AIBU to think it was rude they kept my misdelivered parcel?

Was expecting a parcel on Saturday. (Was a small package, in a padded envelope so could easily fit through letterbox, no signature required)

Didn’t get delivered. So I checked the tracking details online Sunday evening. Tracking details said it had been delivered at 09:30am Saturday. It had a photo of the delivery person handing it over. All you can see in the photo is the package, someone’s shoes and their driveway. Which had a particular unique pattern of paving.

It wasn’t my shoes, or my driveway.

I walked up and down my street trying the find the driveway. Found it. About 8 houses down.

Knocked on the door and luckily they answered. I said “Oh I’m just wondering if you have a parcel for number 60 please”. They said yes, and gave it me. No “sorry I was going to bring it round/post it through your letter box”.

I understand people are busy but they had my parcel for 30+ hours. I would have had no idea they had it unless I went out looking at everyone’s driveways.

Was this rude of them?

Obviously it couldn't just be put through the letterbox if a pic had to be taken. What if the neighbours put it through the door and you then complained you hadn't got it or the dog ate it? If i was handed in something common sense to me would be to wait for someone to take it from my hand, properly. I wouldn't walk down and shove it through the letterbox. It's not the same as a letter posted through the wrong letterbox.

This is the issue. OP thinks it was wrongly delivered. Neighbours thought it was handed to them for safekeeping.

AnnieLummox · 29/04/2026 07:29

This thread is hilarious!! 🤣 AND ridiculous!! I can’t believe it’s made it to 14 pages!!

To be fair, most of that is OP stamping her feet and shouting “But I didn’t know they’d got it!! How was I supposed to know? Why didn’t they just drop everything to hand deliver it to meeeee?!”

Bamboozledbylife · 29/04/2026 07:15

So unreasonable. It's your parcel go and find it. If you'd not turned up after 2/3 days I might wander down and knock assuming you had no notification, but not after 1 day. You're being precious.

Oh well, in for a penny! 😂

Yep, I really wouldn’t have given it any thought, life is busy, and would have given it several days until I became postie myself. Regardless to shape, size, colour. Well, I may try sooner if large as it’d be in my way!

@FrostedCandyAngel I really hope your neighbour doesn’t read this and realise it’s about them!

dcthatsme · 29/04/2026 07:06

It's on the delivery company to let you know it's there and for you to collect it. Your neighbour was probably assuming you were coming over. Did you thank them for taking it in for you? Sounds like you need a neighbours' WhatsApp group. I live in London and it's lovely to actually know the names of neighbours. We message about stuff like deliveries and ask for recommendations for electricians etc. It makes living in an anonymous city a lot more enjoyable.

Londonrach1 · 29/04/2026 06:55

Your parcel you collect it. Yabu

I take parcels in for neighbours all the time as it's a block of flats and I'm the only one not working and home all day.

I never take the parcels to them, I wait for them to come to me. I already did them the favour of taking it in, I'm not playing a guessing game as to when they'll be home and knocking several times.

You got your package, say thanks and don't accuse people helping you of being rude.

So the option is they could have said they were not accepting it and send it back would this have been better?

That seems unlikely as a signature wasn’t required and it easily fit in the letterbox.
if I were the neighbour I’d probably question why they don’t just deliver to correct address.
our couriers often post thru the door or even leave by the door.

Snooks1971 · 27/04/2026 18:45

Ok! Not a NDN then! 8 houses down or up your road, over the road or on your side means checking with a lot of neighbours when you don’t know where it’s been delivered…being pedantic then that’s up to 32 houses (neighbours) to knock and check.

Totally agree, I only know the neighbors next door and maybe one other, no clue who lives 8 doors away!

I didn’t get a card through my door though.

If the postie was able to post a card through my door, he/she would have been able to post the enveloped parcel through my door.

But the neighbours don't know you didn't get a card through the door. And they can't really be expected to think through all the logistics of whether it fits in a letter box or not and why it was left there. They probably assumed (or were told) the delivery was because you were out, and gave it no more thought. It wasn't the main event of their day . Especially if it's the type of delivery where they take a photo for tracking as those wouldn't normally be posted through a letter box would they? It's not comparable to a mis delivered letter. If they know a photo was taken they may have assumed the tracking would also tell you the house number it was left at. Letters don't usually have photos and tracking.

Chickadee001 · 29/04/2026 06:15

At least they kept it for you, just be grateful! You don't know them or their routine, they may have had 101 things to do or a sick relative to deal with which prevented them brinig it to you!

Tillow4ever · 29/04/2026 05:43

Maybe your neighbour didn’t want to go round, find you weren’t home, then have the dilemma of do they put it through your letterbox or not. Because some people will accuse someone else of stealing their parcel - so if you hand it to them, you know for certain they’ve received it.

