AIBU to think it was rude they kept my misdelivered parcel?

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 18:33

Was expecting a parcel on Saturday. (Was a small package, in a padded envelope so could easily fit through letterbox, no signature required)

Didn’t get delivered. So I checked the tracking details online Sunday evening. Tracking details said it had been delivered at 09:30am Saturday. It had a photo of the delivery person handing it over. All you can see in the photo is the package, someone’s shoes and their driveway. Which had a particular unique pattern of paving.

It wasn’t my shoes, or my driveway.

I walked up and down my street trying the find the driveway. Found it. About 8 houses down.

Knocked on the door and luckily they answered. I said “Oh I’m just wondering if you have a parcel for number 60 please”. They said yes, and gave it me. No “sorry I was going to bring it round/post it through your letter box”.

I understand people are busy but they had my parcel for 30+ hours. I would have had no idea they had it unless I went out looking at everyone’s driveways.

Was this rude of them?

@UhOhRatPoo Because the OP has made it abundantly clear that her perception of her neighbours is the only correct one and now that people have disagreed with her, has decided that she is some sort of heroic martyr to the allegedly un-MN quality of neighbourliness. It's quite funny when someone lacks self awareness to that extent.

Perhaps in future you could use the option whereby you ask one of your neighbours who you like and trust to take in parcels for you

I dont need anyone to take in parcels for me. I would rather Royal Mail deliver it to the correct house. I was in my kitchen at the front of the house at 09:30 when it was delivered 8 doors down.

If I know I’m not going to be in when due a delivery I order it to a pick up point.

I think people are assuming I’m blaming the neighbours for a misdelivery. I am not at all. That is ALL on Royal Mail and I emailed to complain before I event went out to look for the house.

My thread was about my “neighbours”. Not Royal Mai. I KNOW that Royal Mail are at fault.

My AIBU was about the neighbours realising the parcel was for me and could have quite easily walked 20 seconds to my house to post it. Because that’s what I do when I receive someone else’s post on the street in ERROR. My viewpoint hasn’t changed.

Being neighbourly isn’t very popular on Mumsnet. And everyone is either unable to walk 20 seconds down the street or they are so so so busy with kids pets, washing up etc. 🤣🤣

Still happy to be called Unreasonable though. I will be unreasonable and proud.

Have a great week everyone.

Why can you not accept that your neighbours did NOT KNOW it had been delivered to them IN ERROR?

I didn’t get a card through my door though.

If the postie was able to post a card through my door, he/she would have been able to post the enveloped parcel through my door.

So that's their fault too?

Perhaps in future you could use the option whereby you ask one of your neighbours who you like and trust to take in parcels for you, rather than the (clearly untrustworthy) people who did you a favour by kindly agreeing to accept your delivery for you. Then put the acceptable address on your delivery details.

I am sorry, I didn’t realise that, @UhOhRatPoo - thank you for telling me. I apologise, @AnnieLummox.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/04/2026 12:36

I don’t think @FrostedCandyAngel said the parcel had been opened, @AnnieLummox.

@FrostedCandyAngel - you don’t seem to have taken on board what so many people have tried to tell you - your neighbours had NO way of knowing that the postie hadn’t put a card through your door, so it was entirely reasonable of them to wait for you to come and collect the parcel!

It was NOT their fault that a card wasn’t left, nor was it their fault that you had to search for the right house to retrieve your parcel - yet you have started a thread calling them rude, and implying they were deliberately keeping your parcel. And you still cannot see that you are being unreasonable.

@AnnieLummox was not responding to OP, she was responding to a story posted by @Forestgreenblue about a parcel being opened.

@Forestgreenblue I agree with @AnnieLummox - it’s very easy to open a parcel without reading the label first, especially if you order a lot of things or are expecting something else. Really surprised that your first thought was malicious intent. Do you always automatically think the worst of people? That’s no way to live

It's like the OP thinks the neighbours will have had the time or inclination to stop and actually consider whether or not a card will have been left, on the basis that it's a small parcel that fits through the letterbox. Who has time to give that much thought to an apparently simple situation? The same goes for her bonkers notion that they should have checked the name and address and mentioned it to the courier before they left

AnnieLummox · 29/04/2026 12:20

Isn’t it rather more likely they just opened it without looking at the label and then thought, “Oh shit - it’s for next door” and taped it back up?

Forestgreenblue · 29/04/2026 11:52

We had this recently with our neighbour! Next door I will add!

Parcel delivered. We posted on all the local neighbourhood groups if anyone had taken it in. No response.

Worked out the next day it was their door from the delivery photo - they have a very distinct difference to their door surround compared to the rest of the estate

So made us wonder why would you not have dropped it round when we are literally next door!!

Went round to collect and they very sheepishly gave us our package

To our horror they had also opened it and re-taped the box shut!!!

It was a door sign, personalised with our address so of no use at all to them but I did wonder if it had been something else if they may have attempted to claim it

Sparkysmum · 29/04/2026 11:19

The courier is unlikely to return to a house 8 doors back up to leave a note. The courier has probably gone to the wrong door.
The person accepting it should not have taken it especially if they do not know the op. Depends what the courier said to them.
In this instance I do think the neighbour could have brought it round.

