What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?

I’m in a reflective mood, and it’s got me thinking about something I did a few years ago which is probably the thing I’m most deeply ashamed of.

There was a coworker who really rubbed me up the wrong way. I was very unhappy at the time, and going through an awful time personally. She would make snide comments about me, do things with my family members (who were colleagues too) which really got my back up, I felt like she judged me harshly and was pretty rude. Along with another colleague they made three or four very nasty comments which still stick with me.

Instead of raising a grievance, which I should have done, I took to posting about her on another website (along the lines of Mumsnet), not realising she used it too. She saw the posts and reported me, and I ended up facing a meeting with HR and a senior partner of the firm I was working in. It damaged my reputation within the firm forever and I ended up leaving after not being offered a promotion. I still feel ashamed of it now, nearly half a decade on, and feel like it’s tarred me forever.

Whats the worst thing you’ve ever done?

Good. Someone did something very similar to me two years ago and I was unfairly sacked. I did absolutely nothing wrong. I did get a good settlement but I still don't have a job.

People like you should be utterly ashamed of themselves. All because you can't handle someone not doing what you want. You should have raised it directly as a grievance.

I think you're missing the point of the thread.......

Have you seen ‘The Drama’ at the cinema?
Hard to beat theirs!!

Bubblewrap22 · 20/04/2026 21:36

When I was at uni I lied in front of a police car in the middle of the road because I asked if they could give me a lift home (I was drunk and they were near the taxi rank)

Also buying ‘ child’ train tickets until I was 22… I got caught eventually and had to pay £5K in all the journeys I made as a ‘child’ but in the adult fare

I thought we'd all been there! I did this when we were having a new bathroom fitted and the workmen were upstairs and I was desperate! I grabbed my toddlers nappy and did it in a coat cupboard as I was too embarrassed to ask them if I could access the toilet then do a poo! I couldn't have gone to say a supermarket as I was desperate and hadn't been there long enough to ask neighbours!!

I've done worse.....
New BF house, stayed over for first time. Desperately needed a poo and bathroom right next to bedroom so would have heard/smelt it. I was too embarrassed just in case he heard me (IBS so would have been a splatty, farty one!) so i told him I was going to have a quick shower and I pooped in the shower and pushed it down the plug hole...... 🙈🙈🙈

How were Woolies selling things at £2.99 and HMV selling the same merchandise at £16? It doesnt make sense

Just an Xmas sale, those 3 VHS were £2.99 but full price in HMV. Bought full boxes, like 24 a time and they got managers out, accused me of selling them at car boot sales. No.....think again idiots
Always smile when those films come on TV.. I MISS WOOLIES. 😄

Dollymylove · 20/04/2026 21:31

Britainisgreat · 20/04/2026 20:59

BEAT THIS THEN. Scammed HMV out of thousands of quid. Bought VHS videos in Woolies. £2.99 each, the films Fly Away Home. Matilda and Brassed Off. Boxes full sometimes. Managers asked why I was buying so many. Took them in HMV, no receipt of course and got credits or CD's for £14.99 or £16.99.or each one. That's what hey scanned at. Did it hundreds of times, they never refused me and gave me vouchers too if I didn't want any good. Then just got bored. Good scheme though eh? Clever. I couldn't believe how they were so dumb as not to see the same vidoes being returned faulty. Several London branches, some in Sheffield when viditing my mum and even did a few in Boots, Tower records. Have over 1000 CD's, most obtained fraudulenty. Had hundreds of quids worth of vouchers at one point.

This is so weird because I had a dream about this last night and I felt awful all day.

I cheated a lot on my uni boyfriend. Initially it was when he annoyed me (incredibly immature of me) but I'm ashamed to say it became a habit. The worst was that I had a fling with another of our housemates. So so nasty of me. Housemate then found a proper girlfriend unsurprisingly and I had the audacity to feel hurt about being "dumped". It feels now like all that was done by a completely different and completely horrible person. I've been with my husband 30 years and never even thought about cheating, I just wouldn't.

@Puffalicious Basically I ended it with someone I had just told that I loved because my ex came back on the scene and fucked with my head. He didn’t actually want me but didn’t want me finding someone else. I ended up with neither. It’s over 10 years ago and it still fucks me up. I get you.

Thank you. It's good to know others did it. 💔

I know they're both married &, I hope, happy.

