AIBU to ask what your half of household bills comes to?

What is your half of household bills? Excluding food shopping. Just mortgage/ rent, utilities, council tax, joint insurance or car payments. Assuming you split costs 50/50 with a partner or thereabouts.

I've seen a few content creators talk about this online recently and been surprised how high it is, usually always over £1000 meaning full costs are over £2000 before food.

I'm probably being unreasonable to think that's such a lot given how high costs are at the moment

£1,100 just fir bills seems such a lot, is your house large?

That is the total amount

Bufftailed · 24/04/2026 17:45

Thanks for the prompt. Single parent household. £1625 including mortgage not inc food, no car. I think I’m a master of keeping costs down.

GodDamnitDonut · 24/04/2026 17:45

Our mortgage alone is £2200 so we would be well above the £1000 figure for 50/50 split

HoskinsChoice · 24/04/2026 17:44

Only about £13k these days as the mortgages are all paid off although that will go up next month as jet fuel is going up.

canklesmctacotits · 24/04/2026 17:42

Isn’t this asking how long a piece of string is? How are these answers meaningful to you OP?

TeenLifeMum · 24/04/2026 17:38

About £2500 (but we have joint accounts so it’s all family money). 3 DDs ages 14-18.

mortgage - 1100
bills - 1000
food - 1000
kids clubs - 150
tutoring - 200
fuel - 200
car tax - 50
car insurance - 1300 (includes 2 cars, dh, me and 18yo dd1)

bugalugs45 · 24/04/2026 17:33

Gas , electric , water ,council tax , car insurance/ tax , pet insurance , internet / tv , luckily mortgage free
approx £600 per month total , live alone so I pay it all

LottieMary · 24/04/2026 17:32

1500 including mortgage and all utilities, insurances including life cover, child care, vet plan, and paying off a boiler

AgnesMcDoo · 24/04/2026 17:29

Our joint bills are about £4k

We don’t split it - all income into one account and all bills out. I earn more so out more in

Overthemoun · 24/04/2026 17:27

Just the house?

council tax - 300
utilities - 250
mortgage - 1300
insurances - 40
Tv licence - 15
tele and internet - 50
Mobiles - 50

£2k so £1k each

SamphiretheTervosaur · 24/04/2026 17:26

Including house insurance, car insurance, all bills incl.pet costs, holiday savings etc? No spending money, no mortgage

About £1600

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 24/04/2026 17:17

I paid the whole deposit on the house so he’s doing the mortgage and bills right now while I recoup savings and the money I lost taking time off to have the babies. I don’t actually know what he’s paying right now which isn’t great… I think it’s around £2k, maybe 2.5k. I think we have a fair deal and he’s happy with it, but once I’ve recouped it probably won’t be 50/50 since I make a lot less and need to focus on pension contributions. When we first started living together I paid the most since I was the higher earner so we tend to split it like that.

Squidgemoon · 24/04/2026 17:16

All our bills before food and personal spends/savings come to £2,750 and DH is a SAHD so it all comes out of my salary! That includes mortgage, council tax, gas and electric, home insurance, life insurance, pet insurance, internet and TV, mobile phones, travel, petrol and all DC’s clubs and tutor. We also overpay the mortgage on top of that and save for Christmas etc. Food is usually around £600 a month. My salary disappears fast!

CountingMosts · 24/04/2026 16:59

Mortgage, council tax, water, broadband, gas/electricity, mobile phone, home insurance, commuting costs, car repayments, and car insurance come to around £1,670 per month, which is more than half my take-home salary.

Nobody to share costs with, so I bear that alone.

I also contribute around £250/month to an account shared with XH to cover shared pet and essential child-related costs (clubs, school uniform, essential clothes, occasional school meal, school trips, pet insurance, pet food).

Take-home salary is £3k.

Household is me plus 2 teen DC (50/50 so feed them.half the week).

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 24/04/2026 16:59

Mortgage 1550
Energy 200
Water 60
Council tax 270

We also have loads of streaming payments including sky, 3x phones, weekly cleaning, contact lenses, insurance etc. We probably pay out £3k a month before food 😳 Take home is just over £7k tho

AImportantMermaid · 24/04/2026 16:47

Mortgage - £2k
Energy - £200
Wifi - £29
Council tax - £220
Netflix/Apple music/subscriptions - £100 ish
Insurances - £200

So about £3000 - we just throw all the money in the same account. DP earns more than me so I guess more comes from ‘his’ money but we both spend freely from the same account and have money in joint savings.

Llttledrummergirls · 24/04/2026 16:44

We just pay into a pot and use what we need.

BellesAndGraces · 24/04/2026 16:41

Well I win, yay me.

£3,800 is my share of bills and on top of that I pay school fees of £2,300. I was down to my last £45 yesterday before payday today!

CherryBlossom321 · 24/04/2026 16:41

£1250.

redskyAtNigh · 24/04/2026 16:40

I would consider £2000 if that includes all expenses to run a house and car to be pretty "normal" if we're talking about family sized homes.

I do wonder what bills people are including though. It's not just council tax, gas and electric.

Elaine118 · 24/04/2026 16:40

Around £600 a month for my half of bills. Based on mortgage, council tax, water, electric, gas, house insurance, broadband and tv licence.

We live in a big-ish house but have a relatively small mortgage and just 2 adults.

I'm always curious to read these but I know a lot of people hate these type of posts. I do find it intersting to see how it's split for other people. It doesn't come up in conversation much irl for me.

Meadowfinch · 24/04/2026 16:39

I'm a single mum so I pay the whole lot which comes to £925 a month. Thankfully my mortgage is small.

Mumstheword1983 · 24/04/2026 16:38

£1400 each for all bills including car finance and childminder. Nothing is particularly high other than council tax. We pay £430 monthly which I didn't realise was so high until I read here. That does include water.

Happyjoe · 24/04/2026 16:35

About £1,000. We have no mortgage now but we run 2 cars, have pets, we also don't scrimp on food and have the occasional takeaway or meal out, about one a month. It does add up now, everything is much more expensive.

My rent is £1,500 before I even get into anything else (a 1 bed flat).
