t be delivered (not every property has a letterbox); and (b) expected the delivery service to notify you, and for you to
collect. I have Parkinson’s and walking 8 doors down isn’t always doable. I’m not sending my autistic tweenager to do it either! When I was younger and not ill I’d have been working 14 hour days even at home and not had time, or been stuck with a baby I couldn’t leave the house with easily at all, so no, I’d not have been delivering it then, either.!

usedtobeaylis · 28/04/2026 18:33

It's not their problem. They took it in for you and would have expected you to collect it. Probably at some point they would have brought it along to you. How are they supposed to know when you get home? Do you think they're sitting watching for you, or that they're going to traipse up and down the street to catch you home? YABVU.

Foreverautumnagain · 28/04/2026 18:31

Don't listen to these rude responses! I know someone who kept any parcels misdelivered and if no-one claimed them they were very happy! Dodgy as f!!

Tuesdayschild50 · 28/04/2026 18:27

May of just kept slipping there mind people are busy kids work etc .. with it being small easy to forget.
I don't take any packages in for anyone and they don't take mine .. don't like my next door neighbours 🤣😂

BeaTwix · 28/04/2026 18:27

At least they gave it to you! Someone once accepted a parcel for me (flowers) and refused to hand it over when I went round to collect it (I could see the flowers in a vase in their living room from the front door).

Company it was ordered from were hopeless as were the courier company.

I never recommend that online florist or use them myself as a result.

Randomlygeneratedname · 28/04/2026 18:23

They may have had other things delivered at the same time or just chucked it on the side then later looked and realised but it was too late to pop round with it. Then the next day rolls around probably forgotten about tiny envelope on the side. Or keep looking at it 'I must drop that round', phone rings, kids start playing up, fire alarm goes off, just gets pushed to back of mind.

pouletvous · 28/04/2026 18:20

This is such a non problem OP

get a life. Honestly, havent you anything better to think about?

godmum56 · 28/04/2026 18:16

Maized · 27/04/2026 18:57

Your parcel is not your neighbours responsibility. That sits with you, the company you ordered from and the delivery company. If my parcel is misdelivered I report it, see if I can fetch it and if not tell the company so I can get another sent or a refund. The company will then have to claim the money back from the delivery company they used.

this.

DripDripAprilshower · 28/04/2026 18:13

Did you write them a thank you note for looking after your delivery?

If not - you are the rude one!

User7435977 · 28/04/2026 18:13

We get loads of parcels. Sometimes they are just chucked on the doorstep and sometimes the courier knocks. I definitely don’t check who they are for.

Gingercar · 28/04/2026 18:12

Posted twice by accident

Gingercar · 28/04/2026 18:12

Personally I’d drop it at my neighbours. It’s so common for parcels to be wrongly delivered nowadays. But only when I got a chance, so it may well be a day or two later.
I thought that they had kept the parcel for themselves from the title, which they hadn’t.