HaveYouFedTheFish · 29/04/2026 11:04

That's the delivery service's fault, not the people stuck with your delivery. There are lots of reasons why someone might not prioritise redelivering your padded envelope.

Whatthefork1 · 29/04/2026 10:58

They probably assumed that you knew where it had been delivered and would therefore go and collect it.
I have no issue with my neighbours parcels being delivered to my home as I am here most the time as I WFH. But I am not going out of my way to take the parcel round to them, it is on them to collect it.

Loujay2 · 29/04/2026 10:55

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 18:55

I had no idea where it was!

I was left no slip. No text message. Nothing.

I had to search up and down the street looking at peoples driveways that matched the photo on the tracking details.

I know youve been inconvenienced but that's not your neighbours fault. I'm ill and can't go out much so definately wouldn't go back and fore trying to give a parcel back to a neighbour, they dont know when you're home also, you don't know their circumstances, if you are that annoyed complain to the courier its their fault nothing to do with anyone else.

Onmytod24 · 29/04/2026 10:01

Complain to the company that delivered it to the wrong house not to the people who looked after your parcel till you came to collect it

Ginnnny · 29/04/2026 09:47

neilyoungismyhero · 28/04/2026 18:55

She didn't know where it was.

She found it 8 houses down and collected it…

MauveExpert · 29/04/2026 09:32

You sound really entitled. Why on earth should they drop what they are doing and immediately pop round with your package?
They could have forgotten about it too. Your package will not be their top priority in life.
They likely assumed you’d had a calling card put through your door and collect it when you could- yes I know you didn’t but how are they to know that?

It sounds like ordering online might not be for you. Or pay extra for special delivery

MuminMama · 29/04/2026 09:17

Erm I think you’re meant to get a card and go pick it up. I’d take it round eventually when I was not busy though, after a few days

Joloman74 · 29/04/2026 09:15

They were kind enough to take it in for you, why should they then have to take on delivery of it to you at your address? Most delivery companies will tell you where it is by leaving a card, then it's your responsibility to go and pick it up! You sound very entitled and if I was your neighbour I wouldn't take in a parcel again for you!

CocoaTea · 29/04/2026 09:11

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 19:00

Because they live 8 houses down from me.

The parcel was a small envelope that can fit through any letterbox. It had my full correct address on.

I’d have thought the neighbourly thing to do would be to quickly nip down and post it through my letter box.

It’s what I do. If I get posted a letter or something that fits through a letter box in error I will always take it round.

But then again this is Mumsnet where being nice to neighbours doesn’t exist.

@FrostedCandyAngel

What a weird take; to question the neighbour’s niceness.

The fault is with the delivery driver / company who delivered the parcel to the wrong address and didn’t leave you a slip.

I am not sure why you think the neighbour was mean - they are not a delivery company. Of course you should go and look for your own parcel.

Do you work? I take parcels in for next door but I also work 50-60 hours a week with a 90 min commute on office days and have 2 school aged kids - there is no way I am coming home and re-delivering parcels that have nothing to do with me. On a weekend maybe but even then I’d breach your 30 hours rule.

You sound very entitled.

Your issue is with the delivery company not your neighbour.

That is the fault of the delivery company. You need to take it up with them.

Your neighbour under no obligation or contract to deliver anything to you.

FrostedCandyAngel · 27/04/2026 20:00

Imagine Royal Mail delivering my parcel 8 houses down from me. To then post a red slip through my letterbox which the parcel could have fit through 🤣

It doesn’t make sense.

What annoyed me is that I believe the neighbour should have looked at the name and address and then said to the courier “Oh this is the wrong house. They’re further down!” Or they could have just walked 20 seconds to my house to pop it in my letter box.

Just baffling.

Why would the neighbour even bother to check the name and address on the parcel while the courier was still there? I'd have taken it and then, when I'd closed the door, opened it because who checks every single packet or parcel they receive to check it's definitely for them before the courier leaves? It's like you're determined to do some mental gymnastics in order to paint your neighbours as unreasonable.

Horsepoor · 29/04/2026 09:03

They’re not responsible for your package and if anything you were rude not to thank them for taking it in. The usual and normal thing to expect is that you’d been left a card. They had no way to know you hadn’t. You have no idea why they didn’t bring it round and 30 hours is no time at all. If anything they were likely annoyed you didn’t show up sooner! You’ve truly got the wrong end of the stick here.

thestudio · 29/04/2026 08:25

Not necessarily rude - people have very busy lives and 30 hours is not long at all. They were probably themselves pissed off that they'd have to try and find out whose parcel it was, another bloody thing to think about.

Also, they may well have assumed that you'd got a note to say 'your parcel is at number 9' and been annoyed that it had taken you 30 hours to pick it up.

I think this is a really good lesson in looking at things from the other POV

KmcK87 · 29/04/2026 08:17

No I’m not chasing my neighbours down for their parcels, they can come to me when they’re home. YABU