As for not spotting the name/house number - maybe they were expecting a parcel themselves so didn’t pay attention to the label? I’ve had that before (although it had our address on, it then had a completely different name).

Your anger is misplaced. You should be cross with RM for delivering to the wrong house if the parcel was clearly labelled correctly.

user1492757084 · 29/04/2026 04:43

If I were the neighbour I would have said - This is not my address, sorry, it is a few houses down - then gone back to my gardening.

If the Postie had said - I couldn't fit this small parcel into no. 60's letter box, would you mind taking it on their behalf. Or I can take it back to the P.O.? And I would have taken it and resolved to deliver it to you over the weekend.

Postie took a picture of the driveway so you could track down your parcel rather than waiting to visit the P.O. on Monday.

I am surprised that a small sentence was not on the tracking information stating exactly which address the Postie had left your parcel. Maybe that would be opening the Postie up to being repremanded for not strictly delivering the parcel, or taking it back to P.O.

FernsInValley · 29/04/2026 04:39

Depending on what is going on in my own life as to when I dropped it off, but chances are it would be that same day. I know people may be anxiously waiting for it. I'd probably have realized before accepting it that it was not for our house though. But having chronic illness means no guarantees.

Ineffable23 · 29/04/2026 04:25

I think the situation here is that it may very well be that your neighbours were being unreasonable but at the 30 hour mark I think they're still Schrödinger's neighbour: both potentially reasonable and potentially inconsiderate.

I get parcels delivered for the neighbours all the time. I don't give much thought to it at all, especially not at to the size of the parcel etc. Any it may have been a busy weekend. I completely agree that the considerate thing to do would be drop the parcel over but I reckon you've got to give them a bit north of 48 hours before you assume they were being inconsiderate. I don't think they have a duty to immediately stop what they're doing and drop it over.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 29/04/2026 03:50

I never take in deliveries for anyone. If the people concerned are not in. Then it's is is their problem. Same with post.
Just return it to sender

Also on the small estate where l live several moths back, several.parcels were left with new neighbours who swore bilind they had not taken them in. Delivery company denied having a record of this.

This sort of thing does happen.

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 29/04/2026 02:49

Tracked delivery needs to take a photo when it's delivered.

Maybe the postie has been told not to post it through the letterbox, and to ensure it's handed to a person?

Either way, your beef is with the Delivery Office, and not with your neighbours.

TwoBagsOfCompost · 29/04/2026 02:36

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 20:59

Surely with common sense you’d think if a courier can post a slip through my letterbox they can also post the actual enveloped package through my letterbox. It didn’t require a signature upon delivery.

Post a slip through my door but leve the envelope 8 houses down.

Can’t believe it’s just me that thinks this is crazy!

Can’t believe it’s just me that thinks this is crazy!

OK but you asked if YABU and you've then posted several times making the same argument again and persistently expressing surprise. That makes the thread slightly pointless.

ScreentimeInTheMeantime · 28/04/2026 23:13

It’s a bit odd to accept a parcel for the wrong address so perhaps someone a bit hapless (teenager, visitor, cleaner?) took it in. Otherwise why not say, “that’s not for me”? No one particularly wants other people’s post sitting in their hallway.

A parcel could easily get overlooked at my house for 30 hours (i.e. a day), especially if we were out at work when it came. Sometimes we have a few parcels and don’t immediately open them when busy.

Your neighbour may also have been thinking “I must get around to dropping off that parcel” but slightly lost track of time.

I don’t think you can assume it’s rude - I would let it go.

This has happened to me a few times, where a courier has delivered me a parcel that was for another address. It’s always in the middle of the day when I’m working from home, and usually busy in the middle of something, or on a call. Since I get regular parcels anyway, I don’t stop and inspect the address of every one before taking them in! I assume that the courier knows where they should be delivering it!

Also, they don’t always knock on the door. I’ve had someone else’s parcel dumped in my bin before. I only discovered it by chance!

Agree that 30 hours isn’t long at all for redelivering it. I’m working during the day and often out in the evening. I’ll take it round when it’s convenient for me.

Royal Mail are horrendous in my area. I’ve received another houses letters on 3 separate occasions. And I’ve always popped straight out to post it through the door.

This is the first time it’s happened where my post has gone elsewhere.

But yes this thread has opened my eyes that not everyone would do the same as I.

lesson learnt 🤣

I’m just way too busy to think about this. By the time we’ve got the kids to bed and cleaned up dinner and got their things ready for the next nights training/dinner plan, it’s 10 pm and we have washing to fold, plants to water, things to do for our kids sports clubs and nursery, work I said I’d send that night, I’ve already skipped the gym as too much on, and if I get to bed by midnight it’s a good day. Give people a break with your judging, it takes me a week to collect my own parcels.
