To remember when you didn’t have to pay separately for toner?! 💁🏼‍♀️

It’s been a few years since I had highlights but I’m thinking of getting them put in again.

I was very surprised to see on the booking website that I needed to ‘add toner service below as this is an essential part of the colour’ - for £30!

What?! I never used to pay for toner, it was part and parcel of getting the colour. Apparently now it’s the norm to pay for it!

Do you also have to pay separately for the foil squares?! 😅

Oh they charge alright. And it’s on an App.

Im just waiting for them to find a way to use AI for £25.

They already are: the Kerastase test where they do one small section of your scalp for free - but charge to do a full head. And then say you need an expensive serum for your scalp microbiome!

Surely I just wash it away when I wash my hair? How can there be a biome on my head?

igelkott2026 · 01/05/2026 14:28

I paid £79 for a cut and finish. The app will only let me book a cut and finish so I said to the hairdresser that I only wanted a rough dry, which she did, but charged me for the cut and finish anyway! Why should I have to call or call in, to be able to book a cut and rough dry?

And you can't cancel an appointment online, you have to call in. Even though you can make an appointment online.

And their latest wheeze is charging a 25% deposit for colour appointments. I bet if they cancel it on the day they won't give me 25% of the appointment cost. I will have to go somewhere else for my colour in future.

The odd thing is that half head highlights are only about £10 more than a cut these days!

Codyrhodesisaheel · 01/05/2026 14:26

My old hairdressers changed all their prices because people were eeking out their appointments for as long as possible (because they were so expensive)

They now have 1 price for chin length, one for shoulder, one for below shoulder (so if you fancy growing your hair you get penalised - it doesn't make a differece whether your hair is thick or thin)

They then have one colour price if it's been 6-8 weeks since your last colour, a higher price for 8-10 weeks, and if it's over 10 weeks, they charge you for a full 'start again' colour price. So if you happened to be away when you're usual treatment is, or you can't get an appointment with them that week, then tough!

They seem surprised that they are now always empty and offering same-day appointments, when historically all of their branches were booked months in advance.

And yes, they charge extra for toner, and also conditioner - even for their own in-house one, they'll charge you extra, let alone the £25 for olaplex!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 01/05/2026 14:24

The bill isn't broken down at my hairdressers, I pay £120 for cut, colour (highlights and root colour with some pulled through) and blow dry...this includes toner. Probably one of the cheapest in the area still

Skin test £15.

What? You pay for the skin test??? I go to quite a nice hairdressers in a decent part of London and never been charged for that.

I use purple shampoo - do I need toner? Could save myself £15!

Probably not. I see someone mentions it above but I absolutely wouldn’t risk it and I know I need a toner and would assume most people also do. It’s a totally different colour (orange) before the toner is added. Purple shampoo just takes out the warm tones.

My hairdresser wants to charge me £30 for a “gloss” to tone out the warmth in my brown hair.

Aye okay love, or I can buy a bottle of the same stuff from boots for £8.99 and do it as I please!

Oh, what do you buy please?

MaybeToxic · 01/05/2026 14:18

I empathise! It's sooo expensive.

I skipped toner last time and preferred it tbh!

MightyGoldBear · 01/05/2026 14:11

This is why I've let my silvers come through and only go to my hair dresser every couple of months. I'm slowly getting it down cheaper and cheaper I just can't afford it all. I tone myself at home do my own fun colours on the ends of my hair I'm just really going for the haircut of which I've gone shoulder length to eek that out too.

I appreciate costs have gone up for everything. I love my hairdresser she deserves every penny she does hair beautifully. I just can't afford it anymore. It used to be my one thing as a treat to myself but life's getting soioo expensive. I'm not sure what else next I can cut back on 😬

HelloItsMeYourRobotVaccuum · 01/05/2026 14:01

Costs have gone up for everyone but the prices are too high now. Pay for the highlights, pay for the toner, pay for a conditioner they slyly upsell, pay for a blow dry. I once ended up paying a total of £132 for a half head of highlights just to have my roots touched up and thought never again.

GingerBeverage · 01/05/2026 13:57

LooIoo · 20/04/2026 17:07

Whaaaaat!!

I just checked and toner has gone up to £60.

What do you mean by tone it out please? I'm thinking of trying that glazed stuff. I would do it at home.

Yeah, they charge for toner now

I don't get it because they basically tell you that you have to have it. I have never had anyone say to me or you can do without that. They tell you it's essential so I don't know why they don't just include it in the price.

not seen anyone charging for skin test which doesn't sound legal

Also, no one round here charges for a rough dry

RS1987 · 20/04/2026 18:39

I pay it, and they ask as though it’s optional, but I honestly don’t know what it is or what it does

GingerBeverage · 20/04/2026 18:37

LittlestBoho · 20/04/2026 17:12

Surely they can't charge you for the skin test - it's their legal obligation!

HumberBridge2 · 20/04/2026 17:17

£15 for a skin test 😱

I did get charged extra for a toner once about 10 years ago- I did not go back. She did an awful job and it looked so awful, I should have complained. I agree it should be included in the price!!

HoppityBun · 20/04/2026 17:17

I remember when you were asked if you wanted conditioner and if you said yes, you got a squirt and were charged extra. Seems the wheel is coming full circle. Oh yes! and you were asked if you wanted a cup of coffee and charged for that, too.

AmazingGreatAunt · 20/04/2026 08:33

I always thought my regular hairdresser was quite expensive as I have been paying the same prices for about 10 years. Cut and blow dry €50, cut, highlights and blow dry €100.
Then I had my hair cut in a slightly different location, as that was where I was at the time. Came to €75 with shampoo charged extra, just a not very good cut and a not very good blow dry.
Mind you, I always wondered about tax evasion/money laundering with my regular hairdresser as he only takes cash now, but I have known him for well over 30 years, so clearly not a fly-by-night operation!

earshadow · 20/04/2026 08:13

I do a purple shampoo at home after to save on the additional toner cost !

LooIoo · 20/04/2026 07:48

Doubledutchbus · 20/04/2026 07:05

My bugbear is that if I have mine cut at the same time as the colour, the full ‘cut and finish’ amount is added to the bill - it’s getting washed and dried anyway as part of the colour so I feel like the cut should be reduced.

This is a very good point!

I can remember when the salon I used to go to would charge an extra 50p for conditioner back when it was fancy and not something I thought was an essential. I even get a free coffee now, which is very swish.
