As a proud Northerner i can say 80 per cent of my peer group will vote for Reform in May. Do you think it will be a North v South split?

Hang on, who has said that?

Not me 🤷‍♀️

@BlakeCarrington wouldn't dream of condescension. Doesn't think twice about putting words in people's mouths to serve their own narrative though

Wow, that is A star condescension right there. Look at all the thickos who shouldn’t be able to vote because they don’t have an MA like me!

FWIW I also have a Masters but I wouldn’t dream of such condescension. Has it ever occurred to you that those not lucky enough to go to uni are still your equal? Clearly not.

Hang on, who has said that?

AnythingButThis · 24/04/2026 15:13

Maybe what matters is not how much you are or are not educated but how much you engage your brain - in research on policy, understanding ideas and consequences - in order to contribute to a democracy.

The fact that this thread keeps reverting to accusations of people being patronized, talked down to etc is because I believe that is an observed Farage and Trump technique - and a Reform one - of whipping up self-righteousness and therefore support through division.

It is true historically (and now) that right wing politicians (and arguably others) mobilize fear of immigrants, of difference, and blame the woes of those that are most disadvantaged on these straw men in order to grow momentum and support. In doing so they have and do weaponise the fears and situations of those less fortunate (in a number of ways). I believe Farage and his bunch of clowns is doing that now.

Critical thinking means your decision to be left wing is an educated one and you will be able to justify it effectively.

Same will be true for some people who are centrist or right wing.

And there will be those who are right or left wing who are that way out of habit, or family habits, influence of those around them etc.

In many cases the decision will be personally motivated, and they then use their critical thinking skills to create an effective narrative to justify it, rather than their skills leading to their opinion.

The most interesting/well researched voters are often the floating voters. Those who views and votes evolve and change over time, based on the policies and track history of individual parties and policies, the needs of that particular time etc. Those that go 'I will only every vote Labour and my parents only ever voted Labour and my grandparents before them' often struggle to create an effective argument.

People vote with their egos rather than their brains I find.

I am a floating voter. On some topics, my views may be considered left leaning and on others I am more right leaning. You would not be able to guess my opinion on, say, immigration just because I told you my view on feminism.

I miss all the centrists. Too much extremism in both directions at the moment. Or it may be that those are the only type of people who shout so loud about their political views.

For those that say there is a link between being more educated and more likely to be left wing or pro EU…i completely agree! That’s because our universities are left wing brainwashing factories and our schools are becoming that way! Long gone are the days of teaching critical thinking and looking at the evidence provided before you make an informed decision. Its now left wing rubbish and no one dares to openly disagree because you will be labelled as racist, sexist, homophobic, fascist, stupid, etc. I remember finding the extreme bias towards left wing politics unbearable when i went to uni in 2008…and i wasn’t even that interested in politics then.

You went to university almost 20 years ago and you're sure you know that they are now "left wing brainwashing factories"?

On what evidence are you basing this bold statement?

myislandhome · 24/04/2026 15:10

I live in the north and no-one I know supports Reform.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 24/04/2026 15:09

Northerner, no reform votes in my circle.

It also taught me how to identify bias in research, and how to weigh the validity of studies

I still think overarching narratives are bought as readily, and not even seen.

It makes people question what algorithms push their way. It also means they research assertions and don’t take them at face value. It usually means they can evidence their claims.

I don’t think going through the university system means that much, it doesn’t make anyone more immune to narratives or algorithms.

Although I’d say some of the stuff I learnt there is useful for what’s happening rn in terms of opposing sides.

Do you want to show me where I said people without an MA shouldn't be able to vote? Or that they aren't my equal?

You don't think the person who said that universities are 'left wing brainwashing factories' was condescending?

Is it just the condescension you're disagreeing with here, or are you suggesting the data showing more education correlates with being more left wing is wrong?

I mentioned my MA as an example of higher education TEACHING the qualities she said it shuns.

Your posts speak for themselves @glitterpaperchain. Punching down and bigging yourself up with your precious “MA” thinking. **Caveat - not all MA holders punch down.

So you're not actually going to answer my questions? Why is it bigging myself up to mention my MA, but youre not bigging yourself up when you do it? Nothing you've said actually has any truth to it, you've just put words in my mouth.

So PP above who was in favour of Restore bringing back the death penalty. And I disagree because actual data and evidence shows that it is more expensive than life imprisonment and not an effective deterrent. Am I just being a loony lefty? For basing my opinion on the data and evidence?

Long gone are the days of teaching critical thinking and looking at the evidence provided before you make an informed decision.

This is what my university education TAUGHT me to do. I spent my MA doing meta-analyses.

It's really embarrassing to see people parrot back this line that right wingers say to try and justify the data that shows more educated people are less right wing. Critical thinking is the REASON I am left wing and the reason I don't get taken in by a lot of right wing rhetoric.

And your comments are a prime example of what im talking about!

The UK is run by civil servants who rarely have the best interests of anyone else at heart.

Local or National Government seem to be able to change nothing for the betterment of the population.

Sorry, I might be leaving right into your point, but did the leave votes actually get what they thought they would from Brexit?

  • higher food prices
  • more paperwork for small businesses
  • more spending on civil servants
  • 6% drop in GDP
  • 30% drop in exports
  • huge rise in immigration (mostly caused by attempts to offset brexit’s impact)
  • cuts to university funding
  • cuts to agricultural subsidies
  • less direct funding to areas of economic deprivation
  • french citizenship for Farage

Was that what they were voting for?

Brexit has been assessed as damaging GDP by as much as 8%.

Yes. My 2nd DC currently in Y4 will be in a class of 34 next year, with no class TAs (only 1-to-1 TAs for 2 very disruptive children) and I believe the school will still be in deficit approx 30k
