I do translating/admin e.g appointments, filling out forms. Work stuff on the side

My mums friend heard i do this and hired me. We agreed on sum etc

I did 3.5 hours work

She then tells me she will give the money when she sees my mum the next day, i agree

My mother then goes "omg guess how much she paid you!!!" "I said no, no, no, no! You are a friend!!!! Absolutely no need to pay that much!!! Wtf!!! 10 pound is fine!!! But she insisted she pays you the agreed amount!!!!! Said treat it as a gift then. But then i insisted and said 10 pound is fine!!!! Trust me!

Explaining to her is useless she just keeps going She is a friend!!! You cant charge her like other people!!!/anyone else!! How can you be so money hungry and greedy!!!

Am i right to be angry about this! I mean this woman is not my friend, i barely know her. And it was like 4 hours work!!!

Edit: oh and now im getting texts from this woman saying she was very happy with such a good price, what a nice person i am and how others she hired "take advantage and over charge". And she wants to hire me again for same price!

I love how she isn’t tech savvy enough to pay you online, but knows how to block you. What a CF!

Yes, I see what you mean. I think for me it's the principle of it though.

Fair enough.

mathanxiety · 22/04/2026 02:03

Saw your update - she's a CF, and small claims court is the way to go.

mathanxiety · 22/04/2026 02:00

Show your mum this thread. She needs to see how wrong she is.

Her friend is probably very embarrassed.

MrsJeanLuc · 21/04/2026 23:59

MyOtherProfile · 21/04/2026 23:33

Not really. It's wrong whatever but it would have an impact for me on whether I decided to take it further, like to the small claims court linked above.

Your mother is very generous with her children's time and resources, isn't she?

Send her a notice before action for the small claims court. She'll lose in court so will likely pay up before it gets that far

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 21/04/2026 23:35

For those saying take her to the small claims court, would OP have to have the original price in writing eg a text?

And OP, turn anyone down from now on who is associated with your mother, or make them pay upfront. And ignore your mum. Anything she needs? Just say no.

MyOtherProfile · 21/04/2026 23:33

MrsJeanLuc · 21/04/2026 23:19

That's irrelevant. She agreed a price, the work was done, she has to pay.

Hmm so she paid £10. Sorry if I missed it but do we know how much she should have paid?

Then you have to threaten court action. By post.

Let her know you are serious.

SeriouslyStressed · 21/04/2026 22:54

Are you sure your mum didn’t take the money and lie to her friend and you?

Bigcat25 · 21/04/2026 22:28

Sorry op, what a pain in the ass. A stingy rich person not paying what she agreed to, I'd totally take her to court but that's just me. How cowardly of her to block you.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 21/04/2026 22:20

Vile behaviour.

Omg that’s ridiculous and so cheeky. I would definitely send an invoice through the post. I wouldn't let this go, she owes you money. Even makes you wonder if she went through your mum with the payment on purpose as she knew your mum would insist she pay less.

In which case I would politely message again.

"hello, not sure if you saw my previous message. Please could you pay the remaining balance of £XX as soon as possible? My bank details are XXXXXXX, or cash is also fine. Please make sure the balance is paid by 28th April 2026. Thank you"

You need to go round there @Imacelebritygotit

Sheldonsheher · 21/04/2026 22:00

Tbh I don’t think you should threaten court action to a pensioner who your mum told not to pay. Tbh you’re not going to take her to court for 60£ or whatever so that is a bit ott. Reading some of these comments I genuinely think I exist in a parallel universe to people calling someone’s mother a CF for this. We don’t know what the mother does to help the OP child care help etc. this is not a hill I would die on.

MrsJeanLuc · 21/04/2026 21:54

Imacelebritygotit · 21/04/2026 19:39

Nope

@Imacelebritygotit you need to send her a formal invoice.
Agreed price £x
Paid £10
Outstanding £x-10
Please pay within 7 days (or insert date here) to avoid court action.

Tbh your mother's intervention is irrelevant. You had an agreement with this lady, and she owes you money. Deal with it like you would any other business interaction.

Ok if you say so. Of course I meant to do with her mum why would she not do work for anyone again.

Glad you agree!
