As a proud Northerner i can say 80 per cent of my peer group will vote for Reform in May. Do you think it will be a North v South split?

As a school governor, the funding situation is dire and much worse than the last Parliament. My oldest is in year 5. Through her time in infants she had classes of 20 ish, with a teacher, 2 TA per class, lots of extra activities. My youngest is 3 years behind her and her experience has been very different in the same school, much fewer staff, a mainstream school being forced to take children whose needs they cannot meet so all TA'sare diverted to a seperate class which has been set up for these children who cannot cope in mainstream classes. From having a healthy budget surplus they are likely to end this year in deficit for the first time in 15 years, as the wait times in our area for EHCPS are double what they were 3 years ago so the schools aren't getting the funding through. The money promised from VAT on private fees has never materialised. The universal free breakfast clubs promised by Labour have never materialised.

My best friend is a social worker and reports huge budget cuts over the past few years, staff are stretched to breaking point, with several off long term with stress.

I have worked in commuinity paediatrics for nearly 20 years. Everyone in our team will confidently say the last 2-3 years are the worst in history. Our speech therapy team have had to close their wait lists as too long, and if those who are seen get 1 appt, advice abd then discharge. My daughter was under the same team 6 years ago and was seen weekly for a year.

And yet our national debt is higher than ever.

Yes, some of the issues are linked to external factors like wars abroad. And there may be policy work going on in the background. But your average person doesn't care about the background. They care about their life right now.

  • how long they and their family wait for nhs care
  • the quality of their child's education right now
  • how much money they have left after paying essential bills
  • how their commuinity looks and feels, is it clean and safe

And for many people things are much worse.

Yes. My 2nd DC currently in Y4 will be in a class of 34 next year, with no class TAs (only 1-to-1 TAs for 2 very disruptive children) and I believe the school will still be in deficit approx 30k

For those that say there is a link between being more educated and more likely to be left wing or pro EU…i completely agree! That’s because our universities are left wing brainwashing factories and our schools are becoming that way! Long gone are the days of teaching critical thinking and looking at the evidence provided before you make an informed decision. Its now left wing rubbish and no one dares to openly disagree because you will be labelled as racist, sexist, homophobic, fascist, stupid, etc. I remember finding the extreme bias towards left wing politics unbearable when i went to uni in 2008…and i wasn’t even that interested in politics then.

No, more the Obama system which was very successful without all the dramatics

So Reform are proposing a ‘UK Deportation Command’ and building detention centers for up to 24,000 people. I do think the ‘like Obama’ comment, which Farage has used, is a deliberate misrepresentation of more extreme policy.

Such a slippery slope - they propose leaving the ECHR, ‘disapplying’ the 1951 Refugee Convention, repealing the Human Rights Act and passing a Mass Deportation Bill.
These would have a huge impact upon the Belfast/Good Friday agreement and the UK-EU trade and cooperation agreement.
Reform also proposing ‘disapplying’ Refugee, Torture and Anti-Trafficking conventions.
It’s obviously legally and economically quite fraught but for me pretty morally bereft too.

Taxes up significantly, economy flatlining and performing worse than any other G7 country, education funding destroyed in part due to policy of VAT on private school fees which n has backfired spectacularly resulting in harming the education of tens of thousands or children, a reduction in per capita funding for state schools and a bill for the taxpayer.

Labour are so bad, far worse than anything we’ve experienced before, that you have to question the motives of anyone still supporting them. Maybe some people don’t like to admit what an error they made voting for them. As with most Labour governments it will take a generation to correct the mess they leave behind.

If Trump hadn’t pulled us into war the economy was starting to show signs of recovery. GDP was up by 0.5% bigger than the forecast in Feb 26.

Liz Truss personally cost me £300 extra on my mortgage and millions others. The stand off she had with the BOE could have cost us all our pensions thanks to her hubris.

And also thanks to the austerity measures from the last Tory government healthy life expectancy has dropped to its lowest levels since 2011 (Gordon Brown was PM until May 2010). That is shocking news and should be front page (but won’t thanks to our right wing media). You can look it up at the ONS. It’s shocking how it’s gone down in a G7 country. The disparities between the richest and poorest regions are ever widening. In my opinion the previous Tory government was a disaster of epic proportions. God knows why anyone would want them or their rejects the Reform party in power ever again.

And let’s not forget we would be at war with Iran at the moment if we had a Tory or Reform
government sending good men and women out to die needlessly.

In regards to the death penalty being a deterrent…I doubt this actually works for the intended audience (psychopaths, murderers, rapists etc). Such people tend to think that they will never get caught and/or what they are doing is ok.

