AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

Personally I find drinking alcohol with breakfast pretty grim, although tbf you’d probably need something strong to wash down the horrible microwaved slop served up in Wetherspoons.

Breakfast and Guinness, that’s a New Year’s Day tradition. The new year looks much brighter.

sashh · 27/04/2026 04:37

I've only ever had champagne with breakfast. I was flying home from Australia so the rules certainly didn't apply.

I used to live in Oxford, on May Day the pubs all opened for breakfast at 8.00am.

liveforsummer · 27/04/2026 03:09

Surely it’s a good thing that it’s out of character?!. Fine occasionally, every morning would be another matter

Sounds like a couple of All Inclusive Hotels l have visited in the Caribbean over the years.

Get a drink 24 hours a day Very popular at breakfast. Hair of the dog etc.

@Growlybear83 " I very very rarely drink alcohol (maybe three or four times a year) and just about the only time I do is if I’m having breakfast at weatherspoon’s "

I feel like I'm missing out on something. Can we start a fry up & pint Mumsnet meet up at Spoons.

Ooh, yes please!

DS was a few weeks old the first time I took him to a Spoons. I used to live about a three minute walk from one, and I was struggling with feeding myself properly, so went there for food. I had the mixed grill, which they don't do anymore, but I definitely needed the protein.

Spoons is my second favourite breakfast after parkrun (Tim hortons is my fave). Often see people drinking at that time. Usually either old men or groups that are obviously using it as a meeting point before getting a bus or train to a stag/hen/birthday celebration. I'm more annoyed that the government have decided I'd get fat if I have the unlimited hot chocolate at spoons. I don't like tea or coffee.

Last year we went to Belfast on an early flight and at first I felt a bit strange having a pint at 7AM at the airport, but soon got into it (airports have no time zones - even though it was a domestic flight). It's not usual behaviour and I can't see the issue on occasion.

I wondered why they stopped doing the unlimited hot chocolate! Now I know. Bastards!

In Italy this morning the entire Piazza appeared to be on Aperol Spritz or Espresso Martini.

Theslummymummy · 26/04/2026 23:18

Can you not just say the chain? Nothing bad will happen

StarsShiningOnANighttimeSea · 26/04/2026 22:37

If it was a one off and I wasn't planning on drinking any more alcohol for the rest of the day? Sure. I'd happily wash down a cooked breakfast with a pint of cider. I could imagine myself doing that sitting outside on a nice, warm, sunny morning.

Other than the time of day what's so different about alcohol with breakfast over drinking alcohol with any other meal anyway? Is it only when breakfast ticks over to brunch it suddenly becomes more acceptable?

riceuten · 26/04/2026 22:19

Not for me at that time, but I am not going to judge you...

Delphiniumandlupins · 26/04/2026 22:11

I think it would be more of a problem if it wasn't out of character. I wouldn't normally have a pint at 9.30am but might be swayed if I was in 'Spoons.

DoubleDoubleDown · 26/04/2026 21:59

@Ireallywantadoughnut36-- yep Timmy's is TH. I really miss a proper greasy spoon breakfast ( I'm a Brit in Canada). I was interested in what Timmy's serve because one opened up near my mum and I was telling her different things to try but they didn't seem to have and Tim's classics. Last time I came 🏡 I really struggled to find a coffee shop that had cream for coffee.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/04/2026 21:43

“Out of character” isn’t an insult in this context though. He’s just saying it’s not something you’d usually do, I’d have thought?

If he said “well that’s typical” it would be more cause of concern!

I don’t enjoy alcohol in the morning. Ever really. Unless I’ve got a cast iron guarantee of a nap at lunchtime maybe. It makes me feel grotty all day - even just a small amount.

But it’s not a terrible thing to do, especially if, as your DH said, it’s out of character.

Perimenipausalmum · 26/04/2026 21:42

If it's just a once every now and again thing then why not? And your dp is being very unreasonable in judging you! I'd tell him to piss off!

Yabu gross at 9.30am

Unless it’s at an airport of course then it’s fine x

CrayonCritic5 · 26/04/2026 21:35

Looool 😂 Well I guess in some ways it isn’t a great way to start the day, and I assume it IS out of character. So he is correct. The question is more about his tone when speaking to you. If he said it in jest, it’s fine. If he said it with distain or judgement, he’s a .

If I'm observing a stranger I have no idea it's a one off, so my comment stands. I would see someone drinking alcohol at that time and assume they have a huge drink problem. I might well be wrong, but my point was that it's very unusual and highly likely to be indicative of a problem.

I don't think people with a healthy relationship with alcohol drink that early in the day, and yes I know a lot of people on here are saying they do it, but I don't think they have healthy relationships with alcohol either. I think a lot of people have low level drink problems in this country and that it's normalised, and that's what we are seeing on this thread.

Well in Spain you regularly see old timers sat in the fishing village near me with a breakfast beer or a brandy with their morning coffee.

Surprised by so much love for Spoons after the way they treated their staff during the pandemic.

We go to a Spoons at least once a week and i haven't seen any aggressive behaviour in around 10 years

Same, and I go to loads of different ones 😁

It's kind of gross, can't lie.

@Usernamenotav

”gross” lol do you even know the meaning of the word??

A pint of cider first thing is quite hard-core, but each to their own, it's not as if you're at it every morning/all day. I'd feel a bit crap by the afternoon, but I think I'm quite sensitive to alcohol these days! I need a nap after a couple of units and there's nearly 3 in each pint of cider and 2.5 in a Guinness. I don't mind a mimosa at brealfast, but that's half a small glass, so barely there - each to their own, it's you not me. It's also you not your husband so he can't really comment, you feel you've started your day well, don't let him control you or put you off socialising however you want

Her mate had the cider

Why not, it's the weekend. I have Friends staying and I'm very hungover this morning. We will head out for breakfast soon and I'm definitely planning on having at least 2 ceasers ( Canadian version of bloody Mary with clam juice)..yum might even make them double
@BiscuitsCheeseBiscuits I'm intrigued, what do Timmy's in England serve for breakfast?. Can you get a farmer's wrap and a double double?

There aren't many Tim Hortons (hope that's what Timmys means otherwise this sounds nuts!) And they don't have a double double on the menu BUT you can ask for them and they'll make it for you (at least at my nearest). They do have wraps, not sure if theres a farmers, they have muffins with eggs, sausage etx and pancakes on the breakfast menu, plus some odd looking omlettes.

TH wouldn't be my go to for brekky though, we normally want a fry up when hungover in the UK and for that you tend to need a local "caff" or a pub.....
