Could Zack Polanski be any more of an obnoxious twat?

Just seen him saying this:

'I am concerned about the rise in antisemitism and we know Jewish communities are saying they feel unsafe. There is a conversation to be had over whether it's a perception that they feel unsafe or whether they are actually unsafe.'

WTAF? Can you imagine if a politician said that to Muslims after a series of absolutely awful targeted attacks where people have died?

I don't get what's wrong with it, especially as Polanski, as a Jewish man, will be well-versed on what it's like to be on the receiving end of anti-Semitism. We are seeing the term 'anti-Semitism' being weaponised all the time. To criticise Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians and its constant breaking of international law is not anti-Semitic, but a lot of people (and a fair number of political chancers who are worried about Polanski's popularity) are saying just this.

Anti-Semitism is vile and Polanski has never said different. Being anti-Israeli policies and behaviour and anti-extreme Zionism is not anti-Semitic.

Polanski is that rare animal - an honest politician. Welcome him.

You think Saiqa Ali is just anti-extreme Zionism?

Maybe these ardent campaigners should be encouraged to visit Gaza and see for themselves what things are like on the ground.

Sadly they have missed the recent Palestine Marathon in the West Bank with a mirror race running Gaza itself but I’m sure they’d find it informative.

Lovely to see signs of normality return to Gaza. A marathon is a great watch and inspiring.

My dh observed a march in Bristol yesterday and said there were 2 distinct groups - 'nice' mc , older people, and younger airheads just shouting slogans.
Oh, and not just 'gays for Gaza' but 'drag queens for gaza'

Bloody hell.

There's a woman I saw on facebook. She's American, Jewish and lesbian. She shouts about Gaza Gaza Gaza. You just think..... what do you think would happen to you if you set foot in Gaza? Any guesses?

Has anyone noticed how ZP’s supporters present either empty soundbites or complete misinformation they’re clearly parroting from social media and don’t appear capable of critical thinking, They seem to have no knowledge of world history or international politics which is why they’re incapable of actually debating the matter at hand.

it seems that many people are incapable of critical thinking, that their thinking is black and white. What has happened to people? This is a real problem with society, humans being programmed into binary thinking are easy to control! It’s dystopian

Yep.

Anyone marching with that hate filled mob is complicite in the hatred.

I simply fail to understand why people here in the UK think that Jewish people here in the UK are responsible for the actions of a foreign government.

Were we, the average British person, responsible for what Blair did (or sanctioned) in iraq? Or what Trump is doing now in Iran? Or blamed the average Chinese person for Covid? It's fucking nuts.

The ONLY explanation is anti semitism. Unchecked, waved through and sanctioned anti-semitism.

You have Jewish school children told to take off their blazers before leaving their fenced in and armed schools before walking home. You have people like my Jewish friend's disabled son asking her if he can scrub the Jewish blood from his veins because he is terrified of people knowing he is Jewish.

Then you have people like Polanski saying it's all just a perception. You have the Green party now being a safe haven for candidates who are being arrested for hate crimes who it seems are SO into climate change- but they are fucking there because they find a welcoming home.

Shame on anyone who thinks this is okay.

I agree, but the people sharing that hatred usually shout 'but Gaza, wah was, freeee Palestine. They aren't intelligent enough to realise the conflict in Gaza is nothing to do with UK Jewish people.

Children in Jewish schools should not be afraid and locked behind fences but those hate filled chanters with their soundbites don't care.

I’m an atheist Jew and proud of being Jewish however nowadays I would be nervous of telling someone I don’t know that I’m Jewish. That feels like a pretty easy way to assess whether there’s been a rise in anti-semitism.

It's awful that you feel this way in 2026 in the UK. It really needs sorting out. People need to understand that Jewish people here are nothing to do with the recent conflict.

Absolutely and I’m appalled that Jewish people have been made to feel that way in the UK.

I have a friend in Sweden. The healthcare is EXCELLENT. You have to pay for prescriptions up to an annual comp and you have to pay a base fee to see a doctor - cash desk at the entrance to A&E but their time wasters and missed appointments must be minuscule. Can we have this system here please? No because those on low wages have been conditioned to think they deserve to pay little to no tax, and the bleeding heart liberals think our health service is the envy of the world, despite dire cancer stats and people dying in A&E corridors.

Does your friend tell you about paying municipal (local) tax on a low income? Like how most on low incomes here pay council tax? The difference between outcomes in the UK and Sweden is down to our varying models of welfare states, not because people in the UK are intrinsically lazy. "Conditioned to think they deserve to pay little to no tax" indeed - one of the more asinine comments I've read on MN. Apart from the fact that literally nobody pays no tax or that our starting rates for income tax are broadly similar to Sweden's, you're mirroring Polanski's comment most neatly! People on low incomes only perceive they don't have much money. 🤣
It's your so called "bleeding heart liberals" who are responsible for welfare states and therefore free at the point of use healthcare. Because despite your belittling language, those people are pragmatic and strategic.

