AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · 25/04/2026 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

Up to you what you drink and when! DP can mind his own business!

Whatthefork1 · 26/04/2026 20:28

I mean it’s totally up to you, assuming you’re a grown adult.
but personally no I wouldn’t have alcohol with breakfast unless I was in an airport (we all know there’s different rules there). And I would also find it a bit odd if my DH had a pint with his brekky at that time in the morning too, i would question if he was okay.

Padz12 · 26/04/2026 20:27

Good for you! Hope you enjoy it!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 26/04/2026 20:26

A pint of cider first thing is quite hard-core, but each to their own, it's not as if you're at it every morning/all day. I'd feel a bit crap by the afternoon, but I think I'm quite sensitive to alcohol these days! I need a nap after a couple of units and there's nearly 3 in each pint of cider and 2.5 in a Guinness. I don't mind a mimosa at brealfast, but that's half a small glass, so barely there - each to their own, it's you not me. It's also you not your husband so he can't really comment, you feel you've started your day well, don't let him control you or put you off socialising however you want

Scottsy200 · 26/04/2026 20:15

Is your DP always such a fun sponge 🤣

notacooldad · 26/04/2026 19:59

I think its good to do something out of routine now and again!

I would assume anyone drinking alcohol at 9.30am is an alcoholic, whether it's a pint or a mimosa. It's far too early for a pint.
People have pints at airports, earlier than 09.30.

Why would anyone having a one off pint care about someone they will probably never see again, or indeed notice.
Personally I wouldn't because I get woozy quickly but if my friend has a pint, no problem!

@Malinia

why, exactly? A pint is a pint irrespective of the time of day. It doesn’t magically contain more alcoholic units if consumed at 9am compared to 9pm

user2848502016 · 26/04/2026 10:38

As a one off it’s fine

MandyMotherOfBrian · 25/04/2026 19:09

Could have done, about ten to fifteen years ago. Now though, you’d have to add in a punch up too.

Maybe not then!

SpryTaupeTurtle · 26/04/2026 08:49

LemonTyger · 25/04/2026 16:37

It definitely isn’t 😂

OP, I would be concerned for a friend or relative doing this unless it was some sort of special occasion/ celebration breakfast. I can understand why your husband was concerned and probably concerned you might be a secret drinker/ high functioning alcoholic. I’m not saying you are, but it’s totally understandable he’s concerned, drinking with breakfast is an odd thing to do!

Come on. One pint with breakfast does not make someone a high functioning alcoholic. As for secret drinker. She told him she had the pint. Nothing secret about it

SpryTaupeTurtle · 26/04/2026 08:46

I suppose people dislike places for all sorts of reasons.

But personally, I avoid Wetherspoons like the plague because:

  1. The food is absolutely shite; and
  2. Being around people drinking pints with their breakfast isn’t my thing. It’s the kind of environment I like to avoid.

Why does that make me look like a knob?

The food is not absolutely shite. I don't like every single thing on a Wetherspoons menu but to write off everything as "shite" is ridiculous. Also. Not everyone sits drinking pints with their breakfast

ArtAngel · 25/04/2026 20:32

Who gives a toss whether it is unusual / abnormal / not hear anyone else fancies, if you felt like a pint of Guinness with your breakfast and you enjoyed it, Cheers!

The fact that your DH thought it out of character proves that you are not a habitual breakfast binge drinker. I think the pursed lipped can relax.

Only on Mumsnet would there be a suggestion that someone who has a very rare drink at breakfast time could be perceived as being a secret drinker or high functioning alcoholic 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I doubt the OP feels it now but in time I hope she will be grateful that someone has picked up on her excessive and frankly dangerous levels of alcohol consumption. I hope this thread proves to be just the gin&tonic to make her face up to the fact that she is clearly a raging alcoholic.

SpryTaupeTurtle · 25/04/2026 20:15

I live in a town where there are only a couple of other pub options than Wetherspoons. There are also some Wetherspoons which aren't "chavvy". The one on Lothian Road in Edinburgh is spectacular and there are some really nice ones dotted around the UK.

My local one looks like a school dinner hall but I certainly wouldn't say everyone who goes in them are "chavs"

I've been to the Mile Castle in Newcastle a few times. It looks great after the refurb and today my mum and I tried to get into the counting house in Glasgow but it was completely mobbed. Busier than I have ever seen it

For me. I tend to go to Spoons more when I'm away from home and want to try and keep to a budget.

Spoons was so busy today my mum and I went somewhere else. It was 16 quid for two glasses of wine - if it had been less busy we would have got the same for around 9 quid. I do also try and support local pubs but for some people money is a factor

YANBU as long as not all of the time! I’d happily have champagne or prosecco with breakfast as a treat so this is no different

Oh, yes, I agree, it’s just I don’t like the taste of beer and I like Champagne a lot. But it’s the same principle.

The sun is always above the yardarm somewhere in the world! Cheers! 🥂

Bucks Fizz or Mimosas are absolutely my favourite with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for special occasion breakfasts. Maybe I’m an alcoholic, if so, I’m past caring.

Fair enough.

I don't see that as any different to someone drinking a pint at that time of the morning, even though I've never been a daytime drinker.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/04/2026 19:41

JipJup · 25/04/2026 19:14

I do too.

But check out Mumsnet on Christmas Eve, and so many are looking forward to alcohol with breakfast the next day.

I do think drinking alcohol at 9.30 in the morning is questionable BUT I know I have my own triggers around this because of addiction issues in my immediate family. So I can’t give an unbiased view.

Oh come on let's face it.

If Tim Martin was the founder of the Ivy, not so many MNetters would have a problem with that.

It's because Spoons is considered 'chavvy' by a lot of wannabees who can't admit that, otherwise they'd look like a knob.

So they got with the TM angle instead.

They?

I’m talking about why I won’t go there.

If it helps, I won’t go to the Ivy either. My son worked there when he was at university; the food wasn’t worth what it cost, even with his discount.

Nothing to do with snobbery whatsoever; I just disagree vehemently with TM’s ‘principles’. He didn’t exactly cover himself with glory during the pandemic either.

JipJup · 25/04/2026 19:12

Vivi0 · 25/04/2026 19:06

Is there something wrong with finding a place chavvy and wanting to avoid it?

I’m not seeing the problem.

Yes.

Only knobs look down on people and places and call them chavvy.

I can understand now why you assumed you are one.

@Growlybear83 " I very very rarely drink alcohol (maybe three or four times a year) and just about the only time I do is if I’m having breakfast at weatherspoon’s "

I feel like I'm missing out on something. Can we start a fry up & pint Mumsnet meet up at Spoons.

Did you accidentally leave 'chavvy' off your list?

If not and you don't think Spoons customers are chavvy, why have you assumed that makes you look like a knob?

Either you didn't read my post or I'm missing something completely?
