Only knickers in the Co-op

A teenage girl (aged 15 or 16, roughly) in front of me in the Co-op was wearing a crop-top and a pair of knickers only. Not bikini bottoms, not short shorts but cotton M & S midi style knickers. I didn’t say anything (none of my business and she probably wouldn’t have approved my sartorial choices either). If I had been her mother, seeing her before she left the house, I would have said that it looked unhygienic and wasn’t an appropriate way to go to the shops.
YABU: People of whatever age can dress how they like when they go to the Co-op.
YANBU: A mini-skirt or pair of shorts are a minimum requirement when you’re off to the shops.

It really is easy not to look.

I’m a very conservative dresser and have no issue looking elsewhere. Not sure why men centre themselves here, it just confirms that they think womens’ and girls’ bodies are primarily meant for them.

It’s not when it’s everywhere, walking to the theatre in Liverpool the other weekend, ‘oh my eyes!’

garlictwist · 13/04/2026 08:48

It was 8 degrees where I am yesterday. Not knicker-only weather. Are you sure it wasn't some kind of hotpant?

Tell me you've never had a Friday night out in the Bigg Market in Newcastle without telling me you've never had a Friday night out in the Bigg Market in Newcastle...

Exactly!

I saw a girl today walking through a shopping centre. Her skirt was halfway up her buttocks. You could see her actual bum cheeks and I won’t go into detail but I do not believe the girl was aware of what she was exposing. I think people look down and see their clothes but don’t see it from the angle they will be seen in.
I felt bad for her and for some reason I didn’t tell her because I was wary of being seen as shaming her. But hopefully she will be told by a friend.

I've had the same thing several times, very nearly told her her arse was hanging out because from the front looking in the mirror she genuinely wouldn't see. But figured I wouldn't be thanked for pointing it out.

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere in the replies but I am confused. Was it just that she couldn't be arsed putting on clothes on her bottom half (similar to the people I see in pyjamas at Tesco or on the school run), or was she doing it out of some misguided attempt to look sexy? Either way it's grim but for different reasons.

I didn’t know people still wore pjs to Tescos. Not in my big one, but maybe I’m blind!

Where was this? It was 13C maximum with a cold wind where I live in the UK yesterday. Supermarkets are freezing when it's warm out.

Sounds like another completely made up lot of bollocks by very odd and unpleasant misogynistic individuals to me. Reported.

I think it comes down to what’s appropriate for certain situations- a night out, on the beach etc, it’s fine. Popping to the local shop is inappropriate and attention seeking imo.
I’ve seen a couple of questionable outfits at my local Asda fairly recently. One lady( early 20s) was wearing a very revealing pair of hot pants, it was a chilly day so she stood out, and caught the attention of pretty much everyone. I felt embarrassed for her but she and her friend seemed nonchalant.

I don’t expect to have to avert my eyes from someone out in public, so why should men have to? Are they meant to just walk around staring at the ground? Sure men shouldn’t be leering at anyone but to expect them to be constantly on guard and look away when someone is inappropriately dressed is ridiculous.

I’m actually quite disturbed by the fact that young women have been brain washed into believing that it’s “empowering” to be practically naked. It’s not.

I didn’t say men should look away, I said anyone can look away.

I agree that women being sold the lie that being naked is empowering is hugely damaging but it really is easy for both men and women to look away.

So many women here describing in fetish like detail about women’s arse cheeks jiggling or whatever, it sounds like they enjoy it. Just look away, look at your phone.

My first thought is she has her phone out to post all the "unwanted" attention without actually revealing what she's wearing to her followers.
Click bait.
It's definitely a TikTok trend.
I see it all the time.

At the Co-op near us, people frequently go in in their nightwear. This takes that trend to a new (low) level.

Never seen this in our local co op! Nor in the local sainsbos. Mind you, it’s a “village” in SE London.

I’ve seen women in my local city shopping centre wearing flesh coloured crop tops and shorts, like underwear. One girl I seriously thought she was naked. She wasn’t. Time and a place people. Time and place.

Snort!

They all wear cycling shorts underneath. Thats why

I live near a secondary school. None of the girls wear cycling shorts under their extremely short stretchy black skirts. They don't all wear black tights either.
I felt embarrassed for a girl who was stepping up into the bus as I passed recently. I'm sure she didn't realise how much she was showing.

Wordsmithery · 13/04/2026 08:13

I'd worry about her mental health too. It's one thing wearing skimpy clothes as a fashion choice. But shopping in your actual underwear is pretty bizarre.

Bluddyellfire · 13/04/2026 08:12

I remember not long after upskirting was (quite rightly) outlawed, walking to the train station one afternoon behind a young woman in a skirt so short that the cheeks of her bare arse were jingling in the breeze VERY visibly indeed. I don't what they think they look like 🤷🏻‍♀️

MsGreying · 13/04/2026 08:12

@tarheelbaby
Wow.
The emporer's new pants!

I think the point was well made upthread that while these girls know that men will be looking at them (regardless of whether that’s their intention or not), they don’t stop to consider the type of man who will be looking. Younger and younger girls are dressing this way. We live opposite a secondary school and it’s noticeable that at the morning school run the girls are arriving in mostly statutory school uniform, but at home time skirts are rolled up to the buttocks, ties are off in favour of buttons being undone to reveal coloured bras and in some cases the uniform is unrecognisable as such. It’s an absolute paedophile’s dream.

Why do you assume they dress for men and not their friends? Which secondary girls are hanging out with men?

There's a time and a place for revealing clothing. Night club/beach/party - OK, supermarket, not the place. 'Wear what you want' has its limits; would people think it OK to be naked in the supermarket?

What about a 60 year old man walking round the Co-op in just his Y-fronts? People on here would be saying he was a pervert, 'involving others in his fetish' etc.

Neemon · 13/04/2026 08:03

Not much worse than the awful shorts that are so skin tight they go right up their bum crack. Why do I need to see a perfect outline of your arse? Put it away, you just look like a twat.

I am always so fascinated by the body positivity of today's "processed food" raised youngsters, some of who are significantly larger than people I knew in my youth.

I mean that’s the whole point… to be confident in your body even if you’re not a waif like their mums and grandmothers want them to be. Being fat isn’t the worst thing someone can be do try to remember that.

nomas · 13/04/2026 07:59

NotAnotherScarf · 12/04/2026 18:18

Yep. See this regularly where I live on warm days. As a 57 year old man I feel uncomfortable (been told on mn "don't look then" in the past). But if you're walking behind someone..

I was out with a group of friends from school on Friday night and the women all commented on the amount of boob on display by some of the youngsters in the pub

People can dress how they want but I just think it does impact others...

It really is easy not to look.

Sounds similar to clothing worn on a night out!
