What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?

I’m in a reflective mood, and it’s got me thinking about something I did a few years ago which is probably the thing I’m most deeply ashamed of.

There was a coworker who really rubbed me up the wrong way. I was very unhappy at the time, and going through an awful time personally. She would make snide comments about me, do things with my family members (who were colleagues too) which really got my back up, I felt like she judged me harshly and was pretty rude. Along with another colleague they made three or four very nasty comments which still stick with me.

Instead of raising a grievance, which I should have done, I took to posting about her on another website (along the lines of Mumsnet), not realising she used it too. She saw the posts and reported me, and I ended up facing a meeting with HR and a senior partner of the firm I was working in. It damaged my reputation within the firm forever and I ended up leaving after not being offered a promotion. I still feel ashamed of it now, nearly half a decade on, and feel like it’s tarred me forever.

Whats the worst thing you’ve ever done?

Inspired by this thread, I’ve written down the really bad things I’ve done, things that I regret terribly and wish I could take back. I’ve also written the ages at which I did them. (Mostly in my 20s but a few when I was primary school aged.)

I don’t think I will forgive myself for any of them but i did feel some relief to get them down on paper and look at the key factors behind them. Being young and stupid, alcohol and letting myself be pushed into things I didn’t really want to do (leading to really stupid actions) were the main ones for me.

Maybe that might help some others on here who are also ruminating on their mistakes?

The list will remain top secret, of course. I’ll probably burn it later.

Oh yes, I've done that too! He deserved it, as he'd let his dog run around our communal garden breaking two cardinal rules: dogs to be on leads at all times and all poo to be bagged and disposed of.

I had already called him once to tell him I was going to report him if he did it again. Lo and behold, a few days later I saw him shoo the dog out of his back door and close it again... the dog did a huge deposit in a part of the garden the very young kids liked to play in - and before I could get there to warn the au pair in charge of them, two beautifully dressed young girls emerged in floods of tears with poo all over their shoes and socks.

So I picked up the poo and posted it in the guy's letter box along with a note and an invitation to call me.

And did he?

He rang to say he was just leaving work and would be home in half an hour. So I cooked dinner to be ready when he arrived.

Except he didn’t arrive. He rolled in 5 hours late because his colleagues (and his lift) went to the pub. Pre mobile phones but he didn’t use the pub pay phone either. He staggered in pissed as a fart without saying a word, put his shoes on the kitchen counter next to his (cold and congealed) dinner, disappeared upstairs and fell asleep.

It was just too tempting …

Fair do’s.

They've not gone bust, as far as I'm aware. They still have stores and a website.

I kissed a married man, he was 29 I was 19. I look back and think what a fool. I was single though.

also ghosted my best friend, but I feel like it was justified as the friendship was getting toxic and she just wouldn’t get the hint when I tried to phase her out gradually

Goodness me, I can’t possibly a.) recall all the dreadful things I’ve done or b.) list them on here in case I get identified. Needless to say, I’ve had some spectacular falls from grace in my younger years and to be frank, made Cat Slater look like a nun.
I’m terribly guilty, ashamed and saddened by a lot of things I did. I was selfish, spoilt, entitled and self centred but also suffering with mental illness and undiagnosed adhd. Thats not an excuse but it helps me be a bit kinder to myself when I’m descending down a slippery slope of shame.
A few years ago, I converted to Catholicism and my first confession was a thing of wonder, the poor priest! It was very freeing though and helped a lot.
Don't beat yourself up OP, what you did is a drop in the ocean and the fact you feel the way you do is quite a testament to your obvious good nature.

Why?

They were really rude all the time. I worked in a demanding job and they were partying all night and they used to have bbqs next to my washing. I tried being polite to them but they kept just saying fuck off everytime I asked. So I thought I’d use a language they understood.

I killed a bird with my car. Not any bird but a fairly unusual bird and really beautiful too. It was a total accident but I’m still upset over it. I haven’t told anyone not even Dh.

Oh I feel for you. While travelling on a fast single carriageway a wood pigeon basically flew across my path at just the right height to hit my windscreen. I was very shocked and in my rear view mirror saw him dazed and floundering in the middle of the road. I immediately stopped in a layby and got out to retrieve him, just in time to see a lorry thunder towards him. He was totally flattened by it.

I felt terrible guilt as I had basically caused his death. He went from stunned to very, very dead in less than a second. Terrible to witness!

SilverVixen101 · 22/04/2026 18:26

I broke the heart of someone who was in love with me. Managed to break my own too at the same time. Three decades later we were in irregular email contact and I sent him a profuse and heartfelt apology. He accepted and we’ve maintained a warm irregular email contact ever since. He even made excuses for my behaviour! We both have very happy family lives with long term partners. It haunted me for years though.

Temporary speed camera van sometimes sits on my way home: As I come off a dual carriageway in the right hand lane (left goes to an often backed up left turn, traffic lights etc.), I can see through the trees whether or not it is there. One day, I saw it and slowed to the required 30mph. A woman in a white Fiesta came barelling up behind me like a bat out of hell, and was so close to my back bumper that I couldn't see much of her bonnet. Had I stayed where I was, she would have been OK, but I indicated and moved into the left hand lane and watched her go blazing past me ...and then slam her brakes on just that bit too late.....

Talkinrubbishagain · 22/04/2026 18:14

I’m not telling you! Gosh no.

Twinmum0822 · 22/04/2026 18:10

Had an affair with a married man. I justified it by saying I was single I could do what I wanted. I was young and dumb and just got out of an abusive relationship. To this day I’m waiting for my karma I feel awful all the time over it.

I behaved very badly to someone who loved me very much. He was heartbroken by what I did and I was dismissive of his feelings. If it comes into my head now I have to immediately think of something else, because it tortures me how heartless I was.

mambojambodothetango · 22/04/2026 18:05

I joined in and encouraged teasing a boy at school (we were 7ish) because he had bad excema. I really wish I could say sorry now.

Aprilgorgeousness · 22/04/2026 18:02

Slept with my boyfriend's brother.. one night with him, one with another.

At one point I slept with one at evening and later by midnight with another.
A pure madness. This was in 1996 BTW...I was young and stupid...

I have one of those as well😳

Vixxxs · 22/04/2026 17:52

i have done things in the past but I don’t feel ashamed or guilty. They were things that were necessary at that time, you definitely shouldn’t let one bad decision live rent free in your mind! One bad decision doesn’t make you a bad person