If the death penalty was truly a deterrent, certain states in the USA would have the lowest murder rate. But that doesn’t bear out. Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana all have the death penalty and are all in the top 5 states for murder rates (when adjusted for population).

Restore can talk about the death penalty until the cows come home. It’s never happening in the UK. I can’t think of a country, especially in the West, that has abolished the death penalty then renistated it decades later.

I agree, I think Kemi is the most impressive of them all and wonder why pp doesn’t like her. 🧐 I have my suspicions though…..

Yes that laughing emoji for Kemi.. not the failing men.

So calling yourself a 'proud' northerner is ok?

Absolutely…why wouldn’t it be?

BlakeCarrington · 24/04/2026 14:23

Could you come back @Flamingojune and explain why we can’t be proud northerners please.

Why don’t you like Kemi? She seems like the most sane out of all of them.

Primarily they want immigration to be stricter

Isn't that what a general election for? These are local elections.

I’m wondering too, mn seems at odds on this as well as Starmer. She polls well and he doesn’t.

Are you in favour of an ICE like force in the UK enacting some of these policies?
Have you seen the impact that this force has had on communities? families separated and children held?

I personally would absolutely hate to see our country following this model of violent enforcement of immigration policy but I fear this opens the door for it.

The cuts to the benefits bill
2 child benefit cap
no benefits for foreign nationals
Restoring law and order
Detention and deportation of illegal immigrants
Deportations of foreign criminals
protection for churches

Are northerners not allowed to feel pride @Flamingojune? why on earth not? What’s wrong with northerners?

Atleastthedoglikesme · 24/04/2026 13:47

Also, Rudakabana was officially a child at the time of the crimes. Should we kill those who murdered Jamie Bulger as well, if we are killing people who commit murder before they are adults? I am really wondering who Restore want to give death penalty to. Letby was convicted of killing tiny helpless babies. She would definitely be on the death penalty list I assume?

Edited

Axel can absolutely get it. I agree with lowering the age of adulthood to 16 for crimes like this. I had a child of my own at 16.
We have clear evidence of what he did. In the age of forensics and cctv we really should bring back the death penalty for crimes like that

glitterpaperchain · 24/04/2026 14:03

There have been 2 elections recently. One for the MP in Gorton and Denton, which the Greens won. One for a local MP in Cliftonville (because the Reform councillor went to prison), which the Greens also won. I'd say the actual evidence here is showing that Greens could do really well in the upcoming locals.

glitterpaperchain · 24/04/2026 14:01

Greyblankie · 24/04/2026 13:58

Better deterrent though isn’t it?

I don't think so. The amount of time you can spend on appeals, you yourself said earlier that if there's any doubt then it wouldn't apply. It doesn't seem effective in the US. And I was responding to your point about it costing the taxpayer, death penalty would cost more.

The death penalty is more expensive than life without parole

It's like people don't want to believe she's guilty. She doesn't look the "type." She could be your mate, someone you know, " like you "

I believe she IS guilty, but questions are still being asked.

Ohcrap082024 · 24/04/2026 13:56

Reform are all talk and no trousers.

I think they will do very well in the local elections. Which actually might prove to be a good thing. People will then get to see that their local Reform party are
just as rubbish, if not more so, than the others. That Reform may talk a good talk but when it actually comes down to the work, they haven’t got a clue. None of them actually want to
do the work that comes with being elected.

Doing well this year may take the shine off Reform come the next GE.

glitterpaperchain · 24/04/2026 13:56

Greyblankie · 24/04/2026 13:47

Yes he is now but what about the years he’s lived at the tax payers expense? Should have got rid of him years ago.

Lucy Letby, it’s not 100% proven that she’s guilty so no.

The death penalty is more expensive than life without parole

Greyblankie · 24/04/2026 13:56

dunroaminaroind · 24/04/2026 13:51

Well exactly, that’s one of the reason the death penalty was abolished. LL was tried and convicted and appeal was denied. So yes she’s guilty in the eyes of the law. What caveat would you have in place to prevent her being given the death penalty if you’re giving it to others who are convicted of heinous crimes?

As I’ve said, undeniable guilt. Literally seen doing it, caught with a dead body in your car, DNA evidence etc etc

There would be a very small amount of people actually receive the death penalty for this reason.

Do they understand how Brexit enabled a huge swathe of immigration because European workers over here temporarily all went home?

Edited

They see how Britain has demographically changed over the last half a century or so of labour/conservatives and they want a new party.

And before you come for me I answered a question about how people I know are thinking I haven’t said my own opinions
