AIBU to ask what your half of household bills comes to?

What is your half of household bills? Excluding food shopping. Just mortgage/ rent, utilities, council tax, joint insurance or car payments. Assuming you split costs 50/50 with a partner or thereabouts.

I've seen a few content creators talk about this online recently and been surprised how high it is, usually always over £1000 meaning full costs are over £2000 before food.

I'm probably being unreasonable to think that's such a lot given how high costs are at the moment

I’m a single parent and I’m mortgage free, so my bills that aren’t shared with anyone are £685. But one child at uni needing top ups and one child doing driving lessons pretty much doubles this.

Nosleepagain34 · 24/04/2026 16:32

About £600
for water, electricity, council tax, house insurance, broadband. I am mortgage free.
doesn’t include any of the kids costs or any food or vehicle costs. Usually I pay most of this which pisses me off
my car costs about £250-300 a month in insurance tax and diesel I don’t pay this out of the household account.

Walker1178 · 24/04/2026 16:31

We each pay £700 into the joint account which covers rent, council tax, utilities and food. We then pay our own phones and car expenses from our personal accounts, we both own our cars so for insurance, tax and fuel it’s around £100 each that we spend every month

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 24/04/2026 16:30

My share is £2200 but we have huge mortgage repayments.

Strawberries86 · 24/04/2026 16:29

Total - can’t do half as I pay more
mortgage - 1700
overpayment mortgage 150
council tax 260
my car tax/insurance 105
house insurance 30
loan payment 578 ( 9 months left of 2 year home improvement loan
credit card 100
child care/clubs 300
pet insurance 15
phones x 2 60
subscriptions 22

£3320 - I pay £2k of that
But our total take home is £6500.

Girlintheframe · 24/04/2026 16:25

£1760 each including all costs for home, pets, cars and saving. Excluding food

Shardonneigghhh · 24/04/2026 16:22

I live alone with my kids. I pay £1300 which includes
Mortgage
Council tax
Gas
Electric
Water
Wifi
Car insurance
My union and professional registration
Netflix
Phone bills
Home/contents/critical illness insurance
Etc

I try to save too. Usually somewhere between 250 and 500. My daughter's school bus costs £1300 but I pay that annually so not included in monthly but if you add that on then £1400.

Dontknowwhattocall13893 · 24/04/2026 16:21

1350 ish for my half
We earn pretty much bang on the same
Biggest bills are
Mortgage 1070
Nursery average 1000 with tax free childcare (in Scotland so no funded hours till 3)

ReadingCrimeFiction · 24/04/2026 16:19

£2000 doesn't seem excessive at all. Our mortgage is £1700 alone and its not a big or expensive house. Council tax in Surrey is high - I think around £185 a month for us. We dont have car repayments but insurance is around £70 for 2 cars, plus another £100 per month petrol.

Other insurance- life, house, etc - around £400.

Broadband/phone etc easy £170.

I am not sure on other utilities but I would guess around £250 per month.

£180 for a cleaner.

Isekaied · 24/04/2026 16:14

Don't know

Husband pays utilities.

I only mortgage and council tax and broadband-

£780, approx £330 and £34

Life insurance approx £80.

I pay my own car bills- bought outright- car tax£220. Mot etc

House insurance. Roadside assistance

And other bits and pieces.

Auroraloves · 24/04/2026 16:14

Just under £600 mortgage bills etc

Catza · 24/04/2026 16:13

House including mortgage, insurance, council tax, utilities, internet etc. comes to about £1400
Car (bought for cash) is £75 a month in tax and insurance.
So half of that is about £750

House is not massive and is in a cheap-ish area in SW. I don't know where you live that it sounds high to you. I'd say it's on a lower end. Our previous house in the city was £2400 per month including bills. Again, just a bog standard end of terrace in not overly nice "burbs". Not London. We couldn't afford to live in London since 2021

Teenagerantruns · 24/04/2026 16:12

£600 a month, rent, energy, water, council tax, tv licence, insurance and subscriptions.
We pay our own phones, no car anymore.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/04/2026 16:12

Then also we've got expenses that come out of our own accounts like paying for DD1 at university, credit card repayments, travel costs (about £300 a month each, not insignificant) savings and so on. Probably more like £5k a month all told (£2.5k each)

jumpingjohnny · 24/04/2026 16:12

A little over 2k for my share.

Comeonalley · 24/04/2026 16:12

Renter2026 · 24/04/2026 15:46

stackhead · 24/04/2026 16:04

Just over 1k for half here for mortgage and regular monthly direct debits.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/04/2026 16:03

I pay £1500 into the joint account, this includes food though as well as bills.

Biggest expense is mortgage £1,100, Food about £700, Council tax is over £300 a month (for ten months) a year, energy is less at this time of year with solar panels and heating hardly on/not on for a few months, but expensive in winter, TV (Sky Q multiroom), various insurance (two cars, home, dog, one car with a 17 year old insured on it!) phones, vet plans for pets, probably other things I've forgotten.

AnonKat · 24/04/2026 16:01

Ours is around 3k. Mortgage, car, electricity, gas, water, insurances, tv, Internet. I dont pay anything towards the bills. My money is used for food, savings and fun money.

Absolutepleb · 24/04/2026 15:59

£700 excluding food and mortgage, so £350 would be half ☺️

2 bed shithole

slamfightbrightlight · 24/04/2026 15:58

Fixed costs are close to £1500 combined. Council tax alone is almost £200/month! We don’t have childcare costs but that would probably double it if we did.

We each keep about £600 back in our personal accounts and everything else goes into joint account to cover bills, food etc. So we both have the same spare to play with. Anything that’s left in joint account at month end goes away for a rainy day.

Catlover77 · 24/04/2026 15:58

£1600 each, excluding groceries
