To want the Government to do more about the Cost of Living crisis?

I just cannot see what the Government is doing to support the insane rise in CoL. Our income is higher than it has ever beautiful we just scrape by every month. It's so depressing. Don't qualify for any benefits. So tired of it. I have written to my MP. I can't understand why they don't increase the lowest tax threshold as that would at least help everyone at the lower end. I don't see any improvement ahead.

A competent chancellor could solve this.

We had well over a decade of shit ones, so it is going to take a while. These things take time. There is no magic wand. Nor a magic money tree.

matresense · 18/04/2026 21:54

@SomedayIllBeSaturdayNightmy cousin is autistic, but honestly could have worked. There is absolutely no basis for letting her off due to anxiety. She gets very decent benefits and has for years.

They need to take some personal responsibility. Need something? They should ask friends or family. Don’t go and buy it. Is life just rent, utilities and food? If not, cut back.

My parents lived in a tent for 18 months when they first started out in professional jobs because they couldn’t afford anything else. People would be aghast at that these days but that’s personal responsibility.

Good things should come to those who work for them.

Living in a tent is ridiculous, and to say they took responsibility to do that is absurd. I do not think that is something to aspire to if you are on the bones of your arse.
But if you want to go back in time in terms of the help people get, then knock yourself out. I would rather not live in a tent and risk being pissed on, or raped... the sort of risks homeless women face.. to be a martyr and not claim money from a system that is set up to try and prevent people living in tents to start with.

We should start by mean testing ALL disability benefits and scrapping free prescriptions for pensioners (make it for 80+ year olds). Abolish the triple lock as a precursor to means testing the state pension in say 40 years.

The triple lock already doesn't exist for overseas pensioners in Commonwealth countries, though it does for lots of other countries.

Is any middle earner in poverty? Or are they just wanting to hold on to their lifestyle?
People at the very bottom... the low paid and those on benefits... they can not make cut backs to cope. They have nothing to cut back on.
Yet you think they should be the ones to lose money?

And people who aren't in decent incomes don't get unless they have kids/ disability etc.

Id not be eligible on 16k incone

That is something that does not get mentioned enough on here really. If you are a single childless person with no disabilty, you get no top ups. You just get told to earn more.

God almighty read what you just wrote.

given a 3 day working week and benefits for the rest weee you? No questions asked? Questions never were asked about benefits until mid 1980s at least, let alone sanctions.

I don't even know what you mean! People lost two fifths of their wage because of an energy shortage and were given basic dole money as compensation. Not given a handout on top of their wages as the OP is asking for.

If you’re a middle earner, why should you be taxed so much you’re ‘plunged into poverty’? How does that create the incentive to train and earn a middle income?

There is no more juice to be squeezed out of tax payers. The welfare bill has to be cut. Everything else that could be cut has been.

Precisely

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 18/04/2026 21:43

@XenoBitchis there not a point where people have to take some responsibility for their life choices?

Im a single parent of two small kids on a good enough wage. Not six figures. I work long hours to provide them with a good life. I already pay a shed load of tax and (rightly) don't qualify for any state support. But honestly, I'm reaching the "fuck it" stage where much more tax and I'll find a way to move money around or emigrate.

Pickledonion1999 · 18/04/2026 16:38

You don't need to be on a very low income to get UC. We read all the time on here of people on decent incomes still qualifying for it.

Do you actually know this or are you guessing?
I work with many small businesses in a certain industry. The vast majority of them want to pay their staff as much as possible but are being held back by the burden of government policy. National minimum wage is so high it is forcing the bands above them to be moved up anrtificially, increasing the payroll of employers. Part time staff are now incurring employers national insurance too. All that money could have been invested into the staff and the business to meet their growing demand but any increases in profitability are being taken by the state.

I work in this field yes so I know all about it.

There will be help coming - means tested so it will be for those already in receipt of benefits. The rest of us who are just managing to keep our heads above water but who can't take much more will have to fend for ourselves - as usual.

Came to say exactly this.

CarrotSpa · 18/04/2026 21:35

IDontHateRainbows · 18/04/2026 20:14

Most businesses don't pass on wage rises to staff unless by staff you mean those at the very top of the tree who always find money for a bonus!

The government gives a huge amount of money from middle rate taxpayers to people who don't or barely work.

We can't take much more squeezing.

Pensioners on 1k a month have the broadest shoulders? How much should they give back then? 100, 200, 300?

It is because people on here tend to bash individuals on benefits, and not the system. I speak from bitter experience.

Agree. It normally deteriorates into personal attacks.

Why can't people discuss the ridiculous rise in benefits without the 'benefit bashing' line constantly being wheeled out? The welfare bill is costing us billions a year and rising at an alarming rate but no one mention it because you are 'bashing' folk. No wonder we are in the bloody mess we are.

Cantgetausername87 · 18/04/2026 17:54

I love a good benefit bashing thread. A lot of people claiming UC do work and do pay their taxes.
Can anyone see how the COL crisis has further divided the country? Lots of things have impacted this, COVID, Brexit and then Trump starting a war one day because he wanted to!
I do believe there's more the government could do to increase productivity and help ease taxation on lower and middle incomes. But I'm more concerned about the impact the scapegoating has on us as a society and people turning to places like reform for the answer. Don't have to look too far back in history to where we've heard this one before...

I would like them to scrap the triple lock & use that saving for investment but no government will have the guts to do it.

Just how much do you think the triple lock is worth? Is there an acceptable increase you deem okay.

As if unemployment benefit wasn't the government bailing them out!