As David Baddiel (another atheist Jew) has said, the nazis also sent non-practising Jews to the gas chambers. Being Jewish is a religion and an ethnicity. Whether or not you agree with him, Zack Polanski is Jewish

I agree. There are tons of secular Jews. Moreover there are so few Jews left that we really can't afford to make distinctions about who does and doesn't count on the basis of how religious you are.

I'm not practicing. I'm as Jew-ish as it gets. But what an insult it would be to my grandparents and my heritage if I denied who I am.

Did you read his interview in the Guardian in February where he claimed that his first gay kiss/snog was in a nightclub aged 14 with a young Muslim man called Jihad? What with his name-changing and the boob-growing incident I think he is a fantasist and a showman.

This is misinformation: the case being considered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) hasn’t reached a conclusion yet and probably won’t for several years.

You are getting confused with the opinions of a United Nations commission of enquiry made up of 3 people.

The UN themselves acknowledge that they cannot make a legal determination as to whether a situation constitutes genocide under international law. It says a situation is referred to as genocide only after a competent national or international court has declared it as such.

When asked by journalists if he would consider using the word genocide to describe Israel’s actions in Gaza, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said, “It’s for the court to decide whether it’s genocide or not, and we see the evidence mounting”.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently hearing a case bought by South Africa that accuses Israeli forces of genocide but it could take several years to reach a conclusion.

You're right of course, Twiglets, but shouting into a void inhabited by various useful idiots who've seized on "genocide" as the latest fashionable word which, if repeated often enough, might just stick

It doesn't work among thinking people, but will no doubt go on being popular among the type who'd struggle to point out Palestine on a map - like a ranter of my acquaintance who put their finger on Tunisia Confused

In the meantime somone sent me this from Brendan O'Neill, which I though summed it up rather well:

"The more that ‘respectable society’ writes off Jews as hyperbolic self-pitiers, as sly silencers of ‘criticism of Israel’, the more it incites their fanatical haters. You’re right, these ‘progressives’ essentially say to violent anti-Semites: Jews are an untrustworthy people whose chief aim is to muzzle your righteous criticism of Israel"

Typo

Because those same useful idiots have read on social media they must take to the streets to support Iran, because that’s what all the clever, righteous people do. Trump hates Iran so Iran must be great! There really are a lot of thick people out there clinging on to any hope of the appearance of not being stupid

Then some are very willing to be hired thugs for Iran and go out and firebomb ambulances.

Are we really though? Or are people just repeating that claim, hoping it sticks?
What we are seeing are increasing attacks on Jewish people, businesses and institutions around the world. Real, physical attacks.
Would these constitute antisemitism in your opinion?

Yup - it's not that anti-semitism is being weaponised all the time.

More that we see a rise in antisemitism in society including amongst the MN community so are forced to challenge that, unpleasant though it is.

Polanski is apparently an 'honest politician' who huffed out of the Lib Dems when he didn't get pre-selected for something and jumped to the Greens because of his personal political ambitions.

He also claimed to have made a woman's breasts bigger via the power of hypnosis.

The former makes him as craven and self-interested as many politicians. The latter makes him a fruitcake.

And he didn’t seem to grasp he wasn’t preselected because he didn’t qualify for selection in the first place!

Within the Lib Dem’s he didn’t seem to have any political ideology, swaying from the left to the right of the party depending on his own agenda.

His MO is to try to be a big fish in a small pond, he’s willing to do anything to get power, he is Faustian to the core. He’s an actor playing the role of his life in a modern adaptation of Marlowe’s play, How fitting that wokery is seen by the most erudite of scholars as the new form of Puritanism!

Well according to the International Court of Justice they are.

That is incorrect.
As of May 2026, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has not made a final ruling on whether Israel is committing genocide.

Wearenotborg · 02/05/2026 06:50

Francine84 · 01/05/2026 13:23

Did Iran attack Israel? No, Israel bombed them last year as a ‘preemptive strike’ and then again this year, for what reason?

Israel has nuclear weapons, Iran doesn’t. Israel has bombed Iran with no provocation for the last 2 years. Israel is now invading Lebanon and seizing land, slaughtering civilians as they go.

But it’s OK, because it’s Israel and we’re not allowed to criticise Israel. They’re committing genocide, they’ve attacked every single one of their neighbouring countries, but you don’t want to admit that Israel is the problem here. Give it a rest.

I think the poster was asking why people are not up in arms at Iran killing thousands of its own people for protesting the regime? Why are those people not worth supporting?
