So our Prime Minister is doing what he does best - blaming someone else for his own mistakes. But i really think he's done for this time - if he didn't know he's incompetent, if he did know he's lying to Parliament and the whole country. Either way i don't see how he can expect to keep his job. It's frightening how little he cared for Mandelson 's cosying up to a sex abuser, paedophile and human trafficker.

Because there is LITERALLY no way he was not told.

And how do you LITERALLY know that? Were you there to hear the conversation?

I think he's doing a good job under difficult circumstances. Boris Johnson failed his vetting before becoming foreign minister and none of the papers gave a shit. It seems that the media are increasingly biased towards the right wing .

One of the main reasons why noone gave a shit is because it's completely untrue that he failed the vetting process - you've just made that up!

What's emerged recently is that Theresa May had concerns about him - but they were proven to be wrong because ... he passed the vetting process.

We've had four prime ministers in 5 years - it's the most rapid turnover of leadership in nearly a century and one of the most volatile periods in British political history. Why are we in such a flap to make it 5 in 5?

I'm no fan of Starmer and didn't vote for him - but is the Mandelson thing affecting his ability to do the day-to-day duties of his job?

Looking for a political leader who has impeccable morals and never tells lies is like chasing rainbows.

Can we have some bloody stability, just for a little while?!

Totally agree, I think we've got really knee jerk as a nation in terms of "GET RID!" because of recent tumultuous times. I didn't vote for him either and he wouldn't be my choice, but being misinformed isn't the same as intentionally breaking the law or crashing the economy is it?

I guess a bit easy for me to say as I'm in Wales and a sea change is coming and if it's a turquoise sea I need to either look into emigration options or stand myself!

So you think he is bare-faced lying to Parliament and the public. I think that’s a stretch.

I 100% believe he is barefaced lying to the Parliament.

I absolutely to my very core believe that.

Carouseloflife · 20/04/2026 16:36

I find it surprising that you’ve posted this op before you’ve listened to parliament and the statement and questions today. Personally I find it helpful to listen to all the information before commenting with certain conclusions.

YANBU.

At the end of the day he wanted to appoint Mandelson. He doesn’t understand politics properly and this business is further evidence of that. Throwing the Civil Service under a bus is feckless. The “Mandelson files” released already show Starmer was sent a briefing report 9 days before Mandelson’s appointment, which flagged many things about Mandelson. Starmer can’t get away from that. What’s in the public domain about Simon Case advising Starmer to get the vetting done before the appointment is also something Starmer can’t get away from.

It’s all very well trying to say it was usual process for the vetting to be completed after a person’s appointment was confirmed but they were dealing with someone who had been twice disgraced as a Cabinet Minister, cavorted with Russian oligarchs aboard their yachts and even had sleaze allegations over things like freebie holidays while he was a European Commissioner. It seems Starmer either didn’t give a feck or didn’t appreciate the risk Mandelson’s appointment would end in tears, which seemed likelier than not based on Mandelson’s well-documented history.

I think the fact Jonathan Powell has come out and said the process seemed, “weirdly rushed,” is telling. What was the rush? That doesn’t seem to have been addressed. There was no need for Karen Pierce to have been replaced so soon.

He’s running out of people to sack. I doubt he can turn public opinion around and the problem for Labour MPs is the clock is ticking. The less time Starmer’s successor has to try and get people back on side, it’ll become a Herculean task.

HRTQueen · 20/04/2026 15:23

No he should not go

While the choice of Mandelson was questionable he was not informed of all the information

He is PM, it is not his role to oversee that people pass a vetting process that is for others to do and report back

What do you expect Starmer to be doing exactly, reading over CV's and references

Exactly this.

Some people seem addicted to the Tory introduced psychodrama and seemingly constant change of leadership we experienced for a while when they were in power.

As for another General Election, give over! It's the last thing the country needs.

Nonsense. I’m not particularly a Starmer fan but I don’t see how him not being told something makes him incompetent.

Because there is LITERALLY no way he was not told.

Its ridiculous to keep switching prime ministers - people baying for this do not have the best interests of the country at heart. We need stability. We need to come across internationally as a serious, level headed country.
Having said which, this Mandelson business is bizarre, it makes no sense to me why Keir Starmer or the Foreign Office would lie about him passing the security clearance. We need to get to the bottom of it.
I hope after a thorough investigation Keir Starmer is exonerated because we cannot keep upsetting the apple cart and churning through PMs. At the very least Keir should not be replaced until we find out what’s really happened. Mandelson should not be allowed to derail everything else.

Starmer isn't providing stability. He's endlessly lurching from one crisis to he next because of his lack of leadership. He's lost control of his government and the confidence of the British people.

Treadcarefully11 · 20/04/2026 16:33

The man is a charlatan. I’m embarrassed to have him as UK PM. He and his party are an unmitigated disaster and we are all paying the price.

I can imagine the buyers regret from those who voted Labour despite being told how it would play out is significant albeit they won’t want to admit just how wrong they were.

It is more concerning that the Prime Minister appointed Peter Mandelson before the vetting was complete, even though he was specifically warned not to do so. Then pretended not to hear any of the subsequent reports that he'd failed the vetting. Why was Starmer in such a rush to install a man with such a dodgy reputation?

A female MP in Parliament just said it was leaked to the press, so the government had no choice but to announce it.

This.

Things are so volatile right now globally. Why would we want to encourage our PM to resign, and then have to wait for however long it will take for Labour to elect a new leader.

Being a rudderless ship at the moment would be a really bad move.

We need stability. Not another leadership contest.

They made their choice less than two years ago. There is no reason to have a GE at the moment. It is in no-one's interests, except possibly Nigel Farage's.

It's not for you to say whether it's in the best interests of other people.

3GoldenLamps · 20/04/2026 16:30

This is making me sick. PM didn't know. had no idea. It was someone else. No, it was also someone other than someone else. It wasn't his fault. He had no idea.

When Mandelson was appointed everyone who knew anything wondered what the actual fuck and what he had on others. It was embarrassing and i know that DH and I (me, a former Labour voter) Said this was a MAJOT error and it would turn aorund to bite KS in the arse. It was also an indication of how rotten things were at the heart of the Labour party who pretended yo be be whiter than white.

Now KS is twisting and turning like it's his last gasp on the gallows.

He is a disgrace. I/m ashamed to have voted for him.

It is very concerning that the vetting process/outcome was not shared to Prime Minister when it failed

It’s actually this that is the more concerning matter for his position as prime minister. Were they trying to stitch him up? Did they think he would make a bad decision? It makes you wonder what they think of him and other ministers.

Dragonscaledaisy · 20/04/2026 16:26

You're kidding right?? Why on earth would they call an early GE when the tories didn't and were waaaaaaaay messier...

Classic "what aboutery" there @bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox .
Starmer and all Labour vowed they would do better than the Tories.
So far, they have not.
His resignation will show that they do have integrity and that they are different and better.

And we've heard a million times how Starmer's such a man of integrity.

letsallchant · 20/04/2026 16:00

Tell me you don't understand how the UK parliamentary system works without telling me..

The PM can call an early election.

it’s a bit of nuclear option to threaten the backbenchers with, but it’s still an option.

Dragonscaledaisy · 20/04/2026 16:24

TemperanceWest · 20/04/2026 16:22

The likely outcome of a GE right now would be a hung Parliament. So more instability.

Let's give the British public the choice.

There are processes for everything and the top person does not ask if every part is ok every day.

Exactly. You don’t go around asking everybody if they’ve done their job. You expect them to get on with it and tell you if there’s a problem.