The worst thing I've done is stay quiet when I should have spoken up. Watched a friend get bullied. Didn't say anything. Was scared of becoming the target. Still haunts me. Your mistake was public. Mine was silent. Both shameful. Both forgivable.

CharleneElizabethBaltimore · 20/04/2026 21:28

its not my greatest moment and to be fair im the single one but i like to try to encourage people to have affairs not because of the chase, but more of how corruptible they would be and weather they would do it as a one off and regain their morals, or weather they get a taste and cheat regularly etc

CakesAndCandles1 · 20/04/2026 21:27

Worked with a chap got on like a house on fire, I was late teens he was early 20’s. Funny chap who made work more fun.
His girlfriend was obsessed with ‘us’ constant harassment that we shouldn’t talk - he was my
manager so pretty difficult not to!. She’d ring me from his phone, get all our colleagues involved who were all young. Bar job type.

Everyone thought we’d slept together, I was getting all the backlash from doing it so in the end slept with him.

As one might say I was doing the time might as well do the crime.

The attraction might not have been so strong if she wasn’t so obsessive and pushy. Taught me a lesson about what sort of girlfriend I’d be in for future relationships.

Absolutely nothing that has been said so far is remotely close to the worst thing I’ve done so I’m keeping 🤐

I won’t tell!

When I was younger for a period of time I lived with my nanny. Irish & VERY religious. I absolutely despised going to church. So I hid her false teeth in the chest freezer when she'd gone to bed so we didn't have to go. She was frantically looking for them all over the house till I felt sorry for her because she couldn't eat her sunday dinner and I miraculously found them for her. Said they were in her pinny apron.
Oh I feel awful just typing it because she was an absolute diamond of a woman I just LOATHED going to church. She died in 2020 and I neber confessed what i'd done.

Know it’s wrong, but couldn’t help laughing at this!

Cherryicecreamx · 20/04/2026 21:26

I think if that's the worse thing you've done, you're a pretty good person 😅
I feel like generally I was brought up okay so I'm not sure why when I got to teens/early 20s I seemed to lack morals! I think I went a bit wild being given a free reign and got carried away in the excitement of life. I'm not proud of some of the stuff I've done and it actually seems so opposite to who I am today.

HearMeSnore · 20/04/2026 21:25

Back in my 20’s I had a really good male friend. He looked after me when I had my heart broken and was always there for me when I needed someone - even when my misfortune was my own fault. I knew that he was hoping for more than friendship and honestly I had feelings for him too, but I resolutely kept him as “just a friend” because our cosy situation with no strings and no pressure suited me just fine. I think I assumed we’d end up together one day but wasn’t ready to commit. Meanwhile I shagged around with a string of randoms who meant nothing to me, just because I could, and I wasn’t remotely discreet about it. Eventually he pulled away from me and stopped calling, and I had the nerve to be hurt and angry…until I grew up a bit and examined my own behaviour. Nobody’s ever been kinder to me, and I’ll always hate myself for hurting him.

Britainisgreat · 20/04/2026 21:24

Once was at my mum's and we went to Meadowhall shopping centre. Mum asked my daughter. Where's your dad gone? "Oh just to HMV to do another scam, won't be long...

Purplebunnie · 20/04/2026 21:21

I used to treat boys quite badly, drop them after a week, never knew why I even went out with some of them in the first place. I also wasn't very nice in a couple of instances when I worked at a riding stables I was pretty mean to one girl and a bit arrogant and rude to other people. I wish I could go back and be nicer, I do fret about it quite a lot. Consequently I try very hard to be a nice person now.

I would be so upset to have received one of these. The instant feeling of finally some financial relief only to realise it was a cruel joke would have broken me.

That was so mean and cruel. He must be twisted

I don't even have the courage to type mines. Actually feel suicidal on most days. Anyway, it is what it is..

The fact that you are trying to be a better person, means you are definitely not a monster 🌷

Although, what about "you shall not kill"??

Ehhhhh more fool HMV for allowing returns without proof of purchase 🤷‍♀️

Spot on. Couldn't have cash but CD's or credit notes were fine by me. Had a disabled travel pass too so no tube fares.

Britainisgreat · 20/04/2026 21:15

Aged 9 I hid my grandads glasses. He was as blind as a bat and was poking down the loo. "I know it's him" but of course my mum defended me They turned up after a week and never did admit it. He was a grumpy old twat, needing teaching a lesson. Spent 6 months with each of his kid's families.

Clever in the way that taking something that belongs to someone else is clever. It was really just theft with an extra step wasn't it?.
