To ask: if your are anti-Reform and in Wales...

is tactical voting needed?

I am trying to work out if tactical voting is needed in Wales to keep Reform out, or whether the new PR system makes that approach redundant.

For example: if the local opinion polls show Plaid first Labour second, a vote for either will do the job? But anywhere where it is Plaid first, Reform second or vice versa, it has to be Plaid?

What do other anti-Reform people in Wales think?

YABU - tactical voting not needed under the new system

YANBU - it is still needed

(There are a few threads encouraging voting for Reform running at the moment, so assume this one is OK).

This is the first Senedd election in which 16 year olds can vote isn’t it?

Edited

Second, I believe. I suppose the good thing about lowering the voting age is that her school (so I assume others too) have been having assemblies about the importance of voting and encouraging them to register.

tanstaafl · 25/04/2026 07:39

North East Wales here.
with the constituency reform ( down to 16 ) and 6 MS per constituency based on PR, I fear Wales is going nowhere, probably backwards from now on.

I think I am voting Plaid. I don't know. I am feeling really down by the fact that my constituency is likely to be a Reform win. No one has knocked on my door, but the postal stuff really seems to be targeting my teenage DD, she's received mail from all parties, unlike DH and me. She's having lots of fun practising the old art of political posters vandalism.

Just don't vote for a party that thinks a woman can have a penis and you should be fine

Yes, sound advice! Thing is…Here in Wales, that leaves us with just either the Conservatives or (shudder) Reform.

There's more to life than trans issues, and I consider myself gender critical.

Therewerelions · 24/04/2026 21:04

In my constituency there have been four opinion polls putting Plaid first, reform second and Labour third.
This area is normally a Labour stronghold but they are way behind the other two.
So, I will be voting Plaid for the first time hoping to keep reform out.

LittleBowSheep · 24/04/2026 16:38

I'm in the same area as you two @KimHwn @Periperi2025

The Foden matter was absolutely horrendous and totally unforgiveable. However, I've had a lot of good dealings with Cyngor Gwynedd and have been quite impressed with them on a number of occasions. I lived in Ynys Môn for many years and their County Council was diabolical.

Our MS has been amazingly supportive and active on behalf of myself, neighbours and other villages across the county over the last few years and I will most definitely be voting for her again in the upcoming Senedd elections.

So far I've only seen Plaid canvassing in our (very Welsh) village. I don't think Reform would get a warm welcome from anyone here but we've had some crap through the post from them. It's easy to just go through the Electoral Register and send a pamphlet out to each address, isn't it?

When I did one of those questionnaires about your views on policies to decide which party to vote for it came out as libdem. Massive waste of a vote in my constituency, and I still can't get past the Nick Clegg lies.
I think I will be voting Plaid but my vote is still wavering. The canvassers should be after me but all quiet there except Reform. Not even had anything through the door (and I am not rural - biggest town in the constituency)

I'm not a member but I'll canvass you now for Plaid if it helps! 🌻

Just something shifty about him, would throw anyone under the bus - standard for most politicians really.
I got the same vibe from Ken Skates, though granted I didn't talk to him for long.

I got that impression from watching him on question time. I really liked the leader of the lib dem as an individual politician, just not the party.

For me the issue with tactical voting is do you end up voting for a party to just keep another party out rather than voting for the party you think will be the best for you and Wales. It is a real predicament....... hopefully someone will have an answer!

It's def

its a case of voting for the 'least worst' in any situation these days. Definitely not just a wales problem.

LandSsmum · 24/04/2026 15:12

I'm also in Gwynedd and a welsh speaker. Ive always been a Labour voter and well aware of the issues at Cyngor Gwynedd. I work with various departments through my work.
Im struggling to choose who to vote for. Id actually welcome some canvassers but have only had Reform so far.
Ive met Rhyn Ap Iorwerth. He's engaging and likeable on the surface but I get the impression hes tricky.
Ive also met Llinos Medi. I preferred her as a person but she is very tight with Rhun and I get the impression she does what shes told.

Tricky, how?

I also live in the county where the Foden case happened and it clearly illustrated the old boys network in the council. I am trying hard to think of anywhere local where the only secondary option is for English medium education from Yr 10. I know Foden’s school was mainly English but there’s a completely Welsh medium school round the corner. Being bilingual can only be an advantage but it’s good to have choice.

They're phasing out (or have phased out) the English options entirely. I think friars was one of the last to go0

Periperi2025 · 24/04/2026 10:25

Be careful voting plaid, i live in a plaid strong hold.
The council is corrupt, lazy and actually dangerous (Foden's reign of terror).

They also want to remove all choice of an English language education. I love that my DD is bilingual in her primary education but know many adults who have struggled at university due to their Welsh education and are staunchly in favour of English dominant secondary education. We live in a democracy within the UK, this is a choice that shouldn't be taken away from us.

Reform.will be the death nell for the welsh language, so Plaid all the way here.
1st language welsh students I've met have all thrived in English universities. I'm for Welsh medium teaching. New arrivals to the area seem less keen and often didn't know about it until they moved here, which strikes me as bonkers.

I live in the same constituency as you, and I agree on the council and the Foden case. It's horrific. I don't know a single person who has struggled in life due to being educated to be fluent in two languages, though, and in my part of that constituency, the only secondary school in the area teaches all subjects from yr10 through the medium of English, giving no Welsh language choices.

Not listening to people with a different opinion to your own whilst living in a democratic society is what led us to leave the EU.

I have no doubt that there are 'pro-reform' voters on here, given that it is a legitimate party standing in the next election, and all the polls suggest that there are plenty of people planning on voting that way.

Labour are lazy and complacent, you only need to look at the deputy leader they put up on question time. It was hard to tell if he'd simply given up already or if he still believes ,despite plenty of evidence to the contrary, that Labour will get another landslide victory, and didn't feel he needed to try at all.

Plaid are dangerous if you take the time to look at the evidence from areas they have long controlled rather than simply buying into there manifestos.

Reform are an unsavoury unknown.

I don't think voting Reform is any better or worse than the other two really.

Hiya. There are loads of other threads to discuss the pros and cons of Reform/Labour/whoever..

This thread is for advice for those for
of us who may wish to vote tactically to keep Reform out of power in Wales.
